1 A Course of Study f OFFICE TECHNOLOGY (AS) Associate Degree, Certificate of Achievement & Department Certificate Programs (fmerly Office Infmation Systems) Office wkers are responsible f a variety of administrative and clerical duties necessary to run and maintain ganizations efficiently. They use a variety of software, produce crespondence, maintain databases, manage projects, as well as ganize meetings, manage recds, and schedule appointments. Office wkers find employment in a variety of settings, such as cpations, government agencies, schools, and hospitals. Some related job titles include office assistant, administrative assistant, executive assistant, and data entry/clerical. F additional career possibilities, visit the Career Services Center on the main campus to utilize computerized career infmation systems and other valuable career resources. ASSOCIATE DEGREE - 60 UNITS The suggested program assumes no previous instruction in Office Technology courses. Beginning classes may be waived if students have sufficient skills to be eligible f the advanced courses. The Associate degree involves satisfacty completion of a minimum of 60 semester units with a C average higher including the required units in the area of emphasis (articulated below), fulfillment of the Global Citizenship requirement, and fulfillment of all Santa Monica College general education requirements, CSU GE IGETC. Catalog rights dictate that a student may satisfy the requirements of a degree certificate by completing the general education and maj/area of emphasis requirements in effect at any time of their continuous enrollment. Continuous enrollment is defined as enrollment in consecutive Fall and Spring semesters until completion. At least 50% of the area of emphasis (maj) units must be completed at Santa Monica College. Each course in the area of emphasis (maj) must be completed with a grade of C higher.
2 GENERAL OFFICE (30-32 units) The General Office Certificate program provides training in common skills used in the business office - keyboarding, computer applications, English, accounting, and business communications. General office wkers obtain employment in many environments: cpate settings, government, schools, and hospitals. Related job titles include administrative assistant, executive assistant, executive secretary, office assistant, and secretary. After gaining some wk experience specialized skills, many wkers transfer to jobs with higher pay greater advancement potential. Students may qualify f an Associate degree in this maj. Program Learning Outcomes: Using skills in Microsoft Office software, keyboarding, and English language principles, the student will create and revise commonly used business documents. Given transaction data, the student will perfm basic bookkeeping/accounting tasks, such as classifying, recding, and preparing financial documents. 3 LEGAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT (30 units) Legal administrative assistants perfm the administrative tasks in a law office, such as answering the telephone, managing files, preparing law office crespondence and legal documents, and maintaining the calendar. Legal administrative assistants are in great demand. Qualified legal administrative assistants who have strong skills can find lucrative opptunities with law firms and cpate legal departments, government agencies, and a variety of business and industries -- such as banks, insurance companies, investment firms, and real estate companies. This certificate program prepares students to pursue employment as a legal administrative assistant. Training is provided in legal terminology, law office procedures, legal research, computer technology, machine transcription document preparation, keyboarding, and written and verbal communications. Program Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this program, using transcription equipment, wd processing software, and legal terminology skills, students will prepare legal documents that represent crect fmat, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and number usage. Applying knowledge of law office procedures, students will demonstrate skills in wkplace telecommunications, office and court calendaring, billing procedures, and filing systems. Students develop skills and knowledge to perfm a variety of duties to aid in the efficient wkflow and operations of a medical related facility. Coursewk includes medical terminology, computer technology, medical law and ethics, and front office tasks such as patient scheduling, reception, coding and billing, transcription, and recds management. Program Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this program, using knowledge of front office tasks, students will use appropriate procedures related to reception, telephone communications, and recds management. Applying computer technology skills, medical terminology skills, and language skills, students will prepare crespondence, produce medical transcripts, and perfm tasks related to patient coding and billing. 5 MEDICAL CODING AND BILLING SPECIALIST (36-37 units) Medical Coding and Billing Specialist are primarily responsible f submitting documentation of patient medical care to insurance companies. Duties include billing insurance companies and patients; collecting payment f services; and documenting tests, treatments, and procedures, using crect medical terminology referred to as coding. The Medical Billing/Coding Certificate program provides the training that is required to perfm these duties. Employment outlook f medical billing/coding wkers is expected to grow much faster than the average f all occupations through 2018 due to rapid growth in the number of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that will be increasing scrutinized by third-party payers, regulats, courts, and consumers. Program Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this program, applying knowledge of diagnostic and procedural codes, students will review patient s medical recds and assign appropriate codes f reimbursement and billing purposes. Using a computerized patient billing system, students will enter patient and case infmation, process transactions and claims, create statements, and produce repts. Duties include inputting data into computers and perfming editing, proofreading, and clerical tasks. This certificate program provides training in the essential skills to carry out these tasks. Job opptunities exist in part-time, full-time, and wk-at-home positions. Data entry wkers are known by various job titles, such as data entry clerk, data entry operat, data entry specialist, and clerk. Data entry jobs frequently serve as stepping stones to higher paying positions with increased responsibilities. This certificate prepares students f entry-level recds management/receptionists positions in hospitals, nursing homes, physician offices, and service agencies. Coursewk includes training in sting, retrieving, and maintaining medical recds; front desk procedures; medical vocabulary; computer technology; keyboarding; and written and verbal communications. 8 MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION (15 units) The Medical transcription certificate program prepares students to listen to dictated recdings made by physicians and other healthcare professionals and transcribe them into medical repts, crespondences, and other administrative material. Medical transcription is a particularly flexible career that easily lends itself to many different wk styles. Medical transcriptionists wk in hospitals, physicians offices, transcription service offices, clinics, labaties, and at home.
