2 Nursing Contact Hours NAPHE is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the South Central Accreditation Program (SCAP), an accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Contact Hours: 6.0 WOCN Review 6.0 Shampoos, Tattoos, and BBQ s Wound Care Institute (2 days main conference) Successful Completion: You must be present no later than 5 minutes after the start of the educational activity and attend the entire day s program. Each day can be attended separately. You must complete the on-line evaluation form. Be sure your is legible and included on the registration information. The online evaluation activity form will only be available until April 15, If you have not completed an evaluation form by that date, you will not receive contact hours for attendance at this program. Your electronic CE certificate can be printed immediately after you complete the online evaluation. Neither ANCC, SCAP or the Provider Unit endorse any commercial products discussed displayed in conjunction with this educational activity Purpose: The purpose of the conference is to help nurses working with wounds, ostomies and continence issues to gain an awareness of new guidelines in wound management, education, and practice innovations that will promote professional growth and development to improve patient outcomes. Target Audience: The Wound Care Institute is primarily designed for nurses working with patients with wounds, ostomies or continence issues. This includes staff nurses in acute care, long term care and home care, nurse managers/administrators, advanced practice nurses, community health nurses, educators, researchers, and entrepreneurs. Allied health personnel including physical therapists, will also benefit from the information presented. Nursing students are always welcome! Conference Learning Outcomes At the end of this program attendees will be able to: 1. Describe the pathology, clinical presentation and management guidelines for wounds, ostomies and continence issues. 2. List at least three examples of evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes in the management of wounds, ostomies and continence. 3. Identify key laboratory values used in the management of care for patients with wound, ostomy and continence issues. 4. Apply the newest developments in the 2014 International Pressure Ulcer Guidelines to clinical practice in preventing and managing wounds. 5. Discuss how to incorporate evidence-based practice into your current clinical practice. Poster Abstracts Submit by February 15, 2015 Consider submitting a poster related to wound, ostomy and continence issues or an evidence-based clinical study with implications for nursing practice. Abstracts will be peer reviewed with notification of acceptance within two weeks after submission. 3 Barb Bancroft, RN, MSN, PNP Barb has over 25 years of teaching experience teaching students, nurses, practitioners, educators, and lay audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada. She also has 25 years of feeling the pulse of nursing, as she has provided over 2200 continuing education seminars to nursing students, professional nurses, and nurse educators. Barb has also taught at various universities in her career, including the University of Virginia, the University of Arkansas, Loyola University of Chicago, and St. Xavier University of Chicago. She has provided courses in Advanced Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Physical Assessment to undergraduate and graduate students. Joyce M. Black, PhD, RN, CWCN, FAAN Joyce is an Associate Professor of Nursing with the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. She started in wound healing in 1975 while working in reconstructive surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Joyce is a past President of NPUAP and chair of the task force to redefine stages of pressure ulcers including deep tissue injury. Her research continues in the area of pressure ulcer prevention. Janet M. Davis, MSN, RN, GNP, CWOCN Janet has been a board-certified WOC Nurse for over 20 years. Her varied clinical experiences in acute care, outpatient, home care and long-term care nursing have provided valuable clinical experiences in the arena of wounds, ostomies and continence care. Janet has been an educator of WOC nursing topics since 1990, including serving as the Program Director of the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Education Program at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dorothy Doughty, MN, RN, CWOCN, CFCN Dorothy obtained her BSN from Medical College of Georgia and her MN from Emory University. She has been a WOC nurse since 1980 and has been the director of the Emory University WOC Nursing Education Program since She has a number of publications and presentations in the field of WOC nursing and is past President of the WOCN Society. Debbie Fulmer, MSN, RN, CWOCN Debbie graduated from the University of Central Arkansas and attended the Emory Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Education program in She is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith and works with healthcare facilities as a wound, ostomy and continence nurse consultant. Diana L. Gallagher, MS, RN, CWOCN, CFCN Diana began her nursing career on a busy medical/surgical unit and it was there that she first worked with a WOC Nurse and recognized what a critical difference they make. Diana graduated from Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Education Program at Emory University in She was instrumental in beginning the NW Arkansas Ostomy Support Group and maintains a busy consulting practice working directly with patients and referring physicians.
4 Sunday, March 15 WOC Nursing Certification Review Course Dorothy Doughty, MN, RN, CWOCN, FAAN This preconference workshop is designed to help prepare the WOC nurse for the board certification exams. The review will include study tips and techniques as well as a review of major content areas based on the exam blueprints. Sample questions will be included. At the end of this program, the attendees will be able to: 1. Identify study strategies that increase the potential for success on the certification exams. 2. Identify wound etiology and implications for management. 3. Identify systemic and local factors affecting repair and guidelines for management. 4. Describe indications, surgical procedures, and management guidelines for each of the following: ileostomy; colostomy; urostomy; continent ileal reservoir; continent urinary diversion; orthotopic neobladder; ileal pouch anal anastomosis. 5. Identify common stomal and peristomal complications and guidelines for diagnosis and management. 6. Describe pathology, clinical presentation, and management guidelines for each of the following: stress urinary continence; intrinsic sphincter deficiency; overactive bladder/urge continence; neurogenic bladder; functional continence; enuresis; retention. 7. Describe neurologic pathways affecting bladder and sphincter function. 8. Describe assessment and management guidelines for the patient with bowel dysfunction or fecal incontinence. Questions to be answered will include: What are the two most important fundamental aspects of infection control? Do vaccines trigger chronic diseases? Is there a connection between autism and vaccines? What vaccines should you get as an adult? Why have previously controlled infections such as pertussis, measles, and mumps made a comeback of sorts? How much fecal material do you deposit in your underwear every day? How long does MRSA live on a keyboard? How many diseases can you get from tattooing and piercing? Why were we able to eradicate smallpox?
