2 FUN AND ENGAGING LESSONS ON ANCIENT EGYPT! All activities are classroom tested and include detailed handouts, templates, and rubrics! This package includes the following: Nile River Cube Project Students use provided handouts of information on the Nile River to create full color, informational, 3D cubes. Completed cubes can be hung from the classroom ceiling, or stacked to create a giant pyramid for classroom display! Template and Rubric included! Modern Day Tomb Collection Project Students learn about the things left behind in tombs by the Ancient Egyptians, and then create Modern Day Tomb Collections for themselves that include descriptions and illustrations of the things they think are most important. This excellent creative writing activity makes a beautiful hallway display, and is a great way to learn about your students and what they value! Rubric included! Ancient Egyptian Scrapbook Project use this as a final project for the unit! Students use knowledge gained in the unit to create a creative scrapbook of an imaginary journey to Ancient Egypt! Rubric included! Mummification Wheel Project Students read about the mummification process on included informational handouts, and create visual mummification wheels that outline the process. A fun and engaging way to learn about mummification! Rubric and Template included! Hieroglyphic Cartouche Pendant Project Students use shrink plastic and their knowledge of hieroglyphics to create beautiful pendants displaying their name in this Ancient Egyptian written form. A supply list is included. Students will also need a hieroglyphic translation sheet, which can be easily found for free on the internet.

3 A TRIP TO ANCIENT EGYPT: SCRAPBOOK CREATION You have hopped aboard a time machine and taken a trip back to Ancient Egypt. Using information you have learned about in class, you are required to create a scrapbook detailing your trip. REQUIREMENTS Pictures of at least 5 places you have visited These may be hand drawn, cut from magazines, photographs These must be full color!!! Information about the places you have visited Below each image, you must include a paragraph of information describing it Each paragraph must be free of spelling and grammar errors Diary entries detailing your trip You must include at least 5 entries Each entry must be a minimum of ½ a page long Each entry must be free of spelling and grammar errors Souvenirs from your trip You must include at least 5 items These should be small items, suitable for posting in a scrapbook PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER When you have completed the requirements, you must place the items in a scrapbook brought from home. You may want to place the items in a duotang that you have decorated, or you may wish to place the items in a scrapbook specifically designed for the purpose. It is up to you to decide how to best present your work. No scrapbook is complete without decoration! Feel free to use stickers, letter cutouts, markers, glitter, etc. to give your scrapbook a special touch. Just be sure to keep it Egypt themed! This project will be due on. It will be marked out of 115, according to the attached rubric.

5 NILE RIVER CUBES Using the attached template, you are required to create a cube of illustrations and information about the Nile River. All written components must be free of spelling and grammar errors. All illustrations must be full color. There should be no white space on your cube! REQUIREMENTS SIDE ONE: This should include a detailed illustration of the annual cycle of the Nile River. SIDE TWO: This should include written information on the cycle of the Nile. SIDE THREE: This should include a descriptive paragraph describing the Nile River SIDES FOUR AND FIVE: These should include detailed illustrations of Egyptian scenes involving the Nile River. SIDE SIX: This should include a title and your name. PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER When you have completed your cube, cut it out, fold it along the dotted lines, and glue it together. This assignment is due on:. It will be marked out of 55, according to the attached rubric.

6 ANNUAL CYCLE OF THE NILE RIVER June: Snow on the mountains begins to melt. Water runs down the mountains, into the lakes, and into the Nile river. July: Floodwaters start to reach Lower Egypt. September: While the Nile is still shallow, it has become much wider. Villages built on higher ground are typically surrounded by water, like islands in the Nile. October: The flooding has ended. The Nile river has begun to shrink, leaving behind rich black soil that is excellent for farming. November or December: The land near the riverbank has dried well enough to allow crops to be planted in the rich black soil. March and April: Crops are green and ready to harvest. May: The Nile has shrunk to a small stream. The valley has turned brown. June: The cycle starts all over again

