3 Grant Joiner, Client Executive, Marsh & McLennan Companies NEXUS Protégé: Classes of 2010 Q: When and Why did you participate in NEXUS? A: My decision to participate in the NEXUS 2010 class as a protégé was two-fold: 1. Obtain guidance and gain wisdom from an experienced mentor 2. Build a lasting network of young community-minded leaders. I am blessed to have had mentors throughout each stage of my life-from athletics coaches in high school to academic leaders in college. Having just completed business school, I was at a crossroads professionally, and was seeking unbiased guidance. For this reason the mentor-protégé component attracted me to the program. Q: What did you learn from your NEXUS experience? A: I gained perspective from my peers and a deeper affection for our city. The diversity among protégés, in respect to gender, race, socioeconomic background, geographic upbringing, and skill set, instilled greater perspective that I have applied to my personal and professional life. My mentor coupled leadership in the workplace with servant leadership in the household by shepherding me through the first-time home buying experience. I gained a deeper appreciation of our city by understanding and embracing it s history and focusing on the unique assets that will enable Memphis to reach its economic potential. Q: Now that NEXUS is in it s 10th year, what is something that you as a Board member would like to see for NEXUS in the future? A: 1. Gain more corporate support 2. Engage more past NEXUS mentors and protégés for support 3. Position NEXUS as an integral part of corporate management curriculum for all Memphis companies 4. Replicate the NEXUS program in nearby cities in which there is a need WAYS TO BE A PART OF THE NEXUS NETWORK Our desire is for you, our alumni, to continue to be a part of the NEXUS network and stay connected. In May, we will graduate the ninth NEXUS class and will have more than 600 principle-centered leaders in our community. ATTEND special events & future NEXUS speaker sessions
4 Be a NEXUS VOLUNTEER with our Program Committee, Recruitment Committee, and Special Events, etc. Be a NEXUS DONOR & help provide opportunities for future leaders -Be an Annual Donor at a giving level that is tailored for you -Join the NEXUSNINETY Campaign, a donor initiative tailored to the protégé alumni who commit $10 per month. You may make a donation or sign up to join NEXUSNINETY online at or send a donation to NEXUS, 4055 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN STAY CONNECTED through social outlets, 90 Seconds of NEXUS and the NEXUS newsletter CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF NEXUS As NEXUS is now within it s 10th year, please tell us what you would like to see happen over the next 10 years? nexus@2pc.org with your ideas. MENTORING AWARDS PRESENTED BY NEXUS AT ANNUAL LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON NEXUS recently hosted the Fourth Annual Leadership Luncheon on January 29 with Bill Courtney, Inspiring Coach, Entrepreneur Star of Academy Award-winning documentary "UNDEFEATED" based on the Manassas High School Football Team. Those in attendance were impacted and challenged by his speech and personal experiences. Congratulations to the 2013 Mentoring Awards recipients voted on by the NEXUS alumni. Outstanding Mentoring Organization/Non-Profit: Girls, Inc. Outstanding Male Mentor: Renardo Baker, Memphis Leadership Foundation Outstanding Female Mentor: Kimberly Grantham, Junior League of Memphis Outstanding NEXUS Mentors: Sally Pace, FTN Financial & Junior League of Memphis & Jonathan Watkins, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare The event offered a special opportunity for community leaders, NEXUS alumni and current participants to learn more about NEXUS and mentoring. The future of NEXUS is bright as we continue to
5 have established, well-respected leaders in the Memphis community who are pleased to mentor our emerging leaders. If you are interested in becoming involved with NEXUS as a mentor, volunteer or donor, please contact NEXUS for more information. NEXUS MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY This is the second year NEXUS Mentors and Protégés have volunteered in the community with service projects as part of the NEXUS curriculum. The Class of 2013 nominated and voted on the three areas of service: a family dinner night at the Ronald Mc Donald House, creating a pathway through the woods for summer camps at For the Kingdom with students from the Peer Power Foundation, and partnering with New Memphis Institute's Fellows Day of Service on April 27. Thus far, the projects have been a success and the NEXUS Mentors and Protégés are learning more about ways to give back and impacting the Memphis community.
