2 Welcome to 17 October 2011: the day for charity finance teams. Grand Connaught Rooms, Central London. Welcome to our single day of conferences for charity FDs and their teams. The day has been constructed to allow you and your colleagues to spend a day within each of your specialist areas. By offering three specialist conferences we allow delegates to really get under the skin of a topic. Only with this level of thoroughness do we think that you and your team will get what you really need to justify a day out of the office. Our hope is that you will attend with your colleagues, and so as a team you will check off everything we have to offer on the day. Three breaks during the day provide time for your team to regroup, be it to discuss what you have learnt earlier, or to talk shop. To that end we have attractive discounts for multiple bookings, which you can find on the back page of this programme. Of course, we equally welcome individual bookings, whichever conference you decide will be of most use to you at this time. Charity Finance Leadership Forum Exclusively for FDs of larger charities, delegates will collaborate and debate the common challenges you face as finance leaders. Over the four sessions we will hear from some of the leading names, both within and outside of the charity sector, who will provide their perspectives on the key strategic financial and non-financial issues of the day. Please note that to qualify to attend the Charity Finance Leadership Forum your charity s annual income must be at least 10million. Charity Property Conference Experts from the charity and commercial sectors will come together to present their strategic outlook for the property market, providing property managers with the insight to make the most from their charity s property portfolio. This conference focuses on the two main dynamics that charities perpetually face: the maximisation of value from owned property assets with all its associated issues and the control of risks and costs as tenants or landlords. Charity VAT & Tax Conference Split over advanced and less complex streams so that your tax specialist can be confident that presentations will be pitched at an approriate level, our expert speakers will provide essential guidance and critical updates to ensure your charity is not left behind in the ever-evolving world of taxation. Early prices are available on bookings received by 9 September. Bookings can be made using the form at the back of this brochure, online at or by phoning my team on I look forward to seeing you 17 October. Andrew Hind, editor, Charity Finance Sponsorship and exhibition A limited number of sponsorship and exhibition opportunities are available across all three conferences. Our packages offer an effective platform for you to showcase your products and services to the finance teams of the largest and best known charities. For more information please contact Phil Bishop on or phil.bishop@civilsociety.co.uk.

3 17 October 2011 Grand Connaught Rooms, Central London. Exclusively for FDs of larger charities, delegates will collaborate and debate the common challenges you face as finance leaders. 09:00 Registration & coffee 09:30 Introduction Andrew Hind, former chief executive of the Charity Commission and editor of Charity Finance 09:40 Charities and public trust Trust is no longer a commodity that is acquired, but rather a benefit that is bestowed. Public trust is the lifeblood of all organisations, and no more so than with charities. Richard Sambrook, global vice-chairman of Edelman, takes us through the findings from their latest Trust Barometer, introducing us to the fresh concept of a trust architecture and asking what are the new lessons that today s leaders need to know? Richard Sambrook, global vice-chairman of Edelman, and previously director of BBC Global News 11:00 Break Charities and business - the new collaboration The relationship between charities and business is changing fast. An increasing number of charities are now viewing business not as the enemy but as the best channel through which to achieve their charitable aims. Oxfam take us through the benefits they have seen from a radical evaluation of their approach to business, and the impact of moving to a new era of collaboration. They will be joined by panelists from the private sector to ask whether the time has come to view the relationship between charities and business as the key to the future of both sectors Lunch Gerry Boyle, head of business relations, Oxfam Mike Barry, head of sustainable business, Marks & Spencer John Williams, board member, Business in the Community, and co-founder and senior adviser, Fishburn Hedges Data security the challenge for the modern leader The IMF, Sony, NASA, Microsoft, Google, Lockhead Martin, Honda and the Iranian government - just some of the organisations that have experienced security breaches with their IT. As forward thinking charities embrace the benefits of social media, CRM and cloud computing, our expert panel look at the associated dangers, and why leaders need to prioritise these risks and what might happen if they don t Break Baroness Pauline Neville-Jones, lately minister of state for security, and government special representative to business on cyber security Matt Holland, head of information security, NSPCC, and board member of the Charities Security Forum Simon Bulleyment, chief information officer, haysmacintyre The FD as trustee The best leaders are the empathetic ones, and there is nothing more useful than looking at similar issues from a different perspective. Two themes which come together in our final session of the day as our panel examines the professional and personal benefits which charity FDs, their executive colleagues, and staff in their teams can gain from serving as a trustee in another charity. Our panel will take us on a personal journey through their experience of trusteeship and the benefits it has provided back in the day-job Close Kevin Gundle, a founder trustee of ARK, and senior executive officer of Aurum Fund Management Caroline Moore, financial director, Diabetes UK Mark Goldring, chief executive, Mencap, and trustee of AMREF UK

