International Law Study Tour

1 This tour is aimed at law students who would like to see their study topic turned into practice. It comprises educational visits to institutions and organizations with cultural sights and fun activities. A perfect combination of theory and practice while getting to know European capitals and their people. The idea is to select a specific topic before the departure of the group that will be discussed during a simulating session which will happen during the last three days of the tour. The session will be like the Model United Nations but organized by PDM and an academic institution in Vienna - an academic simulation is meant for addressing global concerns in a real world context. Examples for topics: Personal Identification - Use of Microchips, Nuclear Energy, etc.!! This programme is now very intensively focused on study visits and educational elements. The exact persons you will meet will be confirmed closer to the date. If you require a more leisure-balanced itinerary we would be happy to add elements such as bike tours, community dinners with locals, museum visits, outdoor activities etc.!! 2 ITINERARY Day 1 Amsterdam Saturday Highlights: Walking tour guided by local students! Arrival in Amsterdam Welcome by your tour manager and transfer from airport Afternoon Guided Walking tour in Amsterdam led by local students from Central Station, via museum square and the Redlight District to the student area the Pijp (excl. entrances) Overnight in Amsterdam Day 2 Amsterdam Sunday Highlights: Official welcome at the embassy in Amsterdam and discussion with a representative of an international law firm! Morning Visit the Brazilian Embassy in Amsterdam official welcome by the ambassador and question and answer session (tbc) Visit an international law firm in Amsterdam where one of the lawyers will welcome you, tell you about his projects and invite you for a question and answer session Rest of the afternoon at your free disposal Overnight in Amsterdam Day 3 Amsterdam Monday Highlights: Environmental Law - lecture and projects! Morning - Visit the University of Amsterdam s Faculty of Law and the Centre for Environmental Law and Sustainability, speak to an official of the division Late Morning - Attend lecture on environmental law and take case study together with local students (tbc) Afternoon at your free disposal (optional: guided tour Anne Frank museum) Overnight in Amsterdam Day 4 Den Haag / Brussels Tuesday Highlights: Full day trip to the political hub of Den Haag! Departure to Den Haag (60 km, ~1 hr) Morning - Visit and presentation of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Visit to the library of the ICJ by an official representative of the ICJ Afternoon Visit the UN Special Tribunal for Lebanon, speak to an officer on site and visit a hearing (tbc) Departure to Brussels (170km, ~2,5hrs) Overnight in Brussels Itinerary subject to availability 2

3 Day 5 Brussels Wednesday Highlights: Interactive visit to the European Parliament followed by beer tasting! Morning Interactive visit in the European Parliament, guided Tour and discussion with a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), attendance at a session or visit of a chamber (tbc) Afternoon - City tour Brussels with a local guide including beer tasting at a microbrewery (excl. entrances) Overnight in Brussels Day 6 Brussels / Strasbourg Thursday Highlights: Speak to members of a law association! Morning Visit the International Association of Young Lawyers or the Law Students Association (or similar). An official will talk about the organisation structure, its commissions and current projects. Afterwards you can enjoy a question and answer session (tbc) Afternoon Departure to Strasbourg. On the way visit a winery in the beautiful Alsace region and taste some local specialties Overnight in Strasbourg Day 7 Strasbourg Friday Highlights: European Institutions close-up and bowling with local students! Morning - Visit of the European Court of Human Rights. An official will present to you the role and work of the Court and attend a hearing (tbc) Afternoon Visit of the Council of Europe you will hear about the work of the members of parliament, diplomats and experts. See the entrance hall as well as the impressive Assembly Chamber, the democratic voice of Europe. Lecture on political role of the Council and a discussion with an official representative (tbc) Bowling Night together with students from a local university Overnight in Strasbourg Day 8 Strasbourg Saturday Highlights: Sharpen your team building skills during a treasure hunt! Morning City Tour Strasbourg - explore the most important sights of the city with a local guide (excl. entrances) Afternoon Geocaching in the region around Strasbourg go for a treasure hunt, explore Strasbourg s surroundings and enhance your team building skills Overnight in Strasbourg Itinerary subject to availability 3

4 Day 9 Strasbourg / Geneva Sunday Highlights: Slide down the snowy slopes in Switzerland! Morning Transfer to Geneva (400km, ~ 5hrs) Stopover in Lausanne for lunch and time to discover the beautiful town along the lake Sledging experience close to Lausanne (Alternative: Visit Cheese Factory) Fondue Dinner and Swiss traditional folklore show Overnight in Geneva Day 10 Geneva Monday Highlights: Learn more about the requirements for law graduates! Morning City orientation finishing in a visit to the Palace of Nations, the base of the United Nations Office in Geneva (tbc) Visit to the visitor centre of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees including a lecture by one of the organisation s officials such as the Refugee Law Advisor (tbc) Afternoon speak to an official of a large International Legal Recruitment Company about industry standards and requirements for job seekers in the International Law Field Overnight in Geneva Day 11 Geneva / Vienna Tuesday Highlights: Morning Visit the headquarters of the World Trade Organisation which deals with the global rules of trade between nations, During a study visit you hear about the tasks and challenges of the World Trade Organisation, including question and answer session Afterwards: Visit to the International Committee of Jurists (ICJ) to have a roundtable discussion with one of the officials. Participants agree on a specific topic to discuss and debate Afternoon - Visit the International Trade Centre (ITC), a joint agency of the World Trade Council and the United Nations. A representative will welcome you and introduce you to the organisation s work question and answer session Overnight train to Vienna (with one train change in Zurich) Day 12 Vienna Wednesday Highlights: Sightseeing day in Vienna! Morning Guided City Tour- Driving along the famous Ring road, you ll see the state opera house, the Schoenbrunn Palace and the parliament building. Walking through the inner city, entirely a UNESCO world heritage site, you ll pass the huge Hofburg palace, the famous Spanish riding school and stunning gothic St. Stephen s Cathedral. 5 Day 13 Vienna Thursday Highlights: Insight into education institutions and the UNCITRL! Morning Visit the Vienna International Centre, home to the United Nations and speak to an officer at the UNCITRL Visit the United Nations Commissions on International Trade Law (tbc) Afternoon Lecture at an educational institution (e.g. Faculty of Law Vienna) and kick off for the project of the upcoming days. Examples for Topics: Personal Identification - Use of Microchips, Nuclear Energy, etc. The project will be worked for the next two days together with local students in mixed groups with the assistance of an academic advisor Kick-off Event (e.g. apple strudel baking) Overnight in Vienna Day 14 Vienna Friday Highlights: Project Day I - UN Simulation and Service Project! Morning Project formation and start until 15.00, Project involves debates, discussions and team building exercises Late Afternoon / Evening Program participate in a social service project together with your team mates (e.g. Red Cross working day) Overnight in Vienna Day 15 Vienna Saturday Highlights: Project Day II UN Simulation! Morning Project until 15.00, Final Debates Afternoon Closing Event and Farewell Dinner at a traditional Heuriger, a typical Austrian wine-tavern, together with university students Overnight in Vienna Day 16 Departure Day Sunday Private transfer to airport Travel home or continue on extension tour Itinerary subject to availability 5
