3 5K Walk & 5K / 10K RUN THANK YOU FOR JOINING US FOR THE 18th ANNUAL MOTTEP LIFE WALK/RUN! On behalf of Gift of Life MOTTEP (Minority Organ Tissue Transplant Education Program), recipients, waiting recipients and donor families, we welcome you to the 18th Annual LIFE Walk/Run. By participating in this event, you will support those individuals and families waiting for life saving organs. Can you believe that LIFE Walk/Run is in its 18th year of promoting public awareness about organ and tissue donation? This years event is just around the corner! We encourage all participants to register on the Michigan Donor Registry to officially record their decision to be an organ and tissue donor. July 25, 2015 will be a day filled with family, friends, food, and fun. We invite you to come join with donors, donor families, recipients, waiting recipients and others who share the message that each one can extend life through organ and tissue donation one step, at a time. We will see you there as one person, one family, one team, one organization, with one purpose - to save lives. This event helps us educate multicultural communities about the need for donors and how you can save lives. Meet and greet your local civic and community leaders, meet and make new friends, receive health screenings, visit vendor tables, enjoy face painting, enjoy a heart healthy breakfast & lunch, potentially lose up to 5,000 calories, receive a free t-shirt with registration and know that you are helping us to saving lives. Invite your family, friends, co-workers and others to join you in forming a team. This handbook was developed to help you with online registration and provide you with helpful recruiting tools and tips. It includes everything you need to know about being a Team Captain and walker/runner. It also includes fundraising tools and tips to make your LIFE Walk experience something that you will enjoy doing for years to come. 4 5K Walk & 5K / 10K RUN ONLINE REGISTRATION To get started, visit Select the category for which you are registering (Walker/5K Run/10K Run), then select the number of people you are registering, in the drop down option under quantity. Once you have selected the number of people you are registering, click the REGISTER NOW button. The registration page will pop up in a separate window (see image 1a you may have to scroll down to see the full registration screen). image 1 SCREEN FOR REGISTERING YOURSELF FOR THE 1ST TIME You have the option of signing in with FirstGiving if you already had an account, signing in with your Facebook account or preceding with the registration and making a FirstGiving account. The last part of the first page asks, What should your profile URL be? it image 1a will provide a default URL with your name or you have the option to change it to what you want. (this is where you can direct people to contribute on your behalf for any event you have registered with through FirstGiving). Once you have completed this first page, click the green NEXT button. This will take you to the second step, where it will ask if you are registering for yourself (see image 1b) or on behalf of someone else (see image 1c). (note - if you are using the option of registering someone else, you will need a valid address from them). It will also ask questions, participating as, in honor of, your t-shirt size and your gender and date of birth. When registering yourself, you will need to click the grey I have read and agree to the above event waiver button, before you can click the green NEXT button. SCREEN FOR REGISTERING SOMEONE ELSE image 1b image 1c If you are registering someone else they will be required to sign the waiver on event day.
