2 The mission of the Summer Institute for School Nursing is to foster evidence-based practice in the school setting and promote competency in school nursing. The conference is appropriate for school nurses, school nurse coordinators, and supervisors of health services. Contact hours are being provided by the Virginia Association of School Nurses. Funding for CEUs is being provided by a grant from the Virginia Department of Education. Approximately 6.25 contact hours may be earned for pre-conference, 10.5 for the main conference, and 8 hours for the post-conference session, depending on course completion and attendance. Contact hours for the NASN SCOT session will be provided by NASN. To be eligible for contact hours for all other sessions, participants must attend the entire session and complete the online session evaluation for each session attended and the general evaluation for the conference. A completed, legible copy of the Contact Hour Worksheet must be turned in at the completion of the conference. An link to the online evaluation tool will be sent to all participants after the conference is completed. You will have two weeks to complete the evaluations. If all of the above requirements are met, a Certificate of Continuing Education will be ed within 2 weeks after the conference. Be sure to include a HOME address on the Contact Hour Worksheet. Contact Hours will NOT be available after the conference. The Virginia Association of School Nurses is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Virginia Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. All participants must be pre-registered. The registration fee of $ covers conference materials; dormitory housing in ARC, Wheeler and/or Frazer Halls, double occupancy for two (2) nights (2 night minimum stay); lunch and dinner on Monday; breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Tuesday; and breakfast on Wednesday. The $ registration fee applies to partial attendance or off-campus registration. Private rooms will not be available. Please be aware the University passed a tobacco-free policy effective June 1, Conference participants can register for free Wi-Fi internet in all academic and public University spaces by connecting to the LancerNet Visitor network. No special request is required. Online Registration and Payment by credit card. All registrations must be completed online and payment may be made online by credit card when registration is complete. A receipt for payment by credit card will be provided immediately upon completion of online registration submission. The final deadline for registration and payment by credit card is June 12, Registrations will be capped at 375. Another person may substitute for a participant who is unable to attend. Please notify Freddie Adcock, adcockfs@longwood.edu regarding substitutions by June 19, Refunds will be available only in emergency situations and requests must be received in format by close-of-business on June 24 th to adcockfs@longwood.edu. No refund requests will be processed after that date. When requesting a refund the stock number provided to you at registration must be provided for tracking purposes. Refund payments will be processed after July 20 th. A $35.00 management fee will be assessed for all refunds and will be deducted from the amount of refund. Online Registration and Payment by check. Registration must be completed online. Please print a copy of the completed online registration, attach payment and mail with your check to Longwood University, Cashiering Office, 201 High Street, Farmville, VA Multiple payments (group payments) will be accepted by check. However, each individual must register online and a copy of each registration must accompany the check for proper crediting. When submitting registration online and paying by check, a receipt of payment will be sent to the address provided on the registration form as soon as payment is received. A $50.00 returned check fee will be assessed if check does not clear for payment and your registration will be voided. Registrations will not be secured until payment is received in full. Deadline for payment by check is May 29, Registrations will be capped at 375. Another person may substitute for a participant who is unable to attend. The campus map, university rules and regulations, and helpful tips for dormitory living will be included in your packet. Conference schedules with session choices will be included in your check in
