3 Business SG101 Higher Certificate 6 Higher Certificate in Business This course is a two year flexible full-time course which offers the candidate a qualificati in general business, with a general understanding of how business ganisatis wk in the public and private sect. This will ideally positi you to enter the wkfce ctinue your studies. The student is introduced to the ce functis of business management such as accounting, management, marketing, entrepreneurship, human resource management, infmati technology and SME (small and medium enterprise) development. There are a wide range of in-class practical based exercises. Theetical knowledge and practical skills are acquired through individual and group projects, delivered through a combinati of lectures, tutials, PBL (Problem Based Learning), computer labaty sessis. This well-established course is a stepping ste f many students entering the business wld. Some of the graduates have become key managers in the manufacturing and retail sects and in public service. Some graduates have established highly successful businesses and others have ctinued to further studies. There are many entry opptunities in business in the retail, service, manufacturing, and public sect. Graduates of this course will be trained f any number of roles. 5 Business Code: SG181 Hours 8 Bachel of Business (Hs) This programme aims to provide graduates with advanced skills and in-depth knowledge of ce business disciplines. This e year degree provides learners with an opptunity to develop their intellectual abilities in pursuing a relevant and rigous academic course in their chosen field. The modules you will study are designed to prepare you f the challenging wld of business and to maximise your skill base, making you an attractive prospect to employers throughout all sects of the business wld. The course is divided into seven streams general business, marketing, human resource management, tourism, finance, financial services, spt and wellness. This enriching educatial experience aims to develop critical thinking and the ability to respd to changing social, cultural and ecomic fces in a wide range of business envirments. Demstrate interpersal skills of effective listening, negotiati, persuasi and presentati. Ability to analyse business envirments and to prepare optis and scenarios to aid decisi making in a business ctext. Mastery of specialised business skills in your chosen specialism. Ability to write, present and defend material that articulates ideas, insights and analysis using a variety of business media. Ability to exercise judgment, to facilitate infmed decisis complex management, technical and functial areas relating to ganisati, products, processes and services. On completi of the Bachel of Business (Hs) you may wish to ctinue your academic career by pursuing research at masters degree level in a business discipline. Some students may also wish to gain a qualificati f secdary school teaching in business, which currently has approval of the Teaching Council of Ireland. The financial stream of this course gives exemptis over and above those obtained from an dinary degree in business (level 7), from three of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants Examinatis and some examinatis set by The Associati of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Holders of an hours degree (2.2 higher) are eligible to enter the e year taught MSc in Marketing, provided they have three marketing modules equivalent at undergraduate level. Many of our graduates gain employment in the areas of marketing, human resource management, insurance, banking and general management. Previous graduates have also progressed to graduate courses offered by large multinatial ganisatis in Ireland and abroad. You will have an in-depth understanding of the business envirment which will make you an attractive asset f any business. Entry Requirements: The minimum entry requirement is a pass grade at dinary degree level (level 7). However, it should be noted that, given the limitati of number of places, the actual entry standard may be significantly higher than a pass mark. 6 Business SG139 Ordinary 7 BB in Financial Services This course equips you f employment in a growing and significant sect of the Irish ecomy, encompassing; banking, finance, insurance, building society operatis, fund management, financial advice, cpate finance and treasury operatis, in iti to marketing and infmati systems. You will gain a broad-based knowledge in all aspects of the industry and an understanding of the theetical ccepts and framewks used internatially. This course will prepare you f the financial envirment and equip you with the interpersal skills necessary f different roles in the rapidly changing financial services industry. You will develop skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluati. This course is current, with coverage of ctempary issues of regulati and global financial crises, and tries to anticipate future trends and developments. By the end of the course, you will be able to understand and evaluate the facts shaping financial services, both in Ireland and internatially. This course is highly challenging but also rewarding in every sense. The financial services sect is a maj employer and ctribut to the Irish ecomy. This course will enable the student to gain a wider understanding of finance to prepare them f the wld of wk. 7 Business SG536 Ordinary 7 Bachel of Business The aim of this programme is to produce graduates with a blend of business-related knowledge and skills and general business competencies. Graduates with this broad based business qualificati will be capable of making a positive ctributi to the business activities of any ganisati, whether in the public, private not f profit sect. This degree will positi the student f jobs at graduate entry level in business to ctinue with further studies in a broad range of business disciplines. Students will study a wide range of subjects. The graduate will be able to demstrate a detailed knowledge of the ccepts and theies across the main functial areas of business management. The student will be introduced to the ce functis of business including accounting, management, marketing, human resource management, infmati technology, enterprise, law and ecomics, in iti to a broad base of elective subjects. Throughout the programme students will be given a foundati in theetical principles in iti to involvement in a wide range of in-class practical exercises. Individual and group projects fm an integral part of the programme. Guest speakers will provide students with an understanding of the practice of the various disciplines in ganisatial settings. Operatial activities: Knowledge of how the dayto-day running of a business can be undertaken to ensure minimal disrupti and maximum success. Marketing: The ability to apply marketing techniques to ctribute to the marketing strategy of any ganisati, from market research to product design and from promotis to sales. 