3 Faculty/Accreditation Barbara Blackmond A senior partner in the law firm of Horty, Springer & Mattern, P.C., Barb works extensively on credentialing matters and in defense of antitrust lawsuits filed against hospitals and Medical Staff leaders. She has served on the faculty of the American Bar Association Forum on Health Law and programs sponsored by many state hospital associations, medical societies, and bar associations, and individual hospital board/medical Staff retreats and leadership programs. She is listed in The Best Lawyers in America. Susan Lapenta Susan is a partner in the law firm of Horty, Springer & Mattern. The firm represents institutional providers, such as hospitals, multihospital systems and health maintenance organizations, nationwide. Ms. Lapenta is a contributor to the HortySpringer publications. Ms. Lapenta has worked extensively with hospitals and their Medical Staffs on peer review investigations and hearings. She has also assisted Medical Staffs in the revision of bylaws and related projects. Additionally, Ms. Lapenta has served as counsel in litigation stemming from credentialing decisions, including the defense of antitrust claims. Ms. Lapenta has served on the faculty of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and currently serves on the faculty of the American Association for Physician Leadership. She is a member of the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and American Bar Associations. Francis R. Randy Reid, M.D., F.A.C.S. Francis R. Randy Reid is a board-certified ophthalmologist practicing in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He is the founding president of The Eye Center of Oak Ridge, a 14-physician eye care group. Dr. Reid is the past Chief of Staff at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, a member hospital of the Covenant Health System. He has served on the Board of Directors of Covenant Health and the Board of Methodist Medical Center. In 2004, he was honored for completing 10 years of service on the Medical Center s Credentials Committee. In 1993, Dr. Reid received the Tennessee Hospital Association Meritorious Service Medical Staff Award. This award is given to one Tennessee physician each year to recognize excellence in Medical Staff leadership. Presenter Disclosure Statement In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education requirements on disclosure, information about relationships of presenters with commercial interests (if any) will be included in materials, which will be distributed at the time of the conference. Participation by all individuals is encouraged. Advance notification of any special needs will help us provide better service. Please notify us at least two weeks in advance of the program. Educational Intent This program is designed for physicians who serve in Medical Staff leadership positions in hospitals. Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to identify common credentialing issues and develop best practices relating to initial appointment, reappointment, and clinical privileges. They should also be able to identify and manage the variety of peer review issues that confront them in their roles as physician leaders. Finally, participants should be able to define the legal responsibilities of Medical Staff leaders and the legal protections available to them. Continuing Education Credit This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and HortySpringer Seminars. The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Other healthcare professionals are awarded continuing education units (CEUs), which are equal to contact hours. NAMSS Accreditation This course has been approved for National Association of Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) continuing education credit.
