1 European Weed Research Society 1 st CIRCULAR 10 TH WORKSHOP OF THE EWRS WORKING GROUP: PHYSICAL AND CULTURAL WEED CONTROL Alnarp, Sweden March 2014 Dear Colleague, We are pleased to give you some general information on the 10 th workshop of our working group. Please forward this circular to any interested colleagues in your institution/country. Information on the workshop will also appear on the working group s web site: The aim of the workshop is to create a forum where people involved in research in physical and cultural weed control can come together and exchange results, experiences, information, and establish new contacts and networks. 2 Venue The Workshop will take place at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SUAS), campus in Alnarp, about 10 km north of Malmö (southern Sweden). The campus area is situated in a park surrounded by arable fields, but in a densely populated area. Education and research has been carried out at Alnarp for about 150 years. SUAS offers education in landscape architecture, horticulture and agriculture at BSc and MSc levels. Accommodations and meals Participants will arrange their own accommodations in the city of Malmö. There are several accommodations in the city with prices from about 45 Euro per night to 200 Euro per night (breakfast included). This is a hostel in an international tourist organization. Good, clean and quite new. Costs for participation The estimated cost of the registration will be approximately 435. We will try to find sponsors in order to reduce registration fee. Non-EWRS members will be charged an extra fee of 60, which is the yearly membership price for the EWRS. The registration fee will cover: Welcome drink and light meal on Sunday evening, lunches and morning and afternoon coffee during the workshop, dinners on Monday and Tuesday, transport from your hotel to the venue, meeting booklet, and the excursion on Tuesday. Payment will be made to JTI. Instructions for this will be provided in the 2 nd circular. Practical details Transport We recommend that you fly to the Copenhagen airport in Denmark. At Copenhagen airport there is a train connection to Malmö. Train runs often, 2-3 trains per hour and it takes about 30 minutes from the airport to Malmö Central Station. Note that there are stations before the Central Station that also are in the city of Malmö, but these are quite far away from the city centre. On arrival in Malmö, the local organisers will meet you and (if required) help you to your hotel. We recommend that you arrive no later than Sunday March 16 th. Weather and clothes In mid - March, the spring has started, but it can still be cold and rainy with temperatures around 5-10 C and sometimes even colder. Bring warm boots for outdoor use and warm clothes. Currency, visa, electricity All major credit cards are accepted in Sweden. Avoid the Electron card, that could be difficult, but Visa and Master Card are easy to use. We have 230 V electricity. Payment is in Swedish krona (SEK). You cannot use EURO banknotes to pay in shops etc. 3

4 Residents in countries outside the EU may need to apply for a visa to enter EU and Sweden. Remember that the airport is in Denmark and the workshop is in Sweden. Please contact your local authorities/embassies and check if you need a visa. We will send letter of invitation to you if needed. On March 19 th 2014, participants will obtain a document certifying that they have attended the workshop. Accompanying person If you wish to bring an accompanying person who will not participate in the scientific program, please advise the local organisers. Accompanying persons can easily take advantage of the tourist activities in both Malmö and Copenhagen. Oral presentations, theme to be decided Future activities and concluding remarks 16.00, end of the workshop Scientific programme The workshop aims to be informal and to stimulate as much discussion as possible among participants. We will combine plenary scientific sessions with oral and poster presentations, concurrent round-table discussions, and a final plenary session (reports on round-table discussions, directions for the future, etc.). Session chairs will briefly introduce each poster associated with the theme of their oral session presentations. We would also like to organise a keynote theme followed by an extensive discussion. You are most welcome to suggest relevant speakers and themes. Below is a tentative list of topics: Weed management in organic farming systems Integrated weed management (arable and vegetable crops, orchards, tree nurseries) Physical weed control in non-agricultural settings (urban areas, railroad tracks, etc.) Preventive and cultural weed control (crop rotation, tillage system, false seedbed technique, seeding rate, fertilisation, etc.) Cover crops, mulches and intercropping Mechanical weed control, inter- and intra-row (harrowing, hoeing, brushing, etc.) Thermal weed control (flame-weeding, steaming, soil solarization, lasers, etc.) Precision guidance, weeding robots etc. New developments and technical innovations in physical weed control Factors influencing the outcome of physical and cultural weed control Weed population dynamics in physical and cultural weed management systems Environmental impact of physical and cultural weed management Research methodology in physical and cultural weed management Exchange and transfer of information, and international cooperation (glossary, use of Internet resources, etc.) 5

6 Abstracts and Proceedings A booklet with one-page abstracts of all scientific contributions will be available at the workshop. The abstracts and optional full papers of all scientific contributions, both oral and poster papers, will appear in the Proceedings, which will be published on the working group s web site after the workshop. Pre-registration and call for papers Please complete the pre-registration form for which you will find the link before September 30 th 2013 (starting August 15 th ). At the same time, you must fill the form to indicate if you wish to make one or several presentations. For each presentation, you will have to provide an abstract (min max 500 words) which includes a clear definition of the objectives and of the methodology along with some results. You will also have to specify whether you prefer to give a poster or an oral presentation. Pre-registration and abstract submission(s) will be acknowledged. We are looking for colleagues to suggest keynote themes and possible speakers, to chair round table discussions and the workshop s sessions.
