3 Course Overview This qualification covers workers who provide support to assist with the effective functioning of health services. These workers do not provide direct care assistance functions such as assisting other staff with the care of clients. This is an entry level qualification. The HLT21212 Certificate II in Health Support Services consists of 12 competency units: 4 compulsory units and 8 elective units. On successful completion students will obtain a qualification with a focus on client support services. Students will be given insight into the health care services for future studies or to gain employment in the health industry. HLT21212 Certificate II in Health Support Services is being offered as a VET in Schools program throughout the Kimberley. Students who live outside of Broome access facilitators by using Blackboard Collaborate, a web based classroom. Applications The Broome Campus encourages applications from school students who have an interest in working in the health sector. The entry requirements consider suitability to the health and nursing professions. A preenrolment interview is conducted, this includes a pre-training literacy and numeracy assessment. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) You may be eligible for a reduced study plan in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Further information will be provided at interview or by contacting the Assistant Dean, Broome Campus. Credit Transfer You may be eligible for a reduced study plan in your chosen course if you have already completed unit/s with another Registered Training Organisation which are identified equivalent in content and learning outcomes to those being undertaken in your course. Qualification Upon successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to receive the nationally endorsed HLT21212 Certificate II in Health Support Services. Pathways If you wish to further your studies, you may continue in the Tertiary Pathways Program, Certificate III in Health Services Assistance, or the Diploma of Nursing at the Broome Campus. Career Opportunities Students completing this qualification will be able to work in the following roles: hospital assistant support services worker orderly ward assistant housekeeping assistant Nursing is an age old occupation and has long been associated with rituals to mark special events, as well as being closely associated with Christianity. As part of a Catholic university, the School of Nursing & Midwifery celebrates several occasions during the academic year, such as International Nurses Day on May 12, to acknowledge Florence Nightingale s birthday.

4 Attendance HLT21212 Certificate II in Health Support Services Course Guide VET in Schools Students enrolled in the Certificate II in Health Support Services are expected to attend all scheduled sessions as per their program planner/timetable. Any absence required from class should be discussed with the Course Coordinator or Assistant Dean, and your school. VET in School students have scheduled classes on a Monday or Tuesday throughout the school term. Assessments Students are required to obtain a Satisfactory result for all assessment tasks for each unit of competency to be deemed competent in each unit. Three (3) attempts will be permitted for each assessment task. All assessments have a due date. If the assessment is not submitted by the due date it will be considered the first attempt. If the student does not complete the requirements within the time allocated and in consultation with the course coordinator, the student may be withdrawn from the unit and may subsequently incur course completion implications. Assessment due dates will be provided at commencement of the course. Fees and Charges This training is delivered with Western Australian and Commonwealth Government funding to eligible students. There are no course or resource fee costs to VET in Schools students. Other Costs Immunisations are required, along with nursing uniform scrubs. Every learner who engages in vocational training will be taking on new LLN practices or, at the very least will be using skills in different ways. Trainers need to assist learners to adapt their skills to suit new environments, training and in the workplace. To be able to assist learners it is essential that individual LLN skill level is assessed to be able to provide the required support to extend these skills. All prospective students are required to complete an LLN assessment during the application process. This assessment is likely to take between 20 and 30 minutes. There is opportunity for students to take longer if required. There is no preparation required for this assessment and students will be advised of the outcome during the application and admission process. It is important to remember that this is not a test to be able exclude you from training options, it is used as tool to determine the level and type of support that may be required.

Units of Competency The HLT21212 Certificate II in Health Support Services consists of 12 competency units: 4 compulsory units and 8 elective units. On successful completion of all units of competency students will obtain a qualification in HLT21212 Certificate II in Health Support Services, with a focus on client support services. The student will be given insight into the health care services for future studies or to gain employment in the health industry. 6 Core Units HLTHIR301C Communicate and Work Effectively in Health knowledge required to work effectively in a health setting with clients, staff, visitors, suppliers and others to meet established work requirements. BSBWOR203B Work Effectively With Others This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work in a group environment promoting team commitment and cooperation, supporting team members and dealing effectively with issues, problems and conflict. HLTIN301C Comply With Infection Control Policies and Procedures in Health Work knowledge required for workers to comply with infection control policies and procedures. All procedures must be carried out in accordance with current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards for maintaining infection - control and the policies and procedures of the organisation. This unit acknowledges the importance of complying with an effective infection control strategy that ensures the safety of the client (or enduser of health-related products/services), maintains personal protection and prevents the transmission of infections from person to person. All tasks must be carried out in accordance with State or Territory legislative requirements that affect work practices of the organisation and/or worker. HLTWHS200A Participate in WHS Processes This unit specifies the workplace performance required for an entry level worker to participate in work health and safety (WHS) processes in the workplace in order to ensure their own health and safety at work as well as that of others in the workplace who may be affected by their actions. Elective Units BSBWOR204A Use Business Technology This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to select, use and maintain a range of business technology. This technology includes the effective use of computer software to organise information and data. HLTHSE204D Follow Safe Manual Handling Practices This unit is concerned with the workers ability to carry out their work in a safe manner within the health care environment. HLTMS203D Undertake Routine Stock Maintenance knowledge required to maintain predetermined stock levels of supplies, consumables, equipment and other store items at ward, unit, sub-store or departmental level. HLTCSD203D Prepare and Maintain Beds knowledge required to apply bed making and cleaning practices to a range of beds to ensure that clients can safely occupy a clean bed. HLTCSD208D Transport Clients This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for the safe, timely and efficient transport of clients from one location to another at a particular site, or to other sites. HLTCSD201D Maintain High Standard of Client Service This unit describes skills and knowledge for care assistance workers and other workers who have contact with clients required to deliver and maintain a high standard of service. HLTMS201D Collect and Manage Linen Stock at User-Location knowledge required to collect soiled linen from userlocations, deliver soiled linen to a designated holding area, distribute clean linen and maintain economic linen stock levels at user-locations. HLTCSD306C Respond Effectively to Behaviours of Concern knowledge required to respond effectively to difficult or challenging behaviour of clients and others. These skills are associated with handling difficult incidents rather than managing ongoing behaviour difficulties.