3 package as well as attached to the ed confirmation packets you will receive. Check-in hours will be 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 13, 2015, in the Lankford Student Union. If you are attending the Pre-Conference ONLY on Sunday afternoon, July 12 th and Monday morning July 13 th, you may check-in at the Lankford Student Union from 12:30 to 1:30pm on Sunday July 12 th. The fee for attending the Preconference is an additional $ No meals will be provided on Sunday; however breakfast will be served from 7:15-8:15am prior to the continuation of sessions on Monday morning. If you would like to stay on campus on Sunday evening, single rooms (suite set-up with a shared bath) are available for 1 night at the rate of $55.00 per person. (Suitemate choices are available, however a discount is not available for shared rooms, and this is a single room rate only for 1 night.) If you would like to attend the Pre-conference and you will also be attending the Conference the additional $50.00 fee is necessary; however double (shared room) housing will be included at no extra charge. No meals will be provided on Sunday. Breakfast is included on Monday morning before the Pre-conference continues. This year a Post-conference is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The fee of $60.00 includes lunch and dinner on Wednesday, and breakfast on Thursday morning. Housing is also included on Wednesday evening. Participants must attend the Summer Institute for School Nursing in order to register for the Post-conference. If you would like to attend, please make this choice on the online registration form. The Longwood University Health and Fitness Center will be open for conference participants Monday and Tuesday evenings until 8:00 p.m. at no additional cost. Please note that Longwood University is not a barrier free environment. If you have any questions about access and/or accommodations, contact the Director of Disability Resources, at Costs related to accommodations will be assumed by the participant and MUST be prearranged. Please note a great deal of walking in hot, humid conditions is necessary during the conference. Registration questions should be directed to Freddie Adcock, adcockfs@longwood.edu, Pre-conference Sessions Sunday, July 12, 2015 Pre-conference sessions are designed for newly hired (within 2 years) school nurses and school nurse coordinators/supervisors. Separate tracks will be provided for each group. Please note that you must register separately for the pre-conference sessions and there is an additional fee. Meals will not be provided on Sunday, July 12th. Breakfast is provided on Monday, July 13th for pre-conference participants only. Once you have checked in on July 12th, it is not necessary to check-in again on July 13th for the main conference. Lunch on Your Own 12:30 p.m. 1:30 p.m. Check-in 2:00 p.m. 5:15 pm. Pre-conference Session 1 Fundamentals of School Nursing Part I - Topics of discussion will include school entrance requirements, mandated health screening, confidentiality, documentation, and the scope and standards of school nursing practice. This class is a must for new school nurses! Basic Training for New School Nurse Coordinators Part I - This session will be an opportunity for new school nurse coordinators to learn from experienced nurses who have served in this role. The concept of transformational leadership will be introduced, including an opportunity for identifying leadership styles and evidence-based leadership strategies. Dinner on Your Own
4 Pre-conference Sessions Monday, July 13, :15 a.m. 8:15 a.m. Breakfast 8:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Pre-conference Session 2 Fundamentals of School Nursing Part II This session will provide an overview of the role of the school nurse in Special Education and hands on experience in screening techniques for vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening. Tips from an experienced school nurse and helpful resources will be shared. Basic Training for New School Nurse Coordinators Part II - This session will be an interactive session discussing some of the most important school nurse coordinator basics. School Health Update (3:15pm-3:45pm) Tia Campbell, School Health Specialist, Virginia Department of Education. This session will provide school nurses with current information regarding health trends in Virginia, the burden of disease on the educational system, and current staffing statistics in the state. 3:45 p.m. 5:15 p.m. General Session The Nurses! Alexandra Robbins. Ms. Robbins is the author of four New York Times bestsellers. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, and other publications. The recipient of the Heartsongs Award for contributions to the mental health of children and young adults, Robbins has appeared on numerous television shows, including 60 Minutes, The Today Show, Oprah, The View, various CNN programs, and The Colbert Report. 7 School Nurse Childhood Obesity Toolkit (SCOT) A Program for School Nurses Wednesday, July 15, 2015/8:00am-1:00pm Virginia Department of Education Summer Institute for School Nurses Conference Longwood University Farmville, Virginia Description: SCOT is an educational program developed by the National Association of School Nurses. Course materials include a SCOT Participant manual and numerous resources to support school nursing practice as it relates to obesity prevention and treatment. A completed evaluation and full day attendance are required for 4.5 CNE contact hours to be awarded. Program Objectives: 1. Recognize the school nurse role advocating for policy change to promote healthy lifestyles. 2. Identify evidence based school programs to promote healthy lifestyles.
