We have been leading the fight against stroke for over 20 years. We influence and campaign to improve stroke care and support people to make the best possible recovery. We fund world-class research to develop new treatments and ways to prevent the devastation of stroke. Breakthroughs in treatment have halved the number of people dying from stroke in the UK but it is still the second biggest killer in the world. That is why we are involved in projects across the globe. Stroke is one of the greatest health challenges of our time with approximately one stroke happening every three and a half minutes in the UK. One in four strokes is fatal within the first year and it is the most common cause of complex adult disability. Over a third of the UK s 1.2 million stroke survivors are left dependent on others for everyday activities. The incidence of stroke is rising significantly among people of working age, and also affects more than 400 children each year. To realise a world where there are fewer strokes and all those touched by stroke get the help they need, we work with integrity, demonstrating our values as one combined passionate, innovative, respectful and professional team within the Stroke Association. Together we can conquer stroke. 1
2 Purpose of role Reporting to the Deputy Director of HR and Workforce Development, the HR Business Partner will support in the development and delivery of the HR and Workforce Development strategy and functional plans. The post holder will develop trusted relationships with colleagues across the Association in order to really understand the needs of the organisation so they can deliver credible HR support and advice to a range of stakeholders up to Director level. This role involves providing expert insight into business challenges as well as managing, advising and supporting on the full range of HR activities to progress delivery of our strategic ambitions. Key tasks of role 1. To be a credible HR subject matter expert. To maintain and continually develop a strong knowledge of employment law and HR best practice as it relates to all aspects of people management and the employment relationship. To ensure systems and processes are compliant. 2. To develop strong, pro-active partnerships with business leaders and line managers to be able to partner the business on the full range of both strategic and operational HR areas. 3. To support managers with all operational HR related issues including Resoucing, Employee Relations, Engagement, Talent Management, Performance Management, Change Management, TUPE and other relevant areas effectively considering organisational risk at all stages. Providing credible advice in line with Stroke Association policies and procedures, recommending development where relevant. 4. To lead on disciplinary, capability and grievance processes providing advice and guidance on process and providing appropriate HR input during informal and formal processes. 5. To manage and develop direct reports to achieve their potential to deliver our strategic ambitions. To support the HR team in providing advice and guidance to managers in an efficient and timely manner and developing functional processes to drive improvement. 6. To work with colleagues to review and develop HR polices. 2
3 7. To use management information and other sources of information pro-actively to provide accurate, up to date business intelligence that informs functional and business actions. 8. To deliver the pay and reward activities including the annual pay review using market comparisons and benchmarking data to support decisions. To develop a full understanding and Stroke Association s job evaluation policy and procedure so that appropriate advice and guidance can be provided to managers. To carry out supplementary benchmarking, research and job analysis in relevant market areas to support the Stroke Association s job evaluation process where required. 9. To work closely with managers in preparing PSG submissions and attending the meetings as required. 10. To seek out development opportunities for self and team that will benefit the Stroke Association. Other tasks and requirements 1. 4 Person specification Job Description: HR Business Partner /Desirable Education and training CIPD qualified (ideally MCIPD) or working towards Willingness to undertake training and Continuing Professional Development Experience Experience as a business partner or of developing strong HR/client partnerships within a strategic HR function Experience of pro-actively identifying issues of workforce development and people management and advising managers where they impact on business performance Experience in leading on recruitment, succession planning, talent management, engagement, performance management, complex ER cases, restructuring, TUPE, pay review, and other business-enhancing HR initiatives Experience of line managing a small HR team and operational HR experience of recruitment, absence management, job evaluation, developing and updating HR policies and procedures. Experience of working in a similar sized organisation in a Senior HR role. Abilities and competencies Works confidently with senior staff, influencing, coaching and constructively challenging any behaviours, policies or actions that may impact negatively on business performance or good people management practices Draws on a range of sources of intelligence to deliver insight and develop sound business cases with recommendations to support a proposed course of action Demonstrates critical analysis skills and use of management information, HR policy, knowledge of HR and good practice to build insight and develop individualised solutions 4
