2 Treatment Technology Breakthroughs - February 11 th : 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm (Room 204) Medical breakthroughs in nanotechnology, gene therapy and the use of robots promise to significantly improve health and the overall quality of life. This panel of experts will focus on developments in medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Discussion topics will include the process of developing an innovation pipeline, the challenges of bringing a product to market, and how proposed healthcare reform is expected to affect innovation development. Attendees will receive a multidimensional view of both the future of medicine and how healthcare organizations and professionals collaborate and compete to develop products. Moderator Dr. Charles D. Frame Adjust Associate Professor of Marketing, Goizueta Business School (Emory University) Chip_Frame@bus.emory.edu C: Charles D. Frame holds a joint appointment at Emory University, where he serves in the faculty of Goizueta Business School as an adjunct associate professor of marketing, and the School of Medicine, where he s the executive director of the Emory Center for Healthcare Leadership. In this capacity, Frame works with major healthcare organizations to assess their performance and develop their leadership. At Goizueta, Frame teaches a variety of marketing courses at the MBA and Executive MBA levels, including marketing research, marketing management, and melds his expertise in business and healthcare with an innovative course on biotech market analysis. Frame is a co-editor and contributor to the Jossey-Bass book, The 21st Century Healthcare Leader and has worked as an consultant to a variety of firms including, The American Cancer Society, AT&T, Champion International and Johnson & Johnson. 3 Panelists Marc Girardot Founder, Director of Business Development, BioMed Design Mr. Girardot brings over 10 years of combined experience in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Mr. Girardot is a founding member of BioMed Design, LLC where he was instrumental in successfully selling trademarks and licensing patented technologies for the chemical treatment of implantable biological materials. Prior to BioMed Design, Mr. Girardot worked in discovery R&D groups at Boehringer-Ingelheim and AstraZeneca as a medicinal chemist and in marketing at Solvay Pharmaceuticals, where he provided actionable marketing recommendations and created an internal scenario planning process. Mr. Girardot holds a Master in Business Administration (MBA) from Emory University s Goizueta Business School and a Bachelor s degree in Chemistry from Boston University. Pete Carino Sales Manager, Intuitive Surgical Pete has led a variety of projects and teams in the healthcare industry. He currently serves as Sales Manager at Intuitive Surgical. Intuitive Surgical is the manufacturer of robotic surgical systems, including the da Vinci Surgical System, and one of world s fastest growing healthcare companies. Prior to joining Intuitive Surgical, Mr. Carino was most recently Director of Image Guided Surgery for BrainLAB, a leading software maker for providers of minimally invasive surgery. Pete is a graduate of the University of Dayton. Dr. Raj Laungani Director of Robotic Urology, St. Joseph s Hospital Raj is a fellowship-trained urologist, specializing in minimally invasive and robotic urology. He serves as the Director of Robotic Urology and Chairman of the Prostate Cancer Center at St. Joseph s Hospital. Dr. Laungani graduated Cum Laude from Brooklyn College, received his medical degree from the SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, New York, and completed his residency and fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Laungani has numerous peer-reviewed publications on urological advances and robotics and has lectured and operated internationally. Recognized by peers and the media for his accomplishments, he is member of several professional organizations including the American Medical Association. Jennifer E. Tyler Associate, Healthcare Practice Group, Balch & Bingham LLP Jennifer E. Tyler is an attorney with Balch & Bingham, LLP's Healthcare Practice Group. Jenny advises a wide range of clients, including hospitals, physician groups and individual physicians in areas such as Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, Certificate of Need, Licensure, joint ventures, acquisitions, sales, contract negotiations and several other healthcare regulatory and compliance areas. Jenny is a member of the Bioscience Leadership Council of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and also serves on the Board of the Young Leadership
4 Committee of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Jenny is a 2003 alumni of the Goizueta Business School. Brian Mitchell Associate Dean, MBA Program, Goizueta Business School (Emory University) Brian Mitchell is the Associate Dean for the Full Time MBA Programs, responsible for marketing to companies and prospective students, coordination with Admissions and CMC, and sustaining the overall student experience. Brian is a veteran of the pharmaceutical marketing and consulting industries, including eight years at Solvay Pharmaceuticals in various marketing and leadership roles. His managerial experience covers brand strategy, research, development and new product launch and implementation. He earned his bachelor s degree in marketing from Morehouse College in Atlanta, and graduated from Emory in 2000 with a Goizueta MBA and an MPH from the Rollins School of Public Health.
5 Panel Structure 90 Minutes Audience: Primarily MBA students, MBA alumni and other graduate students. Brief Introduction of Each Panelist by Professor Frame (5 Minutes) Topic 1: An Overview (Each Panelist 3 minutes each, Total 15 minutes). How did you become interested in treatment technology? How is my organization helping develop treatment technology? Topic 2: The Process and Challenge of Developing Technology (Total 15 minutes) What is your experience of the process and challenges of developing a new medical device or pharmaceutical drug and attaining FDA approval? Topic 3: Healthcare Policy (Total 15 minutes) What is the impact of healthcare reform on these sectors? If you could add one policy change, what would it be and why? Topic 4: Getting Buy-in from Patients and Providers (15 minutes) How is ROI justified to physicians and patients? Is direct to consumer advertising an effective and safe communication method? The physician s perspective Topic 4: Leadership Opportunities (15 minutes) Where role does effective management in development and application of treatment technology?
