1 School of Computing and Information Systems Master of Information Technology and Systems UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA
2 master of Information Technology and systems The Master of Information Technology and Systems (MITS) provides a wide breadth of knowledge of varying aspects of information technology (IT) and information systems (IS). The MITS provides students who have a previous tertiary qualification in any discipline area with the knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to deal effectively with advanced issues involving IT and IS. The MITS provides non-ict students with broad knowledge and understanding of fundamental information and communication technology concepts and principles. It also enables all students to select significant areas for in-depth study, from a range of advanced IT and IS areas, to provide them with knowledge, understanding and experiences that transcend technologies and are robust over time so that students are well-placed to deal with ongoing, rapid changes in the IT and IS fields. Studies in the various advanced areas of information and communication technology (ICT) allow students to develop a professional, responsible, self-reflective and critical attitude to the practice of ICT. Managing school Degree title Abbreviated title Degree code School of Computing and Information Systems Master of Information Technology and Systems MITS K71 CRICOS course code M Entry condition Standard duration A 3-year bachelor degree (or equivalent to AQF 7) 1.5 years minimum (must have ICT bachelor degree), 4 years maximum Contact details Freecall: [email protected] Web: What skills and knowledge will I gain through studying the MITS? You will acquire attitudes needed by an ICT professional to: be an effective team member; take initiative and work independently; communicate effectively at a professional level; continue lifelong learning; and adhere to codes of professional conduct and practice. The MITS provides an optional opportunity for high achieving students to qualify for higher research degree entry (e.g. PhD). Students who perform well in academic units can optionally undertake research methods training and a research project leading to a minor thesis in ICT. If you undertake the research project you will be an ICT professional with the additional abilities and skills to: select, adapt and effectively apply research processes, methodologies, tools and techniques to plan, conduct and manage an independent ICT-related research project; critically analyse research literature to conduct a literature review; be aware of the social consequences of ICT-related research and respond appropriately to ethical considerations and act in accordance with best practice and industry standards; analyse, synthesise and evaluate factors to answer a research question and to defend a research approach; and document and communicate effectively the research techniques used and the results of the research both orally and in a written thesis. 3 Where will the MITS take me? You ll be amazed where ICT skills can take you! ICT is a truly global career working in ICT can take you around the world, and no matter what area you want to work in, studying ICT will help you achieve it. Studying ICT is the start to a rewarding, interesting and social career anywhere in the world. ICT skills play an increasingly vital role in almost all occupations and contribute to productivity gains, innovation and job growth across all Australian industries. In order to meet expected continued industry growth over the next few years, industry is seeking professionals with skills in all areas of ICT. The MITS is an effective means of opening up new career possibilities for you in a broad range of ICT-related and non- ICT-related industries. The MITS will provide you with the knowledge and skills to solve complex social, economic and technical problems within the context of ICT. For students without prior ICT studies, the MITS provides you with fundamental skills in systems analysis and design; programming; cyber-security; web technology; database technology; data communications and networking technology. By selecting the specialist subjects, you will develop deep theoretical and practical knowledge in specific areas in several advanced ICT areas such as intelligent web services; information management; enterprise systems; elogistics; systems strategy and management; business process innovation; network security and data management technology. You will then have the intellectual and conceptual foundation to play a leading role in the development of the ICT industry both locally and overseas. You will then enjoy the opportunity to pursue varied and rewarding careers around the world. For example: systems analyst; web developer; database modeller/administrator; programmer; business process modeller; ICT strategist; project manager; information management specialist; security architect/specialist; business analyst; enterprise architect. How is the degree structured? In the MITS you will do the equivalent of at least twelve 12.5% units or sixteen 12.5% units. There are some units that are weighted at 25%, so these are the equivalent of two 12.5% units. If you do not have a bachelor or graduate certificate/diploma (or equivalent) in an ICT-related area you will be required to complete a 16-unit masters, which includes the additional four level 500 units (KIT501, KIT502, KIT503, KIT506). You will need to satisfactorily complete the equivalent of at least eight ICT 12.5% units at level 700. The remaining units must be taken from level 400, 500, 600 or 700. You are allowed to complete up to four postgraduate units from any other discipline (e.g. Business or Science). On completion of four ICT postgraduate (level 400 or 700 only) units the candidates can choose a research or coursework stream. To be admitted to the research stream students need a DN average over four ICT level 400 or 700 units. I n the coursework stream your remaining units are coursework units. You must