3 Languages The College of North West London is one of the largest Colleges of Further Education in London. It is a longestablished centre for the teaching of languages and attracts students from all over the world. As a state College of Further Education, we employ highly qualified and experienced teachers, and offer students the opportunity to study a wide range of other subjects, to meet other students, and to take an active part in College life. The College is situated on three sites in North West London, The Foreign languages and interpreting courses are held at our Kilburn Centre, which is within easy reach of the museums, galleries, theatres, parks and excellent shopping and transport facilities. A variety of resources, including audio and video, are used in teaching. There are a wide range of facilities available outside the classroom, including a Learning Centre for self-study equipped with computers, video and satellite TV, a large general library and support services to help you in your studies. 4 Interpreting The College is one of the main providers in the country of interpreting courses leading to the Institute of Linguists Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI). The Section offers a wide range of languages. You may be interested in some of the other qualifications including Community Interpreting. Community Interpreting Code: LJPZ This LOCN Certificate course gives an overview of the interpreting techniques and issues for those who are already practising Interpreters as well as for bilingual students who are interested in developing interpreting skills. Upper Intermediate level in English, Upper Intermediate Level in the mother tongue, motivation, commitment and attendance. There will be one formal assessment at interview. Certificate in Community Interpreting (LOCN). You can improve your job prospects or go on to further study. Introduction to the following Public Service Areas: Housing Benefits, Education, Health, Law and practising the following: building a glossary, interpreting practice and developing awareness of the professional code of conduct. Discussion, essays, role plays, interpreting sessions, presentations. Continuous assessment after the completion of each unit. You can begin in either September or February to start on the path of professional training for interpreting work, either one evening a week for one year, or one day a week for 18 weeks. Public Service Interpreting Diploma Code: LJDA The course is offered in the Legal, Health and Local Government Options. It enables those who wish to pursue a career in interpreting within the Public Services to gain a professional qualification from the Institute of Linguists. It is offered in the following languages: French, Spanish, Italian, Turkish, Farsi, Polish, Arabic, Portuguese, and Russian. A language can be offered in any option, depending on the number of students being accepted in a given language. Proficiency in English, degree level in the mother tongue, and previous or current work experience as an interpreter in a public service environment are desirable. Motivation and commitment are essential. You will have an initial course assessment, which includes two tasks: translation of a medical, legal or local government text from English into mother tongue and another text from mother tongue into English. Diploma in Public Service Interpreting, Institute of Linguists. Qualification for employment. Introduction to the English legal system in England and Wales, procedures at a Police Station, interpreting for immigration, Family Law and Civil disputes, Code of Ethics for Interpreters, interpreting techniques, written translation and sight translation. Note-taking exercises, specialised terminology and glossaries, role plays, guest speakers and trips (courts, police station, solicitors). 4 Languages
5 Depending on your specialisation you will also study: introduction to the medical system in England, the medical bodies, NHS, private hospitals Code of Ethics for Interpreters, interpreting and translation techniques, introduction to the concept of Local Government, the Local Government departments and their procedures, Council Services, Social Services, Housing, Planning and Development and education. You will study in language teams through role plays, discussion work, translation and interpreting practice. There will be a mixture of languages in the groups, the main language of instruction is English. Every two weeks, you will have the afternoon session with tutors of your own language. Ongoing assessment throughout the course is specifically designed to monitor progress with an end of year exam. One day a week for one year. Languages For pleasure and for career development, you can join in lively communicative classes for adults. Enjoy speaking and listening to the language as well as learning about the country. Arabic Beginners Code: LJPA Who is the course for? Complete beginners who are interested in learning Arabic for social, travel or work-related reasons. Good level of spoken and written skills in English. No prior knowledge of Arabic is expected. The Awarding Body Consortium (ABC) Practical Languages at Entry Level 3. Progression to a second-year course in Arabic. Everyday phrases, information on places, directions, times, introducing people, understanding signs and filling in forms. The topic areas are travel, accommodation, food and drink, and shopping. All four skills are included: listening, speaking, reading and writing in Arabic. You will be taught in pair work, role play, using visual stimuli, use of audio-visual aids, group discussions. There is regular homework and assessment. Four speaking and listening assessments are carried out in class, and there is a written assessment to be completed at the end of the course. Wembley Park Centre. French Beginners Code: LJPB Complete beginners who are interested in learning French, for social, travel or work related reasons. Good level of spoken and written skills in English. Certificate in Business Language Competence (OCR - CBLC Awarding Body: Oxford Cambridge & RSA Examinations) at Entry Level. You may progress to OCR CBLC Level 1 (Intermediate Level). You will learn to communicate about yourself and how to survive in everyday social and travel situations but has a slight business-language bias. You will be taught using pair work, role play, visual stimuli, use of audio visual aids and authentic material. There will be regular homework and assessment. Four short speaking tests: dealing with visitors, arriving at a hotel, dealing with directions and signs and travelling. Kilburn or Wembley Park Centres. French Intermediate Code: LJPC This course would be of interest to Intermediate students who have completed one year of study in the language or with equivalent experience, who wish to build on their knowledge for social, travel or work related reasons. You can progress on to the GCSE. You should have completed one year of study or have equivalent knowledge at preliminary level. A short oral initial assessment is required. Certificate in Business Language Competence (OCR CBLC - Awarding Body: Oxford Cambridge & RSA Examinations). Level One qualification. The Course concentrates on skills of speaking, understanding and reading. There will be some written tasks. You will develop your skills in order to communicate about yourself and to survive in everyday social and travel situations. A business element is also introduced. You will be taught using pair work, role play, visual stimuli, use of audio visual aids and authentic material. You will have regular homework and assessments. The exam consists of a short oral, listening, reading and writing exam, which takes place in February and May. Kilburn or Wembley Park Centres. French GCSE Code: LJLF People who wish to improve their language for business, social or travel reasons or who wish to improve their GCSE grade. This course is not for beginners. Reasonable knowledge of spoken and written language and grammar are required, gained either from some time spent in the country or previous study. Minimum Grade D for re-sit students. All applicants must take an initial assessment test. GCSE French, Edexcel. After GCSE students may progress to AS Level French. You will improve your ability to speak, understand, read and write around the topic of personal details, social activities, home and local area, the environment, work, travel, world events and issues. You will also learn about the culture and background of French-speaking countries. You will learn using group work, pair work, role play, discussions, presentations, use of audio-visual aids, and study of authentic materials. You 6 Languages

8 will have homework every week and regular assessment. There are four exams to be taken in total, one in each of the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. You can aim for Foundation Level or Higher Level. Irish Intermediate Code: LJPM Beginners who wish to learn the language for social, travel or cultural reasons and Intermediate students who have some knowledge of the language. Elementary knowledge of Irish. Accredited by London Open College Network (LOCN). The course concentrates on skills of speaking and understanding but also practises reading and writing. You will learn to communicate about yourself and how to survive in everyday social and travel situations. You will learn using pair work, role play, visual stimuli, use of audio visual aids and authentic material. You will have regular homework and assessment. Assessments of all four language skills take place in class time during the year.
