2 As we settle down to a new government and new political landscape, this conference will discuss and explore the future of our criminal justice system; what significant roles can our voluntary sector, probation service and youth justice system play in shaping the future of criminal justice and ultimately what impact can they have on community sentencing; and how can community sentencing be best promoted to increase public confidence in the criminal justice system. 3 Community sentences cut crime campaign The campaign aims to encourage public and government support from successful community sentences. The Howard League for Penal Reform believes that well resourced and well structured programmes raise public protection, bringing down the rate of offending and repay the damage done by crime in a way which custodial sentences cannot. The campaign has three strands: The Community Programmes Awards an annual award for the country s most successful community programmes. Open days we will organise local events round the country to highlight the excellent work of each winning programme and to educate local stakeholders about the successes of the schemes. Website we will create a dedicated website with information about good practice in community sentencing. The site will have a dedicated page for each award category, which will allow practitioners from all over the country and internationally, to get detailed information about what the best programmes are doing. The objectives of the Community Programmes Awards are to: encourage foster good practice improve awareness and understanding of community programmes encourage confidence in their use promote excellence and creativity stimulate public debate and support for community interventions share information between practitioners celebrate and recognise outstanding schemes The competition is open to statutory agencies and voluntary organisation, which are developing innovative community schemes. The programmes nominated are required to show for example; the are part of a community sentence are rehabilitative and help prevent future offending realistic and positive recognise the individual circumstances of offenders offer a programme tailored to individual needs involve users in planning and evaluation The Community Programmes Awards 2010 is supported by: CIFC
