1 SPONSORS Do you ever catch yourself thinking or hear someone saying, What difference can one person make? Think of this: Ebby visited Bill W. in an effort to stay away from that first drink. Bill was subsequently detoxed and on a business trip to Akron, Ohio the thought came to him that if he were to remain sober he needed to seek out another alcoholic. His meeting with Dr. Bob was the foundation of what would become Alcoholics Anonymous (For more details, please read ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS COMES OF AGE.) Eighty years and several million members later, the affect of that one man s visit with his friend is immense. From that visit a fellowship of men and women sprang up world wide crossing cultural, gender, political, religious and geographic boundaries around the world. The pamphlet QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ON SPONSORSHIP is an excellent resource for anyone seeking a sponsor in A.A. In A.A. The sponsor and the sponsored come together as equals, just as Bill and Dr. Bob did. Anyone who has made some progress in the recovery program has experience to share with someone seeking help with their problems with alcohol. All we are required to do in this fellowship is to share our experience, strength and hope with each other; there are no courses or certifications required to become a sponsor. As often as not, it s the person with a month sobriety that the newcomer connects with. And the month-long sober member needs this newcomer to walk with and share his/ her experience with to further ensure their own sobriety. Most members of A.A. owe their sobriety to the fact that someone else took a special interest in them and was willing to share a great gift with them. Sponsorship is a way of continuing that interest. Individuals and groups cannot afford to lose sight of the importance of sponsorship, the importance of taking a special interest in a confused alcoholic who wants to stop drinking. - Questions and Answers on Sponsorship, p. 27 REMEMBER YOUR TICKETS FOR THE SPONSORSHIP BREAKFAST, SEPTEMBER 26TH (SEE EVENT NOTICE PAGE 4) Office Hours of Operation Mon- Fri.8:00am to 6:30pm Saturday.9:30am to 1:00pm ** NEW TIME Sunday 9:30am to 1:00pm The office will be closed Monday, Sept. 7th for Labour Day 3457 Kingsway, Vancouver V5R 5L or staff@vancouveraa.ca; Portions reprinted with permission of A.A. 2 INTERGROUP CORNER Unity Recovery 3457 Kingsway, Vancouver V5R 5L Service Do you want an uplifting Meeting? Join us at Participation Group which meets every Thursday evening at 8 pm at Granville & 54th Avenue. There is good Fellowship before and after the meeting & always a spread of delicious food. We welcome newcomers to the Fellowship & also members from any group. Sharing our stories with each other gives us the strength and courage we need to continue with our AA journey with love that grows and flourishes. So come and share our laughter, hope and unconditional love. We look forward to seeing you Thursday. -0- Is your group interesting & unique? Tell us about it and we will include the write up in a future newsletter! August 18th was election night at the Intergroup meeting. Thank you to our outgoing Operating Committee: Zaidah; Chrystal and Eugene. Regrettably Rob had to step down as well. Finance Chair Wayne F was replaced by Steve M. in this rotation. Thank you both. Welcome to the new Operating Committee: Emma from Grandview, Chair; Margaret from Harris Road, 1st Vice Chair; Jeremy from Dolphin, 2nd Vice Chair. A members: Redge from Sober Sunday, Ryan from Denman and Jessie from Reflections; and B members: Jim from Participation, Jes from Lougheed Speaker & Justin from Live & Let Live. The Answering Service has informed us the cost of their coverage will be increased substantially as a result of the amount of time each call takes and the lack of members willing to take their calls through the night. Of course we did not budget for this huge increase, and your Intergroup and Operating Committees sought a new provider, which has been secured. Four Star will be taking the calls effective October 1st. It appears the problem arose due to groups and members not carrying through on commitments. It is CRITICAL that every group signed up for telephone answering have no less than 2 people on each shift. It is also essential that when you give us your name as being willing to take late night 12th step calls, you are available to do so. If that changes, please let us know immediately so we are not faced with these huge cost overruns. The Inventory Committee has been formed and ratified. Chairman Kim tells us she is calling the group together to review questions to be asked and to plan for the Inventory Meeting, currently scheduled to take place November 17th. All are welcome to attend the monthly Intergroup Meetings. If your group is currently not being served by an Intergroup Representative, please encourage members of your group to consider this appointment. It is this body that represents you in making decisions affecting your office. Now that summer vacation is over, consider putting your name forward to take a phone shift. We have openings for 10 pm to 2 am as well as day time shifts. Call Shelina or Viki for details. Chair people are needed for Detox and Treatment Committees. Thank you to Jocelyn and Chrystal for stepping into Public Information and Hospital Chair positions. ***URGENT NOTICE*** Your office was contacted recently with a notice of concern from one of the churches. Apparently our groups are being less than responsible around smoking on church property. If your group allows smoking outside the meeting, BE SURE YOU CLEAN UP the grounds before you leave. Failure to do so can result in expulsion from the property. Phone Room Statistics July June May General 1,116 1,084 1,123 12th Step Al-Anon Ans Serv Website 17,743 16,171 16,799
