1 International Conference for Island and Coastal Museums Haugesund, Norway October 2008 ISLAND AND COASTAL HERITAGE - A VITAL PART OF EUROPEAN IDENTITY Looking at climate change challenges, social sustainability, island/coastal museums network and the European dimension The conference is under the auspices of the European Museum Forum,and is organized by Rogaland County Council in conjunctionwith Haugalandsmuseene (the regional museums organization), The Norwegian Network of Coastal museums, and Karmøy Municipality/Nordvegen History Centre Photo: Kjell Strand

2 BACKGROUND The European Museums Forum has established an annual series of workshops and seminars which explore innovative new themes of professional activity in European museums. A theme which has gathered great momentum over the last two years has been the particular strengths, difficulties and achievements experienced by museums operating on Islands or in coastal areas. Two EMF seminars on this subject have already been held, in Portugal and in Greece. The workshops so far have provided a number of case studies and models of best practice which provide the tools for creating sound strategies for the promotion of heritage identity in defined communities. The third seminar will be held in the County of Rogaland, Norway, which this year is a European Capital of Culture, unifying the capital city, Stavanger, with the other major town, Sandnes, and the entire county into a partnership called Stavanger2008. The Monday excursion will look at a concrete Stavanger2008 project, based on the rich Bronze Age heritage of the Stavanger area.

3 THE VENUES The setting for the workshop-conference is stunning, overlooking the Nordveg (the north-way) channel along the western coast of Norway which gave the country its name. The workshop will be based at the new Millennium heritage development at Avaldsness in the south west of the County, with an opportunity to visit Stavanger and to meet the people involved in the City of Culture activities of the capital. Stavanger's position as City of Culture for 2008 provides a perfect reason to extend the next, and potentially critical phase of this EMF initiative for international cooperation towards a permanent professional network for the future. The welcome program and National network meeting will be held at the Museums Centre, Haugesund. FOUR THEMES The conference is divided into 4 themes: 1. Coastal Heritage - a vital part of European identity and a resource under threat from climate change 2. The Interactional between local Communities and their museums - an outside view 3. Networking and co-operation between coastal and island museums 4. The European Dimension - Raising the Viability of Maritime Europe - linking into current EU policies and the European Maritime Days

4 INTERACTIVE CONFERENCE The meeting will be interactive with participants learning from each other as much as from the invited speakers. Formal lectures are a minor part of the programme, and collaborative team discussions and feedback will be a major part of the programme. Each of the main themes of the workshop will introduced by a keynote speaker, followed by detailed consideration in groups, and a final full session reporting back from the group work. We will discuss and examine issues such as: - the benefits of co-operation and strategic methods for island and coastal museums - the social responsibility of island and coastal museums towards their various communities - the role of such museums in relation to the tourist industry - the viability and desirability of establishing network for the exchange of ideas, culture and best professional practice. We think this workshop will be stimulating and will provide some excellent evidence on which community strategies for museums anywhere can be influenced. 7 Ryvarden PRACTICAL INFORMATION: Participants are recommended to fly into Stavanger airport, as the final day will end there. Pick-up transport will be organised on the opening day from Stavanger to Haugesund (or if you arrive at odd times, advise will be given on how to get to Haugesund from Stavanger). Participants fee: There will be a fee of NOK 500 per night, so if you arrive on the 10th and leave on the 13th, your fee will be NOK1500. We can arrange additional nights accommodation, but then the full hotel fares will apply (please contact us for quotes, but extra nights will cost approx. NOK 900 per night in single rooms, breakfast included). The fee includes all meals, transport between hotel and venues, and accommodation in single rooms at Rica Maritim Hotel in Haugesund.
