2 INTRODUCTION Canterbury Christ Church University Be part of our inspiring and welcoming community Canterbury Christ Church is a modern university, immersed in culture, and with a strong reputation for delivering high quality professional public service education. Our success has led to the growth of campuses across Kent, and development of programmes and research impacting on regional, national and international health and social care services. The University s Faculty of Health and Wellbeing is based at the Canterbury and Medway campuses. As a significant provider of health and social care education in Kent, we offer a forward thinking, innovative and flexible approach to teaching, learning and research. Working in partnership with local NHS Trusts, Health Education Kent, Surrey and Sussex, social work agencies, private health and social care providers and charitable organisations, we support over 3000 students each year with gaining skills and knowledge in order to help them progress their career in the health and social care sector. The experience and expertise we have in education for the health and social care sector puts us amongst the leading universities in the south east of England, and we are continually investing in our students to offer the very best educational experience to support personal and career development. As we move into a rapidly changing sector, we look forward to being at the forefront of health and social care education, supporting the workforce and the sector with a flexible, relevant and focused programme offer. We hope you will be inspired by what we have to offer and we look forward to welcoming you into our supportive and thriving community. 7 5 What does this programme involve? You will be required to attend University six times throughout each academic year. The lectures are held in Canterbury (Kent) and will be Thursday-Saturday attendance. You will be supported to study while away from the University through our Virtual Learning Environment. Each module has self-directed learning which will include studying on your days off, evenings and weekends. There is also work-based learning to complete which involves observing others, learning new skills and reflecting on your experiences. You will need a critical companion who is a work colleague who can support your learning in the workplace. Finally there is always an assessment at the end of the module. How can this programme contribute to my career development? Welfare Officers from a variety of backgrounds often have significant experience and skills gained through work but they do not have the formal qualifications or theoretical knowledge to underpin their practice. This programme aims to enhance your knowledge to help you further your career. BSc (Hons) Applied Practice (Health and Social Care) Who is this programme for? This programme is for those working in the health and social care sector who have a Diploma of Higher Education or a Foundation Degree. If you are a registered professional and do not hold a diploma or have the required 120 level 5 credits to access the Degree programme, you must apply to undertake the Academic Development and Portfolio for Entry to the Degree modules prior to registering for the degree (contact us for more information). This will take one year to complete in addition to the degree programme. Why study this programme? Studying this programme will allow you to develop advanced knowledge, skills and critical thinking related to your role in the workplace. How can this programme contribute to my career development? The BSc Applied Practice Degree has been designed in partnership with local stakeholders to enhance practice as well as heighten personal lifelong learning skills and career prospects for health and social care professionals. What if I have a degree already but wish to increase my knowledge in specific areas of practice or what if I have a degree but do not feel confident to move onto MSc studies? There are two options for students who already hold a health and social care degree: If you undertake two or three modules which hold a 60 credit equivalent rating, you can be awarded a Graduate Certificate. If you undertake modules which hold a 120 credit equivalent rating, you can be awarded a Graduate Diploma.
8 6 MSc in Health and Wellbeing Who is this programme for? The MSc in Health and Wellbeing is designed to be a flexible and responsive programme to meet the learning and development needs of health and social care professionals. This student-centred programme has been developed for those working in a range of roles and service contexts. It is open to both experienced and newly qualified health and social care practitioners. You should normally possess either a relevant degree (usually a degree in health or social science), and/or a professional registration to practise in health and/or social care. Why study this programme? The programme emphasises the need to develop high quality health and wellbeing services for all ages across the health and social care sector. Through critical analysis of theory, research, policy and legislation you will be supported to advance scholarship and practice. A culture of interprofessional collaboration will be fostered through the provision of opportunities to learn with, from and about others. Knowledge and skills gained can enhance your continuing development, improve your performance at work and benefit the organisations that you work for now and in the future. You can undertake the programme in stages initially working towards a Postgraduate Certificate then a Postgraduate Diploma, before completing your Masters qualification. If you do not wish to complete the full Masters, you can choose to complete either a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma, depending on the modules you have accrued. How can this programme contribute to my career development? Enhancing your knowledge and understanding could contribute to your career progression and evidence that you are advancing practice according to professional skills frameworks. In addition, the skills you gain will enable you to write for professional journals and/or present at conferences, sharing best practice and raising your professional profile. Your postgraduate qualification will also help you to stand out in an increasingly competitive employment market, supporting you to consider senior, specialist or advanced roles within the health and social care arena, the independent and voluntary sector or education. When to apply Most of our modules and programmes start in September (application deadline mid-july) or January/February (application deadline mid-december). Recognising prior learning If you have gained Higher Education credits within the last five years you may be able to use these credits towards your award. You will need to complete an application form once you are registered to a programme and send this with a copy of the transcript from the awarding university to us. This includes credits achieved previously at Canterbury Christ Church University. Your application will be reviewed by the Faculty s Recognising Prior Learning Committee. Please note that a maximum of half the credits needed for your award can be used. You may be able to accredit prior experiential learning. This involves submitting a portfolio of learning which demonstrates how you have achieved the outcomes for the module you wish to accredit. 9 7 Bespoke learning and development Our tailored master classes, action learning sets and facilitation of learning options are popular because they offer flexibility. They can be delivered in-house or at one of our campuses across Kent in Canterbury, Medway or Broadstairs and they are developed with the employer to meet specific organisational, team and individual objectives. Once the objectives and expected outcomes have been agreed, centre staff co-ordinate the development of the master classes, action learning sets or module content, registration of students, student support and student assessment to ensure success in the student learning. A key aspect of our bespoke learning and development is that all students have a personal academic tutor who is the first point of contact for their studies and who acts as a source of advice. For an initial free consultation about your workforce development needs, please contact: e: workbasedlearning@canterbury.ac.uk Many individuals, teams and organisations are involved in service developments to enhance the users experience and ensure safe and effective person-centred care. Through bespoke learning and development packages the individual is able to make sense of their learning and gain academic credits. This approach is valued by individuals, teams and organisations as it allows them to lead the learning and ensure it links to appraisal and organisational objectives. It also enables in-house development courses to be accredited in an appropriate manner. Claire Thurgate, Centre Director Academic expertise in an appropriate manner. The Centre comprises a team of eight academic staff who have workforce development expertise in: Work-based learning and accreditation of bespoke education Developing the non-registered workforce Facilitating and mentoring work-based learning Developing and delivering bespoke learning for the non-registered workforce Continuing development for those who are in work and who are studying
10 8 Working in partnership to champion workforce development The Centre s research expertise and partnership work with local employers has led to numerous projects that have directly impacted on workforces including: The development of a Leadership Framework for Social Care in Kent in partnership with Kent Care Trainer Alliance In partnership with Kent Care Trainer Alliance the Centre for Work-Based Learning and Continuing Development designed a leadership framework for social care in Kent which was shared with Kent County Council s Transformation Board as a tool to support leadership development. I have to congratulate the Centre for Work-Based Learning and Continuing Development as they have put this Leadership Framework together, it is just what is required. Care Home owner Understanding the work-based learning journey in partnership with East Kent Hospitals This project highlighted the impact for the individual, team and organisation of developing the workforce from within. It provided an insight into the personal experiences of those involved in work-based learning and how an increase in knowledge enhanced confidence and safe, effective person-centred care.
