Accordng to Dr. Joseph E. Schwendeman, vce presdent for admnstratve affars, the buldng s undergong an overhaul that ncludes an update of the mechancal systems, mprovng the buldng to meet codes for fre safety and handcapped access, "The man thng was that we needed to brng the buldng up to code," sad Chad Mddleton, drector of the unversty's physcal plant. Mddleton sad a starway wll be bult on the north end of the buldng, whch was bult n 1952 and renovated n 1970, to elmnate dead-end corrdors. He also sad a sprnkler system wll be nstalled, as wll an elevator and new lghtng system. Schwendeman sad the entre project would cost about $920,000 and s expected to be completed by Aug. 1. Nneteen faculty and staff members wth offces n the buldng have been temporarly relocated n Mattox Hall, whch wll be returned to housng ths fall. Dr. Doug Reynolds, an assstant professor of natural scence, sad he prefers hs new locaton. " would lke to stay here," he sad, ctng ncreased prvacy and offce space. Each faculty member has a prvate offce n Mattox Hall. He sad there s also adequate parkng, somethng not avalable near hs old offce. 25 spaces n the O'Donnell lot have been converted to staff spaces. Progress photo/mke Morrs sdewalk besde Unversty's black enrollment declnng By Keth Howard Managng edtor Black enrollment at the unversty - whch peaked at 961 n has declned to 762 ths academc year. Of the 628 faculty, only seven are black. "There are several reasons why the numbers are decreasng. t could be because of the amount of funds t takes to pay for college or t could be the number of black faculty members employed here," sad Gregory Jones, presdent of the black student unon. Jones, a senor elementary educaton major from Jackson, Mss., sad t s easer for black students to relate to black faculty members. "There's just a bg cultural dfference for a freshman black student to deal wth at the begnnng of the semester." Teachng award may be dropped By Jame Baker Assstant news edtor The Excellence n Teachng Award Commttee recommended to the members of the Faculty Senate last Monday that the award be dscontnued. Ths award has been gven for the last 10 years to promote and recognze excellent teachers. t was decded by members of the faculty senate to examne a 1985 report on the award before decdng to dscontnue t. The processs for selectng the recpents for the award s one of the factors the report addresses. Currently, recpents of the award are chosen by a vote of the students and faculty, and alumn from the last three years. Ballots are maled to alumn and faculty whle students are able to vote for several days n all of the classroom buldngs. Accordng to the crtera set up by the commttee, a faculty member must receve votes from at least two of the three votng groups. The fnal selecton of the award s determned by an Alumn Selecton Commttee composed of fve faculty members who are chosen at random. Accordng to Fredonna Cox, char of the Excellence n Teachng Award Commttee, the members of that commttee felt there were several reasons why the award should be dscontnued. Cox sad an extremely low level of partcpaton by students, faculty and alumn was one of the consderatons. Dr. Patrca Costello, char of the commttee last year, sad that of 6, 768 ballots sent to alumn, only 543 were returned (See SENATE, Page A-6) He sad some black students are rased n a predomnantly black neghborhood and t's hard for them to come to the unversty and room wth a whte roommate. He sad they may adjust to t through tme and they may not. Twenty years after the death of cvl rghts leader Martn Luther Kng, whose brthday s beng celebrated wth a natonal holday Monday, some n- dvduals are concerned wth the numbers of black students and the percentage of black faculty. Paul Coakley, presdent of the Madson County/Rchmond branch of the NAACP. sad the unversty should do more to ncrease black faculty and enrollment "We are all concerned about the low representaton of see BLACK, Page A-6 McCreary Hall to convert to faculty offces By Phl Bowlng nsghts edtor The 34 resdents of McCreary Hall wll be lookng for new housng n the fall due to a unversty decson to convert the buldng to academc offces. n a meetng held Monday. Lsa Port, a 23-year-old junor recreaton and park admnstraton major from Oak Park, sad the worst part of the decson would be the loss of a unque faclty. "You were able to study here anytme, whch you mght not have on a full floor and the actvtes were desgned to ft the needs of older students," she Sandra Ballew, a junor marketng major from Lexngton, sad she came away from the meetng feelng dsheartened. "He just came n and bascally 'Ths s how you have to lve,' and gave us no opton," she " thnk t would have been better f they would have surveyed the resdents and asked us how we felt and where