6 ASPEN INSTITUTE Security Concepts and Conflict Management: Bios Lieutenant General (ret) Jürgen Bornemann General Bornemann started his military service in the German Armed Forces in He studied Economics and Politics at the University of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg. Following attendance of the General Staff Officer Course at the German Armed Forces College in Hamburg ( ) and the Royal Belgian Defense College in Brussels ( ) he served in several command and staff functions in the German Bundeswehr. At the level of the German Ministry of Defense in Bonn/Berlin he acted as Military Assistant to the State Secretary for Military Policy, as Branch Chief Military Policy and International Military Cooperation, and Deputy Head of the Military Policy Division. At the level of NATO-Headquarters in Brussels he was appointed as Assistant Director Plans and Policy IMS, as German Military Representative to NATO and EU, and finally as the Director General IMS. He retired from military service in July General Bornemann lives in Berlin and works as an independent adviser for security and military policy. Peter Eitel Peter Eitel is a fellow at the Institute for Strategic Future Analyses of the Carl-Friedrich-von-Weizsäcker Society, where he is currently doing research on policy advising methods and forms of dialog and moderation as tools of strategic risk management. Previously, Peter worked for the German private Institute for Democracy, Development and Security (DIDES), the Result Group GmbH, and the German-African Business Association. He studied political science and history at the University of Greifswald as well as global security at the UK Defense Academy. Valeska Esch Valeska Esch works as Senior Program Officer with the Aspen Institute Germany and is responsible for Aspen s Policy Program on Southeast Europe. Valeska joined Aspen in February She holds an MA in Political Science, International and European Law, and English Language and Literature with a focus on Security Politics, the European Union, and Southeast Europe, for which she studied at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the University of Birmingham. Ms. Esch has published on the EU s engagement in Kosovo. Prior to joining Aspen, she worked for an event management firm in Bonn and interned at the United Nations University s Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS). Tinatin Karosanidze Tinatin Karosanidze is associate professor at the Free University of Tbilisi. She gives lectures in Arabic language, the Middle East Religions, and International Terrorism. In 1999, she graduated from Tbilisi Institute of Asia and Africa, faculty of International relations and History of the Middle East Countries (Arabic department). In , she studied Arabic language at Cairo University and "Wafidin" language school. In 2006, she got her PhD in world history with a thesis on: "Islamic fundamentalism in modern Egyptian politics: Strategy of "Muslim Brothers" and other radical Islamic organizations". In , she worked as Assistant in the Near and Middle East department at G. Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies. In she worked in the Embassy of the republic of Iraq in Georgia as assistant of the Ambassador and translator. In /VI she got the Order of Honor from the President of Georgia for her contribution in Georgian Education and academic field. Since 2013 she has been member of CELA Central Eurasia Leadership Academy. From January-May, 2014 she was Carnegie research fellow and a visiting scholar in SAIS at Johns Hopkins University, Washington DC. She is author of 15 publications and one monograph.

7 Security Concepts and Conflict Management: Bios ASPEN INSTITUTE Prof. Tamara Kovziridze Tamara Kovziridze has been a professor at the Free University of Tbilisi since 2013 and affiliated scholar at the Free University of Brussels (VUB) since She holds a Master s degree in political science, economics and English philology from the University of Heidelberg, Germany and a Ph.D. from the Free University of Brussels. In Tamara was associated professor at the Tbilisi State University. Before joining the Free University of Tbilisi, in Tamara Kovziridze held various senior positions in the Government of Georgia. Among others she was Deputy Minister of Economy in and Chief Adviser to the Prime Minister and Head of Advisory Group on Foreign Relations in She participated in planning and implementation of various economic reforms in Georgia and guided a number of important trade negotiations. Tamara Kovziridze s research interests include trade policy, economic regulations, ethno-political conflicts, European Integration and federalism. She has a number of international publications on these topics. Tamara is fluent in English, German and Russian, and speaks French and Dutch. Rüdiger Lentz Rüdiger Lentz is the Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Germany. Previously he served as the Executive Director of the German-American Heritage Foundation and Museum in Washington from 2009 until From November 1998 until December 2009, he was the Washington Bureau Chief and Senior Diplomatic Correspondent for Deutsche Welle. Prior to his assignment in Washington, he served as Deutsche Welle s Brussels Bureau Chief. Before joining Deutsche Welle, Lentz worked as a correspondent for the German news magazine Der Spiegel, after having served in the German Armed Forces for eight years, and as a TV commentator and reporter at ARD/WDR, Germany s largest public TV and radio station. Lentz has also held various positions including that of Editor in Chief at RIAS-TV Berlin from As the Executive Director of German TV from he was responsible for the branding and market entrance plan of German TV in the U.S.. He has been a Visiting Lecturer at Harvard University, the School of Foreign Service in Washington and a regular guest on CNN and C-Span. Lentz was born 1947 and studied international relations, history and economics at the University of Hamburg. He is a long time member of the Atlantik-Bruecke and a founding member of the German American Business Council (GABC) in Washington. Prof. Peter Schmidt Prof. Dr. Peter Schmidt is Honorary Professor at the University of Mannheim (Germany) and associate lecturer at the University of Munich. After his time as an assistant professor at the University of Mannheim, Professor Schmidt worked as a senior fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, SWP) from 1983 onwards. From he was head of the Security Policy Division at SWP. During the period he was also the head of the European Division as chairman of SWP s Research Council. He spent sabbatical leaves at the RAND Corporation (Santa Monica), Fondation pour les Etudes de Défense Nationale (Paris) and the Institute for Security Studies (Paris). Between 2008 and 2010, he served as a Visiting Professor at Queen s University and as McNaughton-Vanier Visiting Scholar at the Royal Military College (RMC) in Kingston, Ontario during the summer and fall term. During the spring terms, he lectured at the Bundeswehr University in Munich. He teaches regularly simulation courses at Cranfield University (United Kingdom). He has published widely especially on French and German security, defense and arms control policy, Franco-German relations, armament policy, on NATO and transatlantic relations, EC/EU, WEU, CSCE/OSCE developments, crisis-management operations (Congo, Georgia, Afghanistan). Recently, he edited a special volume of Contemporary Security Policy on European Security Policy: Strategic Culture in Operation? together with Benjamin Zyla. In 2008 he edited the book: A Hybrid Relationship Transatlantic Security Cooperation Beyond NATO (Peter Lang).
