3 CARTER CENTER PRESENTERS John Hardman, M.D. President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. John Hardman provides leadership to achieve the Carter Center s commitment to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and control and eradicate neglected diseases. He joined the Center in 1989 as head of the Initiative to Reduce Global Tobacco Use, was the first director of the Mental Health Program, and was named executive director of the Center in In 2007 his title was changed to president and CEO. Dr. Hardman received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, trained in psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic, and completed a child psychiatry fellowship at Emory University. He serves on the faculty of Emory University School of Medicine and was medical director of Peachford Hospital. He currently serves on the boards of the International Fertilizer Development Center, the Task Force for Global Health, the Blum Center for Developing Economies, the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights, and the Sasakawa Africa Association. John Stremlau, Ph.D. Vice President, Peace Programs Dr. John Stremlau leads the Center s programs to advance human rights, democracy, and conflict resolution globally; regional cooperation in the Americas; and promotion of grassroots democracy, rule of law, and social justice in China. He recently led election missions to Sierra Leone, Liberia, Côte d Ivoire, Guinea, and Kenya. From 1998 to 2006, he resided in South Africa where he was Jan Smuts Professor and head of international relations and the founding director of the Centre for Africa s International Relations at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Previously, he served as senior adviser to the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict in Washington, D.C., deputy director for policy

4 planning in the office of the U.S. Secretary of State, strategic planning officer for the World Bank, and an officer of the Rockefeller Foundation. Dr. Stremlau publishes extensively on foreign affairs and is a frequent media commentator on international network news programs. He authored The International Politics of the Nigerian Civil War and edited several books. Paul Emerson, Ph.D. Director, Trachoma Control Program; Co-Director, Malaria Control Program Dr. Paul Emerson joined The Carter Center as director for the Trachoma Control Program in 2004 and became co-director of the Malaria Control Program in He oversees program activities in Ethiopia, Mali, Nigeria, Niger, Sudan, and South Sudan. During his tenure, Dr. Emerson has formed partnerships with academic institutions to use trachoma control programs as platforms for operational research. He currently chairs the International Coalition for Trachoma Control and was awarded the 2012 Gold Medal by the International Organization against Trachoma. In 2009, Dr. Emerson became an adjunct assistant professor at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. Dr. Emerson holds a doctorate from the University of Durham, a master s degree from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and of the Royal Entomological Society. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles. Phillip J. Wise Jr. Vice President, Operations and Development Phil Wise oversees the Center s offices of Public Information, Institutional Development, and Human Resources, among other duties. During the Carter administration, Mr. Wise was appointments secretary to President Carter. He also served in Jimmy Carter s gubernatorial administration. He earned his bachelor s degree in industrial management from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
