2 Mother s day May 12, 2013 Dear Friends, Welcome to the 21st annual Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure! Each Race is an exciting time for western Pennsylvania as thousands gather in Schenley Park to continue our fight against breast cancer. After working first hand with breast cancer patients and losing friends and family to this disease, we understand the importance of finding the cures and we appreciate your efforts to better the lives of women and men in our community. We have been proud to watch this event increase from 3,000 attendees to a regional Mother s Day tradition for more than 30,000 men, women, and children in the area. As one of the largest Races in the Komen series, the Pittsburgh Race for the Cure hosts approximately 3,000 breast cancer survivors and their friends and families who have honored and celebrated loved ones who struggle with breast cancer. Komen Pittsburgh s most notable accomplishment, however, is the impact we have had on breast cancer. With your help, we have contributed more than $17 million for breast cancer education, screening and treatment initiatives in central and western Pennsylvania and dedicated an additional $7.5 million to support national breast cancer research through Komen s National Research Grants Program, including many housed at the University of Pittsburgh. On behalf of the Komen Pittsburgh Affiliate staff and board of directors, we both sincerely thank you for your continued support. Because of you, women and men are being diagnosed earlier and living longer as families and friends grow old together. One day, we will have the cures. 3 Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure From the Race Chair: Good morning, When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, I was confused, scared, and upset. My wonderful life with my husband, Joseph, and our great children, Connor and Blair, was turned upside-down. I never imagined that one day I would be given the honor of chairing the Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure it s such an inspiring event for a wonderful organization and thousands of brave survivors. I am truly humbled to represent such a strong group of women and men who have faced breast cancer. In the six years since my diagnosis, I have proudly been a part of Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh s mission to find the cures for breast cancer. Through this work, I have met many other women like me who were overwhelmed by their diagnosis until Komen was able to help them find the treatment and care they needed. Promoting awareness and raising funds for Komen has given me the opportunity to fight back. I don t know where I would be today without the support of my family, friends, and Komen. With so many women and men at risk for breast cancer, it s essential to stress the importance of early detection and knowledge of risk factors. The most important thing for us all to remember is that we are not alone. Your participation helps us fund education, screening and treatment initiatives in our 30-county service area and national breast cancer research programs. On Race day, make sure to visit our sponsor tents for giveaways and education materials. For everyone s safety, participants are discouraged from bringing inline skates and pets to the Race for the Cure. No strollers/walkers are permitted on the Race course before or during the 5K run. On behalf of the customers and employees of PNC, I would like to welcome you to the 21st annual Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure. We are very honored to once again be the presenting sponsor for this year s race. What began with only 3,000 participants has grown to become one of the largest races of any kind in Pennsylvania. Today, more than 30,000 participants will either run or walk to help find a cure for breast cancer. As you look around this morning, you will see many people who have been deeply affected by this disease. Whether you are running in memory of someone close to you, in celebration of a survivor or as a survivor yourself, know that you are not alone in this race. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds from the Pittsburgh Race remain in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities to fund local yearround programs, with the remaining 25 percent supporting the Komen Foundation National Research Program. What has always been remarkable to me is this event is much more than a race it s truly a celebration of life. Breast cancer profoundly touches so many people, in so many different ways. 6 Mother s day May 12, PNC Community Caring Award Recipient Lou Ann Jeremko Director, Cancer Screening Program and Statewide Cancer Programs Adagio Health, Inc. Lou Ann Jeremko has dedicated her life to healthcare and assisting women who may otherwise have nowhere to turn. As Adagio Health s Director of statewide screening services, Lou Ann oversees the agency s administration of the PA Department of Health s HealthyWoman and WISEWOMAN programs. In this role, Lou Ann has made a difference throughout all 67 counties of Pennsylvania. I began working with Adagio Health s cancer screening program 20 years ago, explains Lou Ann. Since then, we have provided breast and cervical cancer screening to more than 11,000 women each year. Many of these women have little or no insurance, and we are able to provide these services at no cost to them. Most importantly, we are also able to educate women and provide outreach in communities, helping them understand the importance and guidelines of screening and where they can receive them in their own community. The need for programs like the MVP and HealthyWoman has increased with rises in unemployment and insurance costs, and the growing need for providers that women can trust, according to Lou Ann. Luckily, we have seen great technological improvements in the last twenty years, from ultrasound to stereotactic biopsies. Now, our challenge is to ensure that all women, regardless of their socioeconomic status, can benefit from these technologies.