do ICT Research Principles 12.5% unit (KIT714) and Multi-perspective ICT Project 12.5% unit (KIT713). In the research stream you do a couple more coursework 12.5% units and ICT Research Methods 25% (KIT701), and a research dissertation over two 25% units (KIT702, KIT703). Does the ACS recognise the MITS? The MITS has been developed in consultation with the Australian Computer Society (ACS), and professional level accreditation will be sought after there have been some graduates. It is anticipated that graduates of the MITS will be eligible for full membership of the ACS. How long will it take to graduate? The MITS will take a minimum of one and half years full-time study, if the student has an ICT-related bachelor degree. The degree can be studied part-time over a maximum period of four years. How will the units be taught? The teaching pattern for each unit you study will be different. All units will involve some face-to-face classes in the form of lectures, workshops, tutorials or laboratories. Some units will deliver content via packaged online learning modules followed by interactive face-to-face classes. Teamwork and problembased learning will be a focus for many units. What is my weekly commitment? The contact hours for each unit will vary. There can be up to six hours of face-to-face classes a week. It is recommended that you be prepared to dedicate 10 hours per week on average to each unit no matter what the teaching pattern for the unit. This will ensure that you have sufficient time to complete all the necessary classes, self-study and assessment tasks. Most of the units involve tutorials or laboratory classes. Each class can only accommodate approximately students, so the class is repeated many times throughout the week and you will be able to choose which class time to attend. Review the university timetable to identify when your classes are available: student.admin.utas.edu.au/coursesenrolment/timetable Where can I study the MITS? The MITS is available at the Sandy Bay campus in Hobart. Some units will use flexible delivery strategies including packaged online learning modules or recorded lectures allowing students to complete some learning off campus.

In 2015, students will have access to a state-of-the-art server administration lab, which will allow students to fully experience the practical aspects of being a systems administrator. If you undertake a research dissertation then you will be supplied with a personal study area (desk) and a computer for the duration of the dissertation units. Am I eligible? Admission to the MITS at UTAS requires qualifications equivalent to a bachelor degree (three- or four-year degree) from an accredited tertiary institution. International Students The English language requirements will be those established for most UTAS undergraduate programs, as shown on How do I apply? If you would like to find out more information about the MITS, contact the School. Freecall: [email protected] Web: The staff can assist you by phone or , or you may prefer to make an appointment for a face-to-face discussion. The MITS is a full-fee paying course and information on current course fees can be found at When you have decided to enrol, you can complete an application online at UTAS reserves the right to limit enrolments in high demand units and courses, so act early to avoid disappointment. You should allow between 30 and 60 minutes to complete the application, and it is recommended that you have any dates and documents of previous study to hand. Offers of places in the MITS are made via and mail. When you receive an offer, it will outline how to accept the offer and what happens next. Motohiro fujiura Digital Development Coordinator Graduated: 2003 Employer: Tourism Tasmania Location: Hobart I am responsible for Tasmanian tourism product database systems and distribution of data through digital channels. My tasks include coordination of application development projects with developers as required and management of some CMS (Content Management System) as well. I am also a regular member of technology meetings where technology partners and representatives of Tourism Australia and tourism organisations of all states and territories discuss issues and exchange ideas to maximise market reach through digital media. I enjoy working in this field because the IT language makes me feel equal to others with my English as a second language. Having said that, I am often required to explain technically complicated matters in simple English for the non-technical and/or management levels. It is sometimes challenging but rewarding. Looking back now it was quite stressful at times for me being a mature age student with two small children when I enrolled. However, I made good friends and we helped each other to get through the course. The biggest thing I learned then was that I was such a lucky person to have great support from family and friends. I am very thankful to the teachers and tutors at university for their friendly and approachable manner. From an academic point of view, I learned the foundation of knowledge and a logical way of thinking that helps me to keep adopting new technology that is continuously arising. Also I learned organisational and communication skills that help me in a diverse environment.
6 POSTGRADUATE COURSE GUIDE Australia Tasmania, the greatest place to study Burnie Launceston Hobart Tasmania Tasmania, the island state of Australia, lies 40 degrees south of the equator. An archipelago of 334 islands in the temperate zone of the southern hemisphere, it is a land of dramatic coastlines, rugged mountains, spectacular wilderness and sparkling highland lakes. Tasmanians breathe some of the world s cleanest air and drink the purest water. Unpolluted coastal seas and rich, fertile soils enable them to produce the finest foods. Tasmania is an island of difference. Its people are resourceful; applying the kind of creativity that arises from its geographical position to their business activities, scientific research and artistic endeavours.
