1 The Most Important EMDR Workshop You Didn t Know You Needed! EMDR:Working with Addiction and Substance Use Disorders Presented by Larry Anderson, Psy.D. Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2, 9:00 5:00 Minnetonka Community Center Minnetonka Boulevard, Minnetonka, MN This workshkop has been approved for 13.5 EMDRIA CEUs You may have thought, I don t need a workshop on EMDR and Addiction, because I m not a Chemical Dependency Counselor. A participant in Larry s first offering of this workshop in November, 2013 said, This training on using EMDR with substance use disorders was the best training I have ever attended for helping me understand the connection between trauma and addictions, even compulsive eating, gambling, or shopping. It makes me feel sad how many opportunities I have missed for really making a difference for people with cooccurring disorders. He totally debunked the assumption so many of us were taught that a person has to be maintaining sobriety to benefit from psychotherapy or that the treatment of chemical health is out of my area of expertise because I m not trained as a CD counselor. This workshop will be invaluable to anybody who works with people affected by trauma, which is all of us! Statistically up to 75% of clients with history of trauma have co-occurring substance-related or addiction disorders, although many have not admitted it to you, or perhaps even to themselves. This workshop will go a long way toward building a sense of competency to deal with those diagnoses in your case load.
2 Untreated trauma contributes to substance use disorders, and addictive symptoms complicate the treatment of trauma. This workshop puts you in the position to manage both sides of that coin. Larry will teach you how to target the interface between trauma and addiction. Larry s understanding of addiction and powerful approach to dealing with the shame and increased cravings that may occur when trauma is reprocessed can help prevent relapse, give clients healthier coping strategies, and aid in the recovery process. You will learn a variety of effective preparation phase tools, including Thought Field Therapy and Recovery Centered Resourcing, to give clients power over cravings, while strengthening a healthy, sober lifestyle. Larry will summarize other EMDR addiction protocols, including A. J. Popke s DeTUR and Robert Miller s Feeling State Addictions Protocol. Then he will teach you his own version of adapting the power of EMDR reprocessing with specific targeting to help clients with addiction disorders. Larry has found his protocol, which he calls Craving and Consequence of Use (CUC) to be very successful with clients overcoming addictive urges. This adapted approach to EMDR points the way to changing behavior while strengthening sense of self. The client can replace hopelessness and shame for hope and empowerment. Larry will give you up-to-date information on addiction disorders, neurobiology of addiction, and the variety of resources available locally to help people with recovery. You will be able to talk to clients about addiction and ways you can help directly, as well as having the knowledge base to increase their comfort level with seeking additional help. Being able to provide up-to-date information about addiction to a client s spouse can often change a critical, sabotaging spouse into an effectively supportive person. Larry will also help you become adept at working as a team member with chemical dependency counselors and treatment programs, which can open up a new referral base. Videos and practice opportunities will help solidify your understanding and competence.
3 This workshop will give you the answers in advance to the following kinds of scenarios which represent surprises that may pop up among your clients: A client is on the verge of losing her marriage and/or job because of drinking and she refuses to consider treatment because, I can handle this. You have a client with years of recovery from addiction. The client misses an appointment and his wife calls and says he has gone off the wagon and is sabotaging his life in a several ways. You have been working with a client for several months and then find out that she smokes marijuana daily. A client reports being in jeopardy of losing his job and wife because of having been caught watching internet pornography at work. A client s self-esteem is negatively impacted by being overweight, and she feels like a failure because she has not been able to make the lifestyle changes to improve the situation. Meet the Presenter Larry Anderson, Psy.D., L.P. is a psychologist in private practice who has consulted and worked with several local chemical dependency treatment programs. Currently, he has an ongoing consulting relationship with River Ridge Treatment Center. He has specialized in the field of addictive disorders for 20 years and has earned a Certificate of Proficiency in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders granted by the APA College of Professional Psychology. Dr. Anderson has published on gender specific treatment approaches, presented on an array of chemical health and mental health topics, and served as a special witness before the Minnesota Supreme Court on co-occurring mental and chemical health disorders. Dr. Anderson has used EMDR extensively since being trained in He is an EMDRIA Approved Consultant and a Facilitator with the EMDR Institute and the EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Program. He holds a Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology from John F. Kennedy University.
4 Participants will be able to: Workshop Objectives 1. Summarize the neurobiology of addiction and its significance in working with addictive disorders, 2. Explain how to effectively assess for addiction disorders and how to engage clients to maximize their understanding of and comfort level with treatment options, 3. Identify three EMDR Phase II preparation tools and strategies useful for clients with co-occurring mental health and addiction disorders, 4. Describe and be able to demonstrate how the Cravings and Consequence of Use (CCU) adapted EMDR protocol can be utilized in the treatment of addiction disorders, 5. Explain how the standard EMDR protocol is utilized in targeting trauma and addiction, and identify three adapted EMDR protocols utilized in conjunction with targeting addiction and trauma, 6.
