1 Australia Pacific Job title: Senior Investigator Job Grade: 6 Salary: $76, p/a + superannuation Reports to: Research and Investigations Coordinator Line manages: No line management responsibilities Overall purpose of the job The Senior Investigator will forward Greenpeace s campaigns by undertaking innovative and timely investigations resulting in stories that inform and shape public debate. They will utilise a range of media platforms and reporting techniques to ensure maximum impact. The Senior Investigator will be a cutting edge investigative journalist who is adept at sifting through complex data for stories and building relationships with sources. They will be confident in their ability to lead and deliver high impact investigations that further Greenpeace s campaigns. Scope Investigations and research are the bedrock of Greenpeace s work. Fully understanding the nature of environmental threats, and exposing the issues behind them is foundational to all Greenpeace campaigns. The Senior Investigator is a member of Greenpeace Australia Pacific s Program Department and reports to the Research and Investigations Coordinator. Main responsibilities Project-based work Manage investigations as directed by the Research and Investigations Coordinator Work closely with project teams and the Research and Investigations Coordinator to identify potential investigative opportunities on specific campaigns Work with project teams and other Greenpeace regional offices to collaborate and deliver on investigative ideas
2 Assist with the analysis and evaluation of projects that have an investigative element Take full responsibility for the completion of delegated tasks Supervise external consultants, volunteers and/or staff from other parts of Greenpeace when delegated to do so as part of a project team or project delivery Take responsibility for specific delegated budgets as directed. Investigations management Initiate, develop and deliver investigations that fulfil campaign or organisational objectives or both Write multi-platform material at a standard suitable for publication on Greenpeace platforms based on the outcome of investigations and be able to produce, commission or advise on the production of shareable, interactive and visual materials for social media and other digital use including any infographics based on investigation findings Develop, manage and deliver investigations in a way that maximises campaign impact and furthers mobilisation, communications and fundraising objectives. Media relations Act as a representative of Greenpeace to external bodies/the media as appropriate Initiate, maintain and develop beneficial contacts with media organisations and individuals involved in investigations, particularly broadcasters (in consultation with Head of News and Narrative) Work with media or new media and production companies (in consultation with Head of News and Narrative) to co-produce investigative reports Tailor investigative output to news agendas to maximise impact. Collaboration Participate in investigations working groups and meetings as directed, to share experience, skills and creative ideas with other members of Greenpeace staff Be prepared to present plans, issues and evaluations to others for collective learning and input Work openly and co-operatively with other members of the Research and Investigations Team and project teams Providing support to other members as necessary Enable a learning environment by taking responsibility for sharing skills and assisting the development of other members of the Research and Investigations Team and project teams to help build the organisation s investigative skills and capacity. 3 Maintain an up to date knowledge and understanding of all Greenpeace issue areas Respond to challenges, explore new ideas and take initiative in all aspects of investigative work Undertake any other duties, appropriate to the post, as delegated by the Research and Investigations Coordinator. 4 Experience/proven ability working with production companies to develop and co-produce investigations with broadcasters and other media Project management skills with proven experience Awareness and understanding of social media outlets and ability to engage with them Ability to apply creativity in the identification and exploitation of investigative opportunities Excellent written and verbal communication skills Effective keyboard skills Experience of setting up and maintaining effective administrative systems and databases. Method related competencies Substantial and direct experience of developing and delivering investigations using undercover techniques and/or data analysis Ability to solve problems related to the work of the investigations team and/or project team Time management skills. Social competencies Ability to advise, support and share skills with other staff in carrying out investigations Significant demonstrable experience of working collaboratively within teams in developing and delivering investigations Ability to develop relationships with journalists and other key contacts Experience of communicating clearly and diplomatically in face to face meetings and in difficult circumstances. Leadership competencies Ability to work autonomously without supervision Self-motivated with a high level of initiative Ability to gain insight into one s own strengths and weaknesses and initiate actions to increase or improve one s knowledge, skills and competencies to work more effectively Ability to coordinate a team.
