3 2012 Bee College Information The most extensive educational honey bee event in the state of Florida is back! Members of the University of Florida s Honey Bee Research and Extension Laboratory are pleased to announce the 5th annual Bee College. This year we have three international and two national guest speakers and countless new additions to the lecture and workshop lineup. Our invited speakers this year include Dr. Larry Connor of Wicwas Press, known for his apicultural extension experience and knowledge of queen rearing, and Michael Young MBE, Chairman of the Institute of the Northern Ireland Beekeepers, a world-class honey judge, artist and advocate of the honey bee. We are excited to host Drs. Niko and Gudrun Koeniger, veteran bee researchers from Oberursel, Germany, who will be sharing their life-long experiences on honey bee mating, diversity and challenges. We are also pleased to host Dr. Michael Hood of Clemson University, who will share his expertise on honey bee pest management. The two-day event offers classes for beekeepers of all ages and experience levels, gardeners, naturalists, county agents, and anyone else interested in honey bees. You do not have to keep bees to attend; the only prerequisite is your interest in the subject! Even if you have attended the UF Bee College before, we are sure that you will find that the new course lineup will fulfill your practical needs as well as satisfy your growing curiosity on a diversity of honey bee related subjects. We have a suggested beginner track lineup (in orange on the schedule) for novices, though students at the 2012 UF Bee College may attend any course regardless of expertise. The Saturday Junior Bee College is back by popular demand and will be available for children 6 16 (teachers and parents are welcome to attend). We will be hosting African Bee Training for Pest Control Operators (PCO). The PCO course is included in the price of Bee College registration. However, we offer a reduced fee if you and/or your company wishes to attend only the training course (i.e., not the entire Bee College). Be sure to indicate on your registration form if you are interested in attending. We also are offering the following courses that require preregistration (see registration form) because of limited space availability: Nosema Dissections (please bring a jar of 25 forager bees in rubbing alcohol), Hands-on Queen Grafting, FABIS Training, the Welsh Oral Training/Exam, and the Jr. Bee College. Included in the registration fee on both days are snacks, catered lunches, a catered banquet dinner on Friday evening, and the ice cream social following the awards ceremony. During the ceremony, we announce students who have advanced in the Master Beekeeper Program held the previous day, new Welsh Honey judges, and the place winners and best of show in the UF Bee College Honey Show, as well as give out door prizes (tickets available at registration Friday morning). Our team of experts and dedicated staff is excited to host the 5th annual Bee College. We look forward to seeing you there! The Honey Bee Research and Extension Lab at the University of Florida How to Prepare, What to Bring Don t forget to register by mailing in your registration form with payment! We will not be able to take many walk-ups, because we fill up early. Book your hotel room early! If you are entering our Honey Show, don t forget to review the general rules in this brochure. If you have a personal veil or suit, feel free to bring it; we offer open hive demonstrations both days. Don t worry; we have plenty of protective gear for everyone if you don t have your own. Food will be provided, so no need to pack a lunch. There will be several vendors selling beekeeping equipment and books, so be sure to bring cash. 5 5th Annual Bee College Honey Show All UF Bee College students are encouraged to participate in the 5th annual Bee College Honey Show. Entry is free! Our honey show is the largest in the state, and winners can proudly claim the title of Best Honey in Florida! Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to showcase all of your (and your bees!) hard work. The show will be judged using the Welsh Honey Judge methods by certified Welsh Honey Judges and Stewards, and winners will be announced during the awards ceremony Friday evening. Despite the name, the Honey Show isn t just for honey! You can submit honey products, art/photography and observation hives too. A Best of Show will be chosen from all of the 1st place winners. It is important that you read all of the following rules regarding the UF Bee College Honey Show. Entries can be disqualified for failure to adhere to any of the following requirements. General Rules Only registered UF Bee College participants may enter. The UF Bee College reserves the right to limit the number of entries on a first-come, firstadmitted basis. There are thirteen show classes: (1) extracted honey light, (2) amber, (3) dark, (4) chunk honey, (5) black jar, (6) cut-comb, (7) creamed honey, (8) beeswax cake (a single molded piece of two pounds or more), (9) mead, (10) candle (poured or dipped, straight or ornamental), (11) original bee-related photography, (12) original bee-related art, and (13) beekeeping gadgets. Contestants may enter in any or all classes but may enter only once per class. All honey and beeswax entries must have been produced by the submitter and within the last 12 months. This restriction does not apply to entries in mead, photography, art, and gadgets. All entries for honey and candles must be submitted in triplicate: i.e., three matching jars of honey, three boxes of cut-comb, or three candles. Submit extracted honey in standard one-pound queenline jars; either plastic or glass is acceptable. Submit chunk honey in standard one-pound chunk honey jars with wide mouths and straight sides. Insert only one piece of comb in jar. The sole criterion in the black jar class is flavor. Your entry will be placed into black jars by staff. Only one jar of honey is needed for the black jar category. Beeswax entries must be pure beeswax. Mead must be submitted in a clear, standard 750ml bottle with a fully inserted cork, no labels. Art and photography must be presented in a self-standing frame, and each accompanied with a 3 5 card giving the title, artist, and brief story behind the piece. Each gadget must be accompanied by a 3 5 card explaining its use. Do not label products in any way; an identifying code sticker will be assigned to your entry at registration. All entries must be submitted by 12:00 noon, Friday, March 9. Judging criteria are selected at the discretion of Judge, and decision of Judge is final. Welsh Honey Judging Info Coupled with the UF Bee College Honey Show will be training for Welsh Honey Judging Certification. Welsh Honey Judge Training is the most stringent training for would-be honey judges in the world. Training for the Welsh Honey Judge Examination will be held on FRIDAY ONLY and requires a separate fee (see registration form). Entry-level students are given the opportunity during the Bee College to complete the first two of four requirements: (1) attendance in the Friday afternoon training session, (2) documented experience as a steward (judge s assistant), (3) documented experience as a senior honey show judge, and (4) successful completion of the oral examination. For students participating in this year s training, requirement 3 can be fulfilled at your own pace, and the oral exam (requirement 4) will be offered at the 2013 Bee College. For those that have already completed the training at a previous Bee College, the final oral exams are held Friday morning (see registration form).
