1 Trimble County Cooperative Extension Service Newsletter - March 2015 Agriculture and Natural Resources Family and Consumer Sciences 4-H Youth Development Cooperative Extension Service Trimble County 43 High Country Lane Bedford KY Ph (502) Fax: (502) Fruit Planting and Pruning Time is Here Spring is a great time to plant a wide variety of fruit trees and small fruits in the home garden/landscape. It is also the proper time to prune fruit trees and some small fruits. The Trimble County Extension Office has a wide selection of publications available for budding gardeners and the seasoned gardener too. If you are interested in growing your own fruit at home or vegetable garden, ask for any of the following free publications: Kentucky Backyard Apple Integrated Pest Management Manual (IPM-9) Growing Peaches in Kentucky (HO-57) Home Fruit Variety Recommendations 2012 (HortFact-3003) Growing Blackberries and Raspberries in Kentucky (HO-15) Strawberry Production in Kentucky (HO-16) Growing Highbush Blueberries in Kentucky (HO-60) Growing Grapes in Kentucky (ID-126) Home Vegetable Gardening in Kentucky (ID-128) Tree fruits and small fruits have differing degrees of management necessary to grow a successful crop. Fruits and vegetables of all kinds are part of a group of foods that we call functional foods. Functional foods provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition. Fruits and vegetables also possess plant chemicals called antioxidants which aid in reducing the risk of cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and help lower cholesterol. So, you see gardening might just be good for you in more ways than one. For more information on growing fruits or gardening, call the Trimble County Extension Office at Free Soil Testing The Trimble County Cooperative Extension Service offers free soil testing. Bring in a sample of your garden or fruit tree soil to get a reading on the current nutrient levels and recommendations for your garden to prosper.

2 Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources Emerald Ash Borer Control Program March 10, :00 p.m. If you have white or green ash trees in your home landscape, like I do, don t miss this program on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 on Emerald Ash Borer (EXB) control. The program will start at 6:00 p.m. at the Trimble County Cooperative Extension Service office. I will also demonstrate how to apply EAB insecticides on ash trees in the extension office landscape. So that I will have enough publications on hand, please call the Trimble County Extension office at (502) to register for the program. Getting Rid of Pesky Moles March 17, :00 p.m. I am getting to the point I hate moles. Well, I never really liked them either. Why can t they just leave me alone? If you live near the woods like I do, you may have mole problems from time to time. This past fall, part of my yard looks like a mine field because of one, single solitary mole. If you want to know more about ridding your landscape of moles, plan to be at the Trimble County Extension Office on Tuesday, March 17 th at 6:00 pm. I ll talk about the mole life cycle, when they are most active and how to best manage your mole problem. Call the Trimble County Extension Office by March 16, 2015 at to register for this program. Beginning Beekeeping Saturday, March 21, :00 2:00 p.m. $10 registration fee, payable to Oldham County Extension. Lunch is included. Demonstration Categories include: Animal Science Bread Clothing/Sewing Crafts and Photography Health Home Environment Horticulture Foods Performing Arts Safety Science and Natural Resources Science, Engineering and Technology Shooting Sports Team Demonstrations For more information or to register for the contest please phone the Extension Office at PARENTS!!! Help young people be good digital citizens Social media has made it easier than ever to share information with a large group of people, but that ability comes with a lot of responsibility. Oftentimes, young people can get into trouble on social media by sharing too much private information or by using the anonymity the web affords to be verbally abusive to others. In 4-H, we teach young people how to be good citizens. Those principles of good citizenship should extend into the digital world. A recent study conducted by a University of Kentucky family scientist with middle school and high school students in Paris Independent Schools revealed that the amount of time that young people spent online increases as they age. So does instances of cyberbullying. Instagram, a social media based on photo sharing, was the preferred way for both groups to share information with their friends. In 4-H, we see a lot of young people using Instagram and Twitter to connect with their friends. Facebook is used too but in a more formal sense. An emerging social media platform is Yik Yak, an app that allows people who live close together to anonymously communicate with each other through short postings or Yaks, much like tweets on Twitter. This app is very popular with college students now and is gaining popularity amongst high school students. As parents, you can ensure your child is being a smart digital citizen by monitoring the social media sites they join. Talk with your young person about thinking critically about the implications of posting information. Things like home addresses, phone numbers and any other identifying information should not be posted on social media sites. Horror stories of extreme cyberbullying are consistently in the news. It s important that your child understands that they should not post information online that might be hurtful to others. Even if they think they are only sharing this information with a close group of friends, it doesn t mean that those friends can t or won t share it with others.
