2 Kirsten Anderson, M.D., M.P.H. Chief Medical Officer, Accountable Care Solutions Emerging Businesses, Aetna Dr. Anderson is the Chief Medical Officer of the Accountable Care Solutions division of Aetna. Accountable Care Solutions is one of the businesses in the Emerging Business division of the Finance department at Aetna. In her current role, Dr. Anderson designs high value clinical strategies for implementation in Accountable Care relationships. These clinical strategies focus on partnering with health systems to improve the quality of healthcare and promoting cost efficiencies in the overall provision of health care across all settings. Prior to her current role, Dr. Anderson functioned as the Chief of Staff to the Chief Medical Officer. In that role she helped promote the overall strategic goals of the clinical community at Aetna. In addition, she oversaw a team of analysts who examined medical trend across clinical conditions and advocated for implementation of programs to deliver effective, safe, patient-centered care. Dr. Anderson also provided strategic direction for Aetna Oncology Solutions, which is the Aetna approach to rewarding high quality and cost effective care in Oncology. In a prior position at Aetna, Dr. Anderson was a medical director in the Northeast Region in patient management, where she was responsible for utilization management and for the implementation of high performance provider initiatives for the New England Region. She has worked as a general internist in primary care in Wallingford, CT and has experience working as a medical director for physician organizations as well as managed care plans. Dr. Kirsten Anderson is a graduate of Harvard College and obtained her medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. She completed an M.P.H. at the Columbia University School of Public Health. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital and is board certified in Internal Medicine. Her professional affiliations are with the American College of Physicians and America s Health Insurance Plans.
3 Kevin J. Counihan, M.B.A. Chief Executive Officer, Connecticut Health Insurance Exchange Kevin J. Counihan was chosen by Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy as the State s Health Insurance Exchange Chief Executive Officer in July Mr. Counihan s first-hand experience implementing healthcare reform in Massachusetts provide him with crucial insight into what it takes to quickly and successfully build a health insurance exchange. Additionally, as Connecticut continues to be a front runner in ACA exchange implementation, Kevin has set himself apart as a nimble, innovative, and effective leader who is prepared to handle the unique challenges of exchange implementation. Mr. Counihan has over 30 years experience in the health care and insurance exchange industries. Prior to his Connecticut appointment, he held the position of President of CHOICE Administrators in California, a private health insurance exchange that serves 10,000 employer groups and their members. Prior to CHOICE Administrators, Mr. Counihan served as the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for the Commonwealth of MA Health Insurance Connector Authority (also known as the MA Health Connector). As CMO at the Health Connector, Kevin led a marketing campaign which set the bar for inventive outreach in local communities, including partnerships with strong local brands like the Red Sox. Since its inception in 2006, the MassConnector helped bring the uninsured adult population in Massachusetts from 10% down to less than 2%, and now covers 99.8% of children in that state. Prior to that position, Kevin was Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Tufts Health Plan of Massachusetts from 1993 to He also served as regional Vice President for Cigna Corp. in Bloomfield, and has worked as an adjunct professor of health policy at Northeastern University since Mr. Counihan holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA in finance and marketing from Northwestern University s Kellogg School of Management.
4 Joseph Quaranta, M.D. President, New Haven Community Medical Group Dr. Joseph Quaranta is the President of the New Haven Community Medical Group (NHCMG) an IPA with approximately 570 physician members in the Greater New Haven area. There is representation from Primary Care physicians as well as most specialties. NHCMG has several clinical integration and disease management programs including Diabetes, Pediatric Asthma, and Heart/Stroke. They have had pay for performance incentives built upon these programs in place for several years. They have also been active in developing accountable care organizations and shared savings programs with both medicare and commercial insurers. Dr. Quaranta is a graduate of Holy Cross College, New York University School of Medicine and the Yale-New Haven Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program. He is a partner at Quinnipiac Medical of Branford and has practiced Internal Medicine there since He is active in the teaching programs at Yale University precepting medical students and residents. He is an Attending Physician and member of the Medical Board of Yale-New Haven Hospital.
5 Adam Silverman, M.D., F.A.C.P. Medical Staff, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center Dr. Silverman was born and raised in Abington, Pennsylvania. Dr. Silverman graduated Cum Laude from Middlebury College, with a BA in Geography. He received his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State University in He did his medical residency at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, where he received the honor of being chosen as a Chief Medical Resident. He then went on to spend 5 years in private practice in Chicago and Norwalk, CT before settling into a career as an academic physician at the UConn School of Medicine. During his tenure at UConn, he grew a successful hospitalist and primary care internal medicine practice, was recognized for teaching excellence, and eventually led the 256-member UConn Medical Group. Most recently, Dr. Silverman transitioned to Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center to lead the primary care service line and to serve as the Outreach Section leader of the Connecticut Institute for Primary Care Innovation. Dr. Silverman is dedicated to developing high performing, innovative primary care practices and systems of care to deliver exceptional care and value to all patients. He views health care reform as an opportunity for physicians to determine the best clinical model of care to deliver better outcomes for lower costs before other parties dictate a business model that may or may not have our patients interests in mind. Dr. Silverman is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
6 C. Todd Staub, M.D. Board Chairman, ProHealth Physicians Todd Staub is the Chairman of the Board for ProHealth Physicians, an integrated primary care group practice in Connecticut. ProHealth Physicians serves 350,000 patients in more than 70 locations throughout the state. Todd was a founding member of the group in Physician owned and led, ProHealth Physicians is redesigning health care delivery around the basic principles of primary care wellness, prevention, early detection, optimal intervention, and the coordination of care. The goal of these efforts is to improve the health status of people at lower cost, as individuals and as a population. He worked closely with the management team and boards in the successful implementation of an integrated EHR/practice management system and in the attainment of NCQA Level 3 Patient- Centered Medical Home recognition in all practice sites. Currently, he is helping the organization to prepare an Accountable Care Organization application to Medicare and to lay the foundation for population health management under new value-based healthcare contracts. Dr. Staub worked with others in ProHealth to found the Connecticut Center for Primary Care, a nonprofit organization devoted to research and education on primary care issues and serves as Vice- Chair. He helped to create the Primary Care Coalition of Connecticut, which brings together frontline providers from diverse practice settings across the state, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. He is the current chair of the Coalition. A graduate of UCLA, he attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at the New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center. He served for two years with the National Health Service Corps working in a neighborhood health center in Boston. He then worked in solo and small group practice until the founding of ProHealth Physicians. Todd has served on legislative committees in Connecticut and is an active member of the American College of Physicians. He practices general internal medicine in the town of Litchfield.