9 HIEROGLYPHIC CARTOUCHE PENDANTS MATERIALS: Shrink Plastic Developmental Workbook Hieroglyphic Alphabet Translation Chart Colored Pencils Hole Punch String or Cord PROCEDURE: Carefully trace around your piece of shrink plastic onto your practice paper. Practice writing your name vertically in hieroglyphics within this space. Try to use the entire space. Now you are ready to start on your good copy. Using pencil, carefully make a loop border around your piece of shrink plastic. Make sure to leave your self a lot of room inside the loop, as this loop will contain your name. Punch a hole at the top of your sheet of shrink plastic. Lightly trace your name in hieroglyphics onto your sheet of shrink plastic. Color in your cartouche using colored pencils. When you have completed your cartouche, return it to the teacher, who will shrink it and return it next class. When your pendant is complete, attach a length of cord.

10 MODERN DAY TOMB COLLECTIONS GUIDING QUESTION: What can we learn about Ancient Egypt through the examination of ancient art and artifacts? The ancient Egyptians believed in a life after death that was similar to this one, only better. After death, elements of the person lived on, including the ka or spiritual personality. The ka, which the Egyptians believed could eat, drink, and move around, needed a body to dwell in. For this reason, the dead body was mummified and the tomb was supplied with food, drink, and any other items the Egyptians thought the person might want with them in the afterlife. TASK: You are the Pharaoh and are currently having your tomb prepared. What do you want to have with you in the afterlife? You are required to describe and illustrate a minimum of 10 items that you think you might like to bring with you. You are also required to describe the similarities/differences of the items you choose to bring, in comparison to those brought by the Ancient Egyptians. REQUIREMENTS: A Clear Title ( Modern Day Tomb Collections ) -This should be at the top of each of your pages (your written descriptions on a sheet of lined paper, and your illustrations on a sheet of blank paper) A Description of a Minimum of 10 Items -On a sheet of lined paper, you will need to list your 10 items. Under each item, write a short paragraph describing why you will need that item. Also, be sure to describe the similarities/differences of the items you choose to bring, in comparison to those brought by the Ancient Egyptians. Illustrations of your 10 Items -On a sheet of blank paper, you will need to illustrate and label the items you choose to include. These illustrations need to be full color. This assignment will be out of 40 marks. You will be marked according to the attached rubric.

12 MUMMIFICATION WHEEL As a class, we have learned the steps of the mummification process. Now it is your turn to show what you have learned! TASK On the wheel outline provided, you are required to write about and illustrate the 8 steps of the mummification process. You may want to use your Mummification Process handout to help you (but please use your own words!). REQUIREMENTS For this assignment, you are required to complete the following: A title (The Mummification Process ). This should be in the center of your circle. A written description of the 8 steps of the mummification process. A full color, detailed picture of each of the eight steps.

13 THE MUMMIFICATION PROCESS GUIDING QUESTIONS: How did the Ancient Egyptians meet their basic needs? What can be learned about Ancient Egypt through the examination of art and artifacts? Ancient Egyptians took a lot of trouble preparing for the afterlife. They believed that the human body had spirits that survived after death, but only if the body was preserved. The dead body was preserved by the complicated process of embalming and mummification. Everyone who could afford it made elaborate preparations for this. STEP ONE: The body is washed with Natrondissolved in water. STEP TWO: A long cut is made along the left side of the body to remove the organs. The organs are removed and embalmed separately and placed in canopicjars. The heart, however, is left inside the body for use in the afterlife. STEP THREE: A hooked instrument is used to pull the brain out of the head through the nose. STEP FOUR: The body is soaked in Natronfor 40 days. STEP FIVE: After 40 days in Natron, the body is removed and rubbed with oils.. The body is then stuffed with sawdust and rags. STEP SIX: False eyes and hair are added. STEP SEVEN: The body is wrapped in 20 layers of linen bandages. STEP EIGHT: Portrait masks are added,
