5 3. Programme Description 3.1 Overview In studying BA (Hons) International Business at Lincoln Business School, students explore a range of business disciplines that will enable them to understand and identify the needs of business operating in a global context. The programme is made up of four main streams of academic thought: Economics, Finance, and Marketing. Level 1 provides a foundation for these streams of academic thought. Moving on from this, in the final year students specialise in a range of international business subjects that have a strong focus on international trade and related issues. Students also have the opportunity to study a modern foreign language if they choose at all levels. The programme is designed to prepare students for a career in international business and to increase their geographical mobility. There is opportunity to study or work abroad as part of this programme, in locations such as North America, China, France, Spain, Germany, Finland and Sweden. Study placements take place in the second half of Level 2. Students wishing to undertake a work placement will do this in the year between Level 2 and Level 3. The placement experience offers a unique opportunity for students to gain an international perspective of practical business and study that complements their course at Lincoln Business School. The programme team recognises the importance of enhancing employment opportunities for our students and continues to develop employability enhancing resources and programmes. The Faculty also has an Employment Engagement Manager and a Placement Coordinator. There are many opportunities for students to participate in a range of employment enhancing initiatives. The Lincoln Award, for example, arranges mock interviews for students, as well as making use of guest speakers. There are also centrally organised workshops via and a Faculty Business mentoring programme. In addition the PDP programme with small groups of students and the Personal Tutor / Academic Year Tutor system all seek to promote graduate employability. The programme incorporates contemporary approaches to pedagogic practice by incorporating the Student as Producer philosophy into its teaching and learning. Students will acquire personal, transferrable skills in an environment which supports independent learning and encourages personal development, which is extremely attractive to future employers. For example, in the module Critical HRM: Managing Diversity, the students work as researchers, producing and sharing knowledge on a research topic such as ethnicity or gender. Students work within a research environment of peer support and look for ways to creatively exhibit their research work. In the module Organisational Behaviour 1: Perspectives of (OB1), students are required to form a group and are set a problem-solving activity on the student experience and integration and are required to organise an activity of their own choosing. The International Business programme also requires students to undertake Personal Development Planning (PDP). Students engage in individual research for all aspects of the formative assessment for PDP, initially by researching for an essay that is relevant to their degree discipline and determining the skills and abilities that are required for their future career, then later in the semester by reflecting on their own skills and personal development for an individual presentation. Another example of Student as Producer is found in Organisational Behaviour 2: in Context (OB2) where students are required to prepare a Learning Resource: the brief is that it is "by students, for students" and must be something that would help other students or potential students. The Learning Resource may take any format, but must be tangible, substantial, sufficient and adequate and may be a handbook, a CD-rom, a video/dvd, a website, a game, or any other suitable means of presenting information for students/potential students. This assessment has provided a Page 5/44
6 number of excellent materials, some of which will be able to be used at Open Days. International students will benefit from the support and services offered by the International Office in terms of meeting students on arrival, themed events and so on. The Welcome Week will focus in particular on the needs of international students and ongoing support will be provided via student representatives, the Student Union and personal tutors, as well as support via participation in the Peer Programme for Global Graduates launched in , where UK students and international students work together, to support one another in the pursuit of global graduate identity. Modes of teaching, learning and assessment will vary within modules and across programmes. All Level 1 students will engage in the Personal Development Planning (PDP) process and will be supported by their respective personal tutor / academic year tutor for academic guidance and advice. International students will also be supported via the English Language Centre at the University. The Centre specialises in offering support to students in terms of their learning experiences and assessments. Additional support for assessment will be made available via workshops organised by the Academic Librarians Academic staff in the Business School have proven experience of dealing successfully with the challenges of international students studying abroad. BA (Hons) International Business responds to the United Kingdom QAA benchmark statements for the Undergraduate Awards in Business and.
