3 Session Descriptions and Objectives 1. New understanding and treatments for psychiatric illnesses Sheldon Preskorn, MD, Professor, University of Kansas, Wichita During this session, attendees will review the four sources of clinically meaningful variance amongst patients: Genetics, Age, Disease, and Environment (including dietary, social habits, and concomitant medications. The presenter also will explain how to account for four sources when selecting a specific drug (and dose) for a specific patient within the limits of current knowledge. Then we will discuss how this information is important to optimal care and how likely it will change over the next decade. Learning Objectives: 1. Discuss whatpharmacogenomics means and basic terms. 2. Explain how it is being applied to psychiatry. 3. Provide case examples for clinical relevance. 2. Distinguishing Typical Childhood Development from Psychopathology Kelli Netson, PhD, Assistant Professor, University of Kansas, Wichita The trajectory of typical childhood development includes several behaviors that mimic or suggest psychopathology, but may be within normal limits depending on the age at which they occur. This presentation will address typical developmental expectations and identification of developmental periods where expected behaviors become pathological. Specific signs and symptoms of psychopathology will be discussed in the context of taking a developmental history. Environmental, biological, and familial factors that increase the chances of developing childhood psychopathology will also be addressed. Learning objectives: 1. Identify developmental periods where psychopathology may emerge. 2. Describe behaviors that differentiate normal development from psychopathology. 3. Describe genetic and environmental factors promoting development of childhood psychopathology. 3. ADHD Across the Lifespan Ann Genovese, MD, Assistant Professor, University of Kansas, Kansas City This session will describe ADHD diagnostic considerations, differential diagnoses & comorbidity, the course of ADHD over the lifespan, and management and treatment options. Learning Objectives: 1. Critically evaluate and diagnose ADHD in children and adults 2. Understand the various treatment options for ADHD 3. Individualize the treatment approach for persons with ADHD Page 3/8

An Update on Anxiety Disorders and Their Treatment Glenn Veenstra, PhD, Associate Professor, University of Kansas, Wichita This session will explain three key new neuroscience understandings about what is happening to patients during anxiety experiences. First, the importance of the amygdala in producing the feelings of panic that create and maintain the anxiety disorder will be explained. Second, the power of emotions to influence a person s thinking during an anxious experience will be outlined. Third, the finding that there is a separate extinction circuit which needs to be activated during exposure experiences to control the condition activation circuit will be described. Each new understanding will be paired with the change in the treatment of anxiety disorders. First, psychoeducation about the amygdala will help the patient be more aware of what is happening to them and be able to use mindful attention to control its reaction. Second, the cognitive challenges which have historically depended on logical challenges can now be supplemented by interpreting the emotional processes that create and distort the thinking. Third, awareness of the extinction circuit leads to a focus on increasing the sense of safety during exposure rather than simply trying to reduce the experience of anxiety. Learning Objectives 1. Outline how to reduce amygdala alarm by explaining its functioning and by using mindful attention to refocus its energy. 2. Describe how to change dysfunctional self-talk using neuroscience challenges that supplement the usual CBT techniques. 3. Explain how to improve exposure techniques by mindfully turning on the extinction circuits instead of trying to turn off the conditioning circuits. Faculty Sheldon H. Preskorn, M.D. A fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychopathological Association, Dr. Preskorn has served on advisory committees of the Food and Drug Administration, Veteran s Administration, National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation, and was a consultant to the Menninger Foundation on clinical psychopharmacology. He received his MD degree at the University of Kansas, Kansas City, Kansas. He completed his residency in psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri. He is an international lecturer and the author of over 400 scientific, professional articles and books. Dr. Preskorn has received continuous grant funding since 1978, which has allowed him to pursue research in psychopharmacology and neuroscience of psychiatric illnesses. His clinical research has included pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions, and drug development through all clinical phases from first time in man studies through phase III trials. He has been the principal investigator on over 250 clinical trials including drug development studies of all antidepressants marketed in the United States in the last 25 years. Page 4/8
5 Faculty In addition to this research work, his clinical and administrative experience includes years as supervising physician for an acute psychosis ward, chief of psychiatry for a university affiliated Veteran s Administration Medical Center, director of the KUSM-W Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic, and Chair of the KUSM-W Department of Psychiatry. Currently, Dr. Preskorn spends his efforts on complexities of personalized medicine: how genes, drug-drug interactions, dosing schedules, and other factors can combine to produce clinically meaningful differences in a drug s effect. Kelli Netson, Ph.D. Dr. Netson obtained her M.A. in Medical Psychology, University of Alabama at Birmingham, 2004; Ph.D. in Medical Psychology, University of Alabama at Birmingham, 2008; and Internship in Clinical Neuropsychology, West Virginia University School of Medicine, ; and Fellowship in Pediatric Neuropsychology, St. Jude Children s Research Hospital, She is board certified in Clinical Neuropsychology, Professional Psychology, and Clinical Neuropsychology specializes in neuropsychological evaluation of children with sickle cell disease, genetic disorders, brain tumors, and other childhood cancers. She also provides comprehensive assessment services for children and adolescents with complex medical and neurological problems, as well as ADHD, learning disorders, and other developmental disabilities. In addition to her clinical and research responsibilities, she is a full-time faculty member of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science of University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita, Kansas. Ann Genovese, M.D. Ann Genovese, MD has been a Clinical Assistant Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry with the University of Kansas since She has been a practicing psychiatrist since 1992, completing her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship in Dr. Genovese brings with her a broad clinical and academic experience, having taught and mentored through the Psychiatry Residency Training Programs at both University of Missouri - Columbia and University of Missouri - Kansas City. Dr. Genovese s principal duties include teaching, curriculum development, provision of direct patient care and supervision of medical students, psychiatry residents, and child psychiatry fellows in the outpatient clinic. Glenn Veenstra, Ph.D. Dr. Veenstra obtained his M.A. in Clinical Psychology, Michigan State University, 1969; Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, Michigan State University, 1978; and Family Therapy Training Program for Community Practitioners, The Menninger Foundation, Topeka, Kansas, He specializes in Adult and adolescent psychotherapy with special emphasis on Anxiety disorders, Depressive disorders, Emotional problems (guilt, anger, etc.), Relational difficulties in marriage and families. His research interests are in building models of emotional functioning that integrate neuroscience advances with traditional dynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and interpersonal psychotherapies, and discovering principles that help resolve conflicts between individuals, their family systems, and their spiritual beliefs with a particular interest in forgiveness. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita, Kansas.
