Did your ancestors settle many decades or a possibly over a century ago in what is now Jasper Texas? Are you from one of the many towns and rural communities that make up Jasper County? Or did you come to this community in the recent past. Regardless there are questions we are sure your have about the community you come from or this community you now call home. On Saturday Feb 25 th in celebration of Black History month, Herman Wright Jr. and The Jasper County History Museum will conduct a two hour workshop to help you start the process of creating the history of your community. The workshop will be from 10 am to 12pm. There will be a Q&A luncheon afterwards. We will help you start the process of creating the history of your community. We will support organizing your ongoing research into your community so your children and grand children will be able to tell your story to the generations beyond the 21 st century. We honor Black History Month by utilizing research on the African American Springhill Cemetery in Magnolia Springs Texas. This learning experience is open to all. If you would like to trace your family history through multiple generations this workshop will help you with your investigation and provide clues to your story that will be invaluable to your future generations. While we focus on the African American experience in this workshop we are mindful that this community s experience can t be told without the accompanying stories from all communities. So this invitation is to everyone. If your ancestral memories include a cemetery, a church, a school house or land ownership you have all you will need to take advantage of this workshop. Our goal is to help you preserve your community s history. We are expecting a significant crowd and space at the Museum is limited so sign up early. We are asking for a voluntary $15 dollar donation to help The Long Black Line.Org and The Jasper County History Museum defray expenses of the event and material you will receive.. Presenting at the workshop is Dr Perky Beisel of Stephen F Austin State University. Dr Beisel s expertise is on cemetery markers. We will announce soon our speaker on Church History. Herman Wright Jr. of The Long Black Line.Org will speak on The Rosenwald Schools and the rural school building movement in Texas in the early 20 th century. David Luther the Chief Appraiser of Jasper County will speak about land deeds and land preservation. Walter Diggles, the Executive Director, Deep East Texas Council of Governments will speak on the role of churches in these historical communities. Lunch will be served at 12pm and a Q&A session will feature our speakers for your in depth inquiries. For those interested, from 1pm to 3:30pm we will travel to a Rosenwald School and to Springhill Cemetery to reinforce the skills we have learned at the workshop by experiencing this living history.