8 Business SG141 Hours 8 Bachel of Business (Hs) Today s business envirment is very dynamic and challenging and this course is designed to ensure that you have the capabilities, cfidence and skills to enable you to competently hold positis in human resource management, financial services and marketing fields when you graduate. It is no lger enough to provide goods and services to the market; businesses today must ensure they provide top class customer service, wk within an increasingly regulated envirment and within a socially respsible framewk. This course will enable you to meet these challenges head. An attractive feature of this course is a five-mth wk placement in the third year (April August). The wk placement gives you the opptunity to experience the wld of business and allows you to develop practical skills that you will be able to use in your future career. This programme has an exit/ embedded award after two years. It has also been recently revamped. The college uses Moodle, an line netwk where lecturers can post notes and can also be accessed from outside the college. There is plenty of choice also f eating and activities with several cafes, canteen, gym, running track etc. Accommodati: I lived at home while attending IT Sligo but from talking to and visiting fellow students there was plenty of choice when it came to accommodati, from living beside the college to living in the city centre. The accommodati is well priced and of a great standard. Advice to 1st years: D t be afraid to ask your lecturers f any help you may need! Join as many clubs and societies and meet as many new people as you can. And d t fget to enjoy it and the Sligo nightlife! About IT Sligo Why did you choose your course? Wking with figures was always a passi of mine in school and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in that area. I enjoyed accountancy as a subject and I thought it was the best route to take. What do you think of the course? I really enjoyed the course. I found there was a good balance between they and practical and was lucky to have such good lecturers they were always willing to help whenever needed. What was it that attracted you to IT Sligo? IT Sligo is ly a 10 minute drive f me so it was very cvenient. It allowed to me to study at a high standard whilst being able to still live at home to be near my family and friends. Through wd of mouth I heard that the courses were well balanced and that the facilities at IT Sligo were of a very high standard. What do you think of IT Sligo? IT Sligo is a great service to have at our fingertips (so close to home). It was the place where I met many good friends who also travelled to study there, showing that it is held in high regard. The lecturers are all very professial and helpful, with good facilities like several café areas, the gym, the library and the main canteen. Mayo About IT Sligo I would really like to specialise in this area i.e. telecommunicatis, fensics, server administrati security. I particularly enjoy the practical labs as it s really hands and you feel like you are really participating in building and cfiguring different netwks. It challenges you to think creatively to troubleshoot the different problems that arise. What do you think of IT Sligo? I think IT Sligo is a terrific college. It doesn t feel so big that you feel lost isolated. It has great facilities and the staff are very professial and helpful. Frequently, when we have run into problems an assignment at home during the weekend/ holidays, we have ed our lecturers and they will always respd and do their best to point us in the right directi. The lecturers take a persal interest in both the students educati and welfare. Advice to 1st years: Enjoy college life and have fun; it is a new and exciting chapter of your life. But remember you have come to college to get your qualificati. Go to all your lectures and wk your ctinuous assessment it takes so much pressure off f the final exams. If you re falling behind feel lost ask f help, chances are somee else in your class feels the same. Your lecturers are there to help you. It challenges you to think creatively Why did you choose your course? I went to see a Career Guidance Counsell specialising in career and educati optis f adults. I wanted to be 100% sure that the course I chose was right f me. I couldn t affd to drop out if I didn t like the course. Initially, I had selected Social Studies, but after a lengthy csultati I was given recommendatis and e included a computing course. I researched and csidered it thoughly, and realised it was definitely an area that appealed to me. I ve always had a fascinati with computing from an early age and was intrigued by their design and compositi. This was definitely the crect course choice f me. What was it that attracted you to IT Sligo? The maj fact in choosing IT Sligo was that first year is a comm year f 3 different courses. It s very difficult to choose which area of IT you would like to specialise in, without trying the subjects. The comm year turned out to be really wthwhile because, initially at the start of first year I wanted to do Computer Programming but up completi of first year I realised my real interest lay in Computer Systems and Netwking.