5 ONLINE REGISTRATION (cont) 5K Walk & 5K / 10K RUN The next screen will be the TEAM Screen (see image 2). This is where you can JOIN or START a team. If you are joining a team that is already registered, you will see them in the list of teams and you can just click the Join button. If you are starting a team, you can do that by clicking Would you like to start a new team, and a pop up window will appear asking you to name your team and give a short description. (see image 2a below) If you do not wish to join a team, click the I don t want to join a team option. image 2 It will then take you to the next screen that gives you an option of creating your own personal fundraising page (see image 3). If you chose to create a fundraising page, name your page, share your story, set your fundraising goal and click next. If you do not wish to set up a fundraising page at this time click on the I don t want to creata a page at this time option at the bottom of the screen. You will be taken to the final step where you pay for registration (see image 4) image 3 If you have any discount codes you will enter them on this screen. A confirmation will be sent to your addres or to the address of the person you registered. Once you hit SUBMIT, you will get a confirmation screen (see image 5 on next page). image 2a image 4
6 5K Walk & 5K / 10K RUN ONLINE REGISTRATION (continued) Your confirmation screen will list what category for which you registered, your name or the name of the person you registered, address and the total amount charged (see image 5). CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are now registered and ready to take part in the 18th Annual LIFE Walk/Run Experience! image 5 The LIFE Walk/Run is more than a 5K & 10K For those who don t want to walk or run, there are many other event festivities! Join us for a fun-filled celebration including music, food, giveaways and exciting activities for all age. RECRUIT and FUNDRAISE using Social Media Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are perfect for fundraising and team building! Invite all of your Facebook friends and Twitter followers to join your team, make a contribution or to start a team. Create a special profile photo advertising the event for all of your friends to see Post on your friends pages about LIFE Walk/Run Post status updates about the event and link to your fundraising website. Share photos from the photo gallery of last year s event. Facebook.com/MOTTEP Use the hashtag #motteplifewalk when posting to social media sites
7 How To Form A Team Recruit, Recruit, Recruit 5K Walk & 5K / 10K RUN Make a list of possible team members: family, friends, co-workers, classmates, sorority sisters, fraternity brothers, church members, golf league, bowling league etc. Determine a team name. You may want to wait until you have your team assembled before naming it. Set a fundraising goal. Register your team on online or download the team registration form and mail it in or drop it off at our office. 736 Lothrop, Detroit, MI Recruitment Tips When recruiting co-workers, obtain permission from your supervisor or manager. Speak about LIFE Walk/Run at a company or employee meeting. Ask a supervisor or manager to send an on your behalf. Include details on how they can sign-up. Post information in your workspace & public places, like fliers in the lunch room. Place a sign-up sheet for those who want to join the team. Offer incentives for signing up. Set a deadline. Conduct a drawing for those who register early. Combine the walk with company fitness efforts/wellness programs. Invite co-workers to join your team and walk or train during breaks or lunch. Double your money. Ask your company to match all monies raised and put the company name on your T-shirt. Managing Your Team Send s to your friends, family, and co-workers to join or sponsor your team. Pesonalize your fundraising page with photographs and a personal story. Use to inform members about team meetings or group fundraising activities. Set a team fundraising goal and a team recruitment goal. Track fundraising and recruitment progress online. Check team rankings to see how your team compares to others. The FirstGiving website is a safe and secure way to fundraise. Every effort is made to ensure your privacy and financila information is protected.
8 5K Walk & 5K / 10K RUN Have Your Team? Next Steps... Provide each team member with a LIFE Walk/Run flyer and the website to log on and register. Personalize the cause. Are you participating in honor or memory of someone, a donor or recipient, inform members. Set a fundraising goal together, one that translates into individual team goals. For example, a team of 10 may set a goal of $500, each team member will be requested to raise $50. Encourage team members to collect donations from those wishing to support their efforts. Organize team fundraisers such as bake sales or raffles to help the team reach its goal. Set a deadline for each team member to collect their donations and turn them in to you. Its recommended that the Team Captain turn in the money for the entire team prior to LIFE Walk/Run. Use FirstGiving (online registration software), to create a personal page. Customize your page with a personal message, photo or video and send out via . This is great way to offer donors the immediate opportunity to support your efforts by making a credit card donation online. On average, walkers who ask for donations by raise eight times more funds than walkers who use mail. Make it fun and update your team page frequently. Share new ideas and tips as well as updates on team progress. Develop incentives, select team colors and design a team t-shirt. Take a team photo and upload to your team fundraising page. Day of Walk Pre-registration Those who registered online prior to the walk should check in at the Pre-registration table. At that time walkers and runners will receive their arm badge, number and t-shirt. Donations of checks and cash can be turned in at this time. Once checked in, proceed to the LIFE Walk Cafe and enjoy fresh fruit, bagels, coffee and juice and enjoy the Pre- Walk festivities and vendors. Team Check-in Walkers and Runners that are members of a team should check with their captain. They will have your teams information, numbers and t-shirts. Day of Registration Those who did not register online or missed the early registration deadline, please visit the Day of Registration table. You will complete a form and pay your registration fee and at that time you will receive your arm badge, number and t-shirt.