we would lke to lve before a decson was made," Ballew "The unversty cannot afford to let me operate wth empty rooms," Tedrow Snce Fall 1986, the unversty has been operatng below current capacty of 6,608 bed-spaces. Depot decson already made Some people mght argue that the Army's crucal decson on whether to move the dangerous chemcal weapons from Madson County or burn them on-ste could be lke a scene from the daytme seres Superor Court. Because n Superor Court, the judge's decson on the cases heard has already been determned before the ltgants enter the courtroom. Sound famlar? Several Madson Countans would say the decson on the nerve gas ssue has already been made and the Army s smply prolongng the development of the ncnerator. A recent report released by the Army stated t would seek to burn the weapons on- ste rather than move them. However, certan congressmen as well as ctzens have combned forces to sway the Army's decson. t s hoped ther efforts have not been n van. Regardless of what route the Army takes, there wll be an extreme amount of anmosty from all opposng sdes, and t's crucal that the Army delves deeper before makng a decson. Snce the release of a statement by concerned members of Madson County whch states the Army should transport the 70,000 weapons by ar, the Army needs to reevaluate ts decson and move the chemcal weapons. Letters and columns wll ha prnted n accordance wth avalable space. There's always room for a pretty face Prnt journalsts have long amused themselves by chucklng at ther colleagues n the televson busness who constantly must be concerned wth the vsual aspect of ther jobs. Whle a prnt journalst can arrve on the scene, notebook n hand, and begn work mmedately, the televson reporter must allow tme to set up cameras and make sure that the story s n fact not only newsworthy, but also wll lend tself to good pctures. We also observe the fact that whle there are many very good reporters n televson, there are many others who hold ther oncamera jobs smply because they have a pretty face. t was wth these thngs n mnd that settled nto my seat to watch "Broadcast News," the flm about the televson news Wld moose chase Mke Marsee busness now playng, as they say, n theaters everywhere. The move s set around the Washngton, D.C. news bureau of a major network, where producer Jane Crag (played by Holly Hunter) and reporter Aaron Altmann (Albert Brooks) subscrbe to.the theory that people should advance n ther jobs only because they are good at what they do. As they preach ther belefs to each other and anyone else who wll lsten, they are appalled by the rapd advancemept of Tom Grunck (Wllam Hurt), a former sports reporter who s clmbng the ladder of success largely due to hs good looks and despte hs lack of knowledge and ablty. Grunck soon manages to earn the support of the network's top brass, seemngly provng agan that a pretty face wll go a long way n televson news. But t sn't always that way. There s also room n journalsm - both prnt and broadcast - for those who are really dedcated to ther jobs. Crag s just such a person n ths move. Here s a woman so bossy that she gves drectons to cab drvers to keep them out of traffc jams. The sngle most mportant thng n ths woman's lfe s producng qualty televson news. Qualty s good, but consumng yourself wth your work to the pont that t s the only thng that matters can be dsastrous. have seen t happen to people older than me n several vocatons, and sadly enough, have seen t happen to myself at tmes. f ths move offers a lesson to those of us who are young and about to dve headlong nto a career, t s that there s always more than one sde to lfe. No matter what becomes of prmary mportance to us, there should always be room to put t asde for a whle and escape to somethng else. Escapng sn't qute that easy, but t surely offers a much better chance of retanng your santy. Long holday creates cabn fever So many people have asked me, "How, was your Chrstmas? "and expected to hear the very well-rehearsed, common reply of, "Just fne. And how was yours?" But don't mndlessly recte these words. fgure f someone s gong to exhaust enough energy to ask, 'm gong to make t worth the effort by tellng the truth: "t was too long." t was great to get away from school and ts pressures and enjoy the yuletde season wth famly and frends. But after ths Chrstmas, 'm a belever n that t s possble to have too much of a good thng. A classc example - my mother. Even wth a broken leg, she managed to survve the search for the one gft wanted more than any other for Chrstmas -- a Wld Puffalump. My request may have seemed rdculous, but she fulflled my wsh anyway. The poor woman couldn't walk (stll can't) but somehow, that favorte dsh mentoned n passng would be ready for me when came home from work. Sounds great, doