2 The College for Kids Program Eligibility The Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency s College for Kids program is designed for highly motivated students who have completed fifth, sixth or seventh grade. Motivated students are those who enjoy learning and have a sense of curiosity. Motivated students need not always receive high grades in school, but neither do they present behavior or discipline problems for their teachers. Eligibility is determined by meeting ONE of the following criteria: Identified in a TAG program 75% or above on an ITBS score Recommended by a teacher, principal or parent Sites, Dates & Times Pleasant Valley High 15-19, 2015 (5-day session) 8:30-11:50 a.m. Pleasant Valley High 22-26, 2015 (5-day session) 8:30-11:50 a.m. (moved from Davenport North High) *Note: students who enroll in just one or two classes will be on campus for just one or two hours each morning. Students taking three classes are on campus from 8:30-11:50 a.m. Costs 5-day session Full-time - $ per student which entitles the student to three classes Part-time - $65.00 for one class $90.00 for two classes Transportation Parents are expected to organize or provide daily transportation for their children. Registration Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. A program registration form for each site is located at the Mississippi Bend AEA website under the Student Programs tab. Students are asked to rank their TOP SEVEN class selections. Every effort will be made to enroll students in high priority classes. Be sure to only register for classes offered at the campus you choose to attend. Class schedules will be ed to you three weeks prior to the start of your campus. Registrations will be accepted from February 18 - April 10 (registrations received after April 10th will only be accepted if space is available). Registrations received by April 10th will determine actual classes offered. Please help us by registering by April 10th so we can retain all classes. You may register by phone with a credit card by calling Jody at Class Fees Some classes have additional fees due to the high cost of materials needed for the class. If a class has a fee, it will be stated in the class description. DO NOT send class fees with your tuition. Payment of class fees will be required when the you receive the containing your class schedule three weeks prior to the start of your campus. Refunds/Drops If you cancel your registration, your tuition will be refunded minus a $35 processing fee. No refunds will be given two weeks (14 days) prior to program start date (no exceptions).

4 College for Kids Class Descriptions 2015 Week Title Description Ancient Egypt Calligraphy Cartooning Chemistry I Creative Writing CSI Death in Dallas: J.F. Kennedy Assassination Digital Photography Dissection I Take a trip back in time and experience life in Ancient Egypt. You ll learn to write in Hieroglyphics, create a Book of the Dead, and even build a pyramid you can eat! Have fun learning everything you need to Walk Like an Egyptian! Learn the art of beautiful writing as we explore different lettering styles. Learn to use borders and special techniques to enhance the writing. Several projects will be completed. ($5.00 fee) Cartooning with an emphasis on facial expressions and body structure. Students will create their very own cartoon story board using caricatures they design. Work in the chemistry laboratory daily, collect data, and observe and test various chemical reactions. Students of any grade level may enroll. ($5.00 fee) Seize the power of storytelling! Learn how to bring memorable characters to life, craft plot twists, and conquer the art of description in this creative writing workshop class. Students will participate in creativity growing exercises to banish writers block and sample various forms and style of writing during classroom workshops. By the end of the program students will have produced a chapbook to display their favorite written pieces. Students will be stepping into the role of crime scene investigator to learn scientific strategies and skills. Lab activities include collecting and analyzing evidence to solve mysteries. Just over 50 years has passed since President Kennedy made a campaign trip to Texas. Learn about the important events, persons, and specific locations related to that tragic weekend in November Photos, original and Reproductions of various newspapers, films, books, magazines, and displays are used to enhance the learning experience. Discussion is encouraged. Book and Information booklet provided for each student. Learn how to take quality digital photos and then edit the photos into Photoshop. Students will also learn how to enhance and create artwork from their photos by using Photoshop. (Students must bring a digital camera and a flash drive. It is recommended that the students bring the computer cable that goes with their camera). Explore the anatomy of living things using a hands-on approach. You will learn to use various tools including microscopes. Specimens may include simple animals like the earthworm, grasshopper, crayfish, and starfish. ($8.00 fee) Dissection II Draw Manga This course focuses on more advanced dissection techniques and the exploration of the anatomy of more complex animals. Specimens may include fish, frog, shark, and mudpuppy. Enrollment limited to students who have completed 7 th grade or previously taken Dissection I. ($13.00 fee) Students will learn the Japanese style of cartoon illustration. They will design, create, and draw characters of this style and create story lines for their character(s).

5 Week Title Description Drawing French Improv Intro to Journalism Journalistic Photography Students will enjoy drawing a variety of subjects in ink, scratchboard, pencil, and pastels. ($2.00 fee) Designed for the beginner, we will focus on conversational skills, play games, learn new vocabulary and study the culture. Mix one part Who s Line Is It Anyway? with two parts creative problem solving. Add a healthy dollop of Improv acting skills and mix well. What have you got? Destination Imagination Improv! Learn the basics of acting, prop building and thinking on your feet in this fun and hands-on class. Let the skits begin! In this class, we will be taking a look at all aspects of journalism, from photography, to interviewing, to writing, to production. Learn how a newspaper story goes from start to finish and how it is planned out on a page. This class is recommended for anyone with a slight interest in journalism! (Students must bring a Flash Drive to class). Explore the interesting hobby of photography through a new lens, a journalistic perspective! Explore how journalists select the best photograph for a story, incorporate it into a page design and how creative spreads are made. Students will have the opportunity to use what they learn in class to create their own photo spread design. (Students must bring a Flash Drive to class) Medieval Times Learn about what life was really like in medieval castles and villages. Students will learn about medieval daily life, chivalry, warfare, festivals, and crime and punishment. Students will also create a medieval alter-ego, participate in a knighting ceremony and get to sample authentic medieval foods. ($2.00 fee) Model Airplanes Mythology Pastel Portraits Sculpture (Modern) Sew Cool Spanish I Spanish 2 Splish-Splash Watercolor Students will build a model airplane using balsawood and blueprint layout. Students will be supplied with all materials which are theirs to keep. ($10.00 fee) Explore the legends, stories and myths of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the frozen North. Learn about heroes and monsters, and how to survive if you ever get caught in a fairy tale. Students will study facial values and details using pencil, soft chalk, and pastels. A self portrait and one other portrait will be completed on a 12 x 18 size paper. (Please bring a picture of yourself or a loved one.) ($5.00 fee) Combining wire and nylon will result in a dynamic sculptural form. Students will paint the form with lively acrylic colors and patterns. They will also model a small creature with Model Magic clay. ($4.00 fee) Make a cool pillow for your room. We will show you how with cool fabrics, fun patterns, and a sewing machine. No sewing experience necessary. ($5.00 fee) Hola! This class is designed for the beginner. Students will learn exciting new vocabulary, practice basic conversations and learn a little about the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. This class is a continuation of Spanish 1 or aimed at students who have had a little experience with Spanish. Students at this level will focus on more advanced culture and vocabulary, and conversations. Students will learn some interesting basic watercolor techniques in painting landscape, natural, and still-life subjects. ($5.00 fee)

Students from last year s class may register and do a more complex design. ($13.00 fee) Run a railroad. Build tall skyscrapers. Capture Villages. Defeat your enemies. Your strategy can save the world. A wealth of new games will be available for you to learn and play. Games range from fast two-player to multi-hour six-player experiences. May the best player win. Experience the latest fun technologies and interactive sites in this fun and exciting class! We will explore several different educational technologies from games to trivia to social media creation of different literary/famous characters. Students will design a t-shirt with a combination of batik (wax-resist) and tie-dye techniques. ($6.00 fee) Students will need to furnish a previously washed white t-shirt. This class will provide an interesting study of the greatest military conflict in world history. 75 years has passed since the Nazi invasion of Poland and WWII continues to fascinate people of all ages. Learn about Adolf Hitler, and the Nazi Party, important battles, weapons, strategies, secret missions and much more. Newspaper headlines, historic photographs, flags, posters and artifacts are used to enhance learning. Information booklet provided. Class participation is strongly encouraged. This course covers the basic facts of World War II but has an emphasis on detailed coverage of specific areas of the great conflict such as: The Nazi s & their Third Reich, the Holocaust and persecution of the Jews, the Secret War, D-Day plus much more. An information booklet provided includes vocabulary, bibliography and a film list. Class participation is strongly encouraged. **** World War II and WW II Advanced may be taken in the same session. When the zombies attack, where should you run, what will you need to survive, and how would you rebuild your life? These survival questions point out a dangerously overlooked fact: Geography skills can save you from an impending zombie apocalypse?