4 17 October 2011 Grand Connaught Rooms, Central London. Charities own, manage and occupy vast swathes of property of almost every conceivable type offices, hospitals, care homes, farmland and countryside, stately homes, shops, museums, theatres, schools, playing fields, churches, residential the list is almost never ending. This conference focuses on the two main dynamics that charities perpetually face: the maximisation of value from owned property assets with all its associated issues and the control of risks and costs as tenants or landlords. 09:00 Registration & coffee 09:40 Chair s welcome 09:45 Market tips and insights We begin the day with a revealing insight into what s actually happening in the property market right now, what the future holds for different property types and locations, and the tips and tricks that successful charities use for managing their portfolios. Zac Goodman, Third Sector Property Managing commercial and residential leasehold risks Drawing on real examples, Will Scott and Jamie Huard highlight the greater risks to charities when leasing property, including restrictive covenants, procedures for dilapidations and early termination provisions. They will also consider how to avoid the dangers inherent in residential lettings. Jamie Huard and Will Scott, Bates Wells & Braithwaite Break Thinking of moving here s what to do! Nick Ivey and Jamie Huard focus on the issues involved with moving properties including the type of property available, sharing resources with other organisations and the many legal issues that need to be covered in a property move. Nick Ivey and Jamie Huard, Bates Wells & Braithwaite The trustee s perspective An effective relationship between your charity s property manager and their trustees helps your portfolio to work harder. Get it wrong and even the small decisions turn into insurmountable issues. In this session we get the first hand view of a charity trustee chair with substantial property experience, who will help us unravel the challenges that a trustee faces in this area, and what we can do to make the relationship work. Tim Waldron, chair of YMCA and vice-chair of Third Sector Property Lunch The surveyor s role A leading property surveyor explains the main factors to consider across a notional mixed property portfolio, including residential, retail and office, as well as covering Section 36 requirements for the disposal of charity land From derelict to development What do you need to think about in the procurement of your charity's new offices? We get a bird's eye view of all the issues involved when transforming a run down building into a charity's new HQ: from the do's and don'ts of the construction game to all the legal issues that you cannot do without knowing. Charles Anderson and Edward Banyard Smith, Farrer & Co Break Getting the most out of your properties But what of your charity's other property interests? Our experts take us through some of the more topical issues confronting owners and occupiers of property, including governance and other trustee issues, disposing of property properly, overage and pre-emption rights, dealing with legacies of residential properties, preserving, protecting and enhancing your land through the planning system, the impact of restrictive and other covenants and other key considerations. Gavin Acheson and Karen Phull, Farrer & Co Property Q&A A panel of leading experts will take questions from the floor on all aspects of property and discuss issues arising from Section 36. Anne-Marie Piper, Farrer & Co Nick Ivey, Bates Wells & Braithwaite Tim Waldron, Third Sector Property Close Sponsors:

5 17 October 2011 Grand Connaught Rooms, Central London. Every day our expert speakers help charities run more efficiently by ensuring they comply with, and take advantage of, tax regulations. This single day allows the tax specialist in your finance team to garner some of that advice and ensure your charity isn t left behind in the ever more complex tax framework. The day is structured over two streams advanced and less complex with delegates free to move between the two throughout the day. We hope that this will ensure presentations are pitched at an approriate level. We will contact delegates before the conference to arrange their choice of sessions. 09:00 Registration & coffee 09:40 Chairs welcomes Richard Bray, finance, regulatory & taxes manager, Cancer Research UK, and vice chair, Charity Tax Group Gareth Jones, senior reporter, Charity Finance 09:45 Latest updates in charity tax The Charity Tax Group gives us a whirlwind tour through the developments that affect us all. We get an inside view on their current lobbying, updates on imminent legislative changes, the latest consultations, and a forward look at the threats and possibilities around the corner. John Hemming, head of tax at the Wellcome Trust, and chair, Charity Tax Group Less Complex Advanced Introduction to charity tax The capital goods scheme and combined methods Designed for those who are new or inexperienced in the sector, this is a back to basics look at the rules, regulations and common strategies involved in VAT and corporation tax / income tax for charities. Andrea Sofield, partner, Grant Thornton Break Basics of Gift Aid An introduction to the Gift Aid scheme, including the administrative requirements of claiming it back, incentives for taxpayers, the benefits a donor can receive in association with making a gift and HMRC audits Cross border transactions what are the VAT implications? What issues should you consider when buying or selling either goods or services abroad? We unearth the latest VAT and statistical reporting requirements, in particular the changing rules on supply and the practical impact of the reverse charge to services received from overseas. Socrates Socratous, partner, SOC VAT Lunch Introduction to employment tax Key issues for charities in relation to taking on staff, problems in using consultants, tax consequences for getting it wrong, plus volunteers and the related tax issues. Luke Savvas, tax partner, Buzzacott We take an in-depth look at how the scope of purchases caught in the capital goods scheme is changing, with a particular focus on non-business use. We will also be led through the new facility which allows charities to combine non-business and partial exemption into one calculation. Graham Elliott, partner, haysmacintyre Tainted charitable donations The latest developments in the new rules on tainted charitable donations are investigated, including HMRC practice, the overlap with transitional rules on substantial donors and other non-charitable expenditure regulations. Luke Savvas, tax partner, Buzzacott Developments in Gift Aid This year s budget has wide reaching implications on Gift Aid; proposals to relax documentation for donations of up to 10, the new reclaim forms (R68i), the move to an electronic claims system, and developments on a potential Gift Aid database. What does all this mean for us? Property The often complex tax issues associated with property transactions by charities, including VAT, corporation tax / income tax and Stamp Duty Land Tax, the use by charities of property for the purpose of their charitable activities, the holding of property by charities as an investment, the implications of undertaking improvements to property, and the disposal of property by charities. Andrea Sofield, partner, Grant Thornton Tax issues with fundraising and challenge events We look at the basic VAT rules applicable to a range of fundraising initiatives, including the complexities of structuring challenge events and handling the participators, and contrast this with the rules around Gift Aid Break Penalties The reasons why a charity might incur a tax penalty isn t always clear until it happens. We review recent tribunal cases to explore how HMRC appear to be handling these fairly new rules and how we can prepare ourselves better. Graham Elliott, partner, haysmacintyre Close Sponsors: Employment tax: recent case studies A review of recent cases and the decisions which will impact on the charity sector, together with practical issues and tips for better risk planning. Latest VAT cases A watchful eye over our tribunals and courts can help us to understand new areas of exposure and opportunity. We get a helping hand through this often complex world to appreciate the rulings that effect us. Socrates Socratous, partner, SOC VAT
