2 HOW IT WORKS Steps and Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous 3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him. Third Step Prayer God, I offer myself to Thee to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life.. May I do Thy will always! -Alcoholics Anonymous p. 63 SELFISHNESS! So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making. They arise out of ourselves, and the alcoholic is an extreme example of self-will run riot, though he usually doesn t think so. Above everything, we alcoholics must be rid of this selfishness. We must, or it kills us! God makes that possible. And there often seems no way of entirely getting rid of self without His aid. Many of us had moral and philosophical convictions galore, but we could not live up to them even though we would have liked to. Neither could we reduce our self-centeredness much by wishing or trying on our own power. We had to have God s help. -Alcoholics Anonymous p. 62

3 3. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. The Long Form Our membership ought to include all who suffer alcoholism. Hence we may refuse none who wish to recover. Nor ought A.A. membership ever depend upon money or conformity. Any two or three alcoholics gathered together for sobriety may call themselves an A.A. group, provided that, as a group, they have no other affiliation. For more information on A.A. in Lansing visit aalansing.org or call From the 12 & 12 This tradition is packed with meaning. For A.A. is really saying to every serious drinker, You are an A.A. member if you say so. You can declare yourself in; nobody can keep you out. No matter who you are, no matter how low you ve gone, no matter how grave your emotional complications even your crimes we still can t deny you A.A. We don t wan to keep you out. We aren t a bit afraid you ll harm us, never mind how twister or violent you may be. We just want to be sure that you get the same great chance for sobriety that we ve had. So you re an A.A. member the minute you declare yourself. 12 & 12 pg 139

4 March 2015 New 11th Step Meeting 1915 E. Michigan Ave, Lansing, MI The Secret is Out A New Meeting for 11 th Step Meditation Has Started! The new (2015) Mid-Michigan Area Meeting Directory has just been published by Lansing Central AA. A new meeting is listed for Mason on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. It s listed as (C,D) - (C) Closed and (D) Discussion meeting. An error on both parts! It s an (O) Open meeting and it s an 11th meeting to teach meditation. Al-Anon members and AA members attend regularly. The 11th Step of Alcoholics Anonymous states: Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God AS WE UNDERSTOOD HIM, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. Here is our meeting preamble: We don t open this meeting with a moment of silence as most of this meeting will occur in silence. So we open this meeting by welcoming you to the Mason Fellowship of AA and the Wednesday 11th Step Meditation Meeting. This is an Open Meeting of AA. All are welcome if you wish to learn and develop meditation and increase your conscious contact with your Higher Power. We open the meeting with 20 to 25 minutes of meditation followed by sharing. Why drive to Mason on Wednesdays? Bill W. and Dr. Bob used the word meditation in their original Big Book writings during the 1930 s Why would they use this term at a time when very few people in American society even knew of meditation? We believe it was because they knew that silence quieting our minds as a form of prayer was very important for the development of our spirituality. Come to a place where no-thing will connect you to every-thing. It doesn t matter if you re a beginner or someone experienced all are welcome! If you d like more information, feel free to call Mike C. in Mason - Cell phone (517) The location is the St. Augustine s Episcopal Church, 546 West South Street, Mason, MI. For an updated meeting list and other information visit aalansingmi.org

The strength of our whole AA service structure starts with the group and with the GSR the group elects. I cannot emphasize too strongly the GSR s importance. Bill W. Since 1953, individual AA groups have been selecting a member to act as group contact to the whole of AA. This general service representative (GSR) is charged with the responsibility of bringing information from Central AA back to the group and communicating the group s ideas, opinions and activities to Central AA. Serving as your group s GSR is an opportunity to get involved in meaningful service work. Find out if your group has a GSR!

Meeting on March 28! In March of 2000, a small group of alcoholics started an open A.A. meeting at the Alano Club East that catered to younger people. They decided to meet at 9:30 p.m. on Friday nights in order to give young potential or actual alcoholics something positive to do. Since then, the group has moved to Eastminster Church in East Lansing. The group picks a topic from the Big Book every week, and every month they celebrate their members sobriety anniversaries. Everyone, regardless of age, is invited to attend the meeting on any Friday. The last Friday of the month of March we will celebrate the 15 years of Young Survivors! Lansing Central Office: 1915 E.
