Physiographically the entire area of Amreli district is more or less plain except for a small hill ranges in areas of Babra, Khambha, Savarkundla and Rajula talukas.the district is drained mainly by Shetrunji, Ghelo, Kalubhar, Raidi and Dhatarvadi rivers. Minor and medium irrigation projects are constructed across the main rivers of the district. The average annual rainfall of last decade is about 582 mm. Geologically the area of Amreli district is covered by Deccan trap lava flows, supra trappeans, Gaj beds, Miliolite Limestone and recent unconsolidated deposits. Deccan trap lava flows cover greater part of the district. The Gaj beds consist of highly fossiliferous, pale yellow limestone, sand and silt along the coastal area of the district. Miliolitic limestone occurs along the coast. It is buff colored, current bedded limestone in the form of coastal ridge and thinning out towards coastal plain. Ground water in the district occurs under unconfined to confined conditions in weathered, fractured and jointed basalt, vesicular basalt fractured dykes, sand and conglomerate's of supra trappeans, porous limestone of Gaj beds, silt and clay of alluvium. In the trap the aquifer ranges in depth from 15 Mts. to 150 Mts. BGL. 3

9 for which the industry, Government, Regulating agencies like Pollution Control Board working in the region and more importantly the population of the area need to extend their co-operation and contribution. It has been evaluated that the surrounding area will not be affected significantly due to the proposed project. Mitigation measures at the source level and an overall Management Plan at the site level are elicited so as to improve the surrounding environment. The following mitigation measures will be taken in order to synchronize the economic development of the project area with environmental protection of the region. The construction phase impacts are mostly short term restricted to the plot area and not envisaged on the larger scale. In the operational phase the environmental impacts are due to continuous operation of the project, hence, the emphasis in the Environment Management Plan (EMP) is to minimize such impacts. The emphasis on the EMP development is on the following. * Mitigation measures for each of the activities causing the environmental impact. * Monitoring plans for checking activities and environmental parameters and monitoring responsibilities * Role responsibilities and resource allocation for monitoring. Following sections describes the environment management plan proposed for site clearing and mining phases. MITIGATION MEASURES :- Each of the activities during production phase is critically reviewed for suggestions of mitigation measures. Based on this, the Table 1 to 6 gives the mitigation measures for the activities considered to be causing significant environmental impacts during production phase of every year. Table :- 1 Environment Management Plan :- Activity Environmental Mitigation Remarks Impacts Site Clearing, Pollmarking and OB Air Water spraying, PPEs will be used 9 Implementation responsibility:

10 removal Land Well maintained vehicles will be used. Metalled Road for vehicle movement. Water -- Noise -- Project Proponent Table :- 2 Environment Management Plan :- Activity Environme ntal Impacts Mining process Air : The mining area, due to its very nature and scale of operation is likely to marginally contribute towards air pollution in the area. This effect is mostly due to dust and fugitive emission. For mine, the only pollution occurs from dust (SPM) during vehicular traffic, operation of cutting machine, loading / unloading etc. As the particles are heavy in nature, they settle easily in the immediate vicinity. There is no other source for SO 2, NOx and cco except a little contributed by the vehicular traffic, which is well below the prescribed limits. Mitigation (a) Construction of well-compacted haul roads and other roads. Remarks Environme ntal Impacts (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) Regular water spraying on roads and waste dumps by tankers. Provision of dust collectors for the cutter machine. Supply of dust masks for cutter machine operators. Transportation by covered trucks. Ensure uses of personal protective equipments. (PPEs) Plantation of wide leaf trees, creepers, tall grasses around quarry sites, waste dumps, rods, colony and other surrounding barren zones. Implementation responsibility: Project Proponent Water : The cause and source of pollution of water in the area could be attributed mostly to the surface runoff during rainy season. Mitigation (a) No overburden or loose sediments will be kept in the working benches particularly during monsoon months.. (b) Check dam will be provided around the overburden dumpsites to arrest flow of loose sediments before discharge into the drainage system of the region. (c) (d) (e) Peripheral drain proposed to arrest the inflow of run off water to the quarry area. The possibility of the project activity contributing to the pollution of watercourses of the region or to the ground water regime is so less that this does not significantly constitute an area of concern. A rain water harvesting pond will built up in lower part of the proposed site, by which natural surface rain water will 10

11 Remarks Environme ntal Impacts automatically come to the pond. The rain water harvesting pond will be in the size to carry minimum 5 days of heavy rain fall in the tank these water passes through the ETP for treatment and then it will be used. The rain water will be used for gardening and plantation etc. Implementation responsibility: Project Proponent Noise : Noise is important parameter of environment in the mines. Noise generated mainly due to cutting machine and vehicular movement. Noise levels are expected to increase at work zone with commencement of mining and allied activities (in comparison to proposed state). The following measures will be taken to reduce noise levels. Mitigation (a) Diesel powered machinery, which are major source of noise in open cast mines, will be properly maintained as per maintenance schedule to prevent undesirable noise. Attention shall be paid towards rigorous maintenance of the silencers of diesel engines. (b) Static diesel engines shall be housed as far as possible (not made of sheet metals) or surrounded by baffles. If possible they will be placed on vibration isolators. (c) Duty hours of operators of noisy machinery like cutting machine will be regulated to keep their noise exposure levels within limits or provision of supplying earplugs for cutting machine operators. (d) Use of only PUC certified vehicles, only trained / approved transporters will be given work for the transportation and ensure proper maintenance of machinery to reduce noise level. (e) Provision of green belt (thick foliage) along the lease boundary and road. Implementation responsibility: Project Proponent Remarks Table :- 3 Environment Management Plan :- Handling and Transportation of Waste materials and products. Activity Environmental Impacts Mitigation Remarks 11

Approximately 1.00 km of length of Kutcha road of 4 m and meet to S.H. No. 34. Water sprinkling on kutcha road will be done twice a day for control of fugitive emission during transportation. Only covered vehicles will be used for transportation. Vehicle speed will be restricted to 15 Km/Hour on kutcha road to reduce fugitive emission. The project is for excavation of Building Stone only up to limited depth of 10.0 m. 14

15 approximately. After the completion of mining activities there will be a pit having 1723 M 2 area and depth of approximately 10.0 m. Reclamation of pit will be carried out by using OB stored on dumps area. Expected and calculated reclamation area would be approximately 258 M 2 and rest pit area of 1465 M 2 would be used as a water reservoir. During the monsoon, rain water will be stored for surrounding farmers for agricultural use and to uplift ground water level. 41. Provision of fencing the pits in case of use as water reservoir. 42. Plan for green belt development, area of green belt, no & types of species to be planted and budgetary outlay for the same Project proponent decided to use the pit as water reservoir so the area granted for mining purpose is about 1723 M 2, before starting the mining activities as per the layout of mining operations, proponent will make pole marking and fencing as first operation. Proponent described the species and budgetary outlay for the green belt, marginal area surrounding lease periphery and plantation on both the side of kutcha road. 15
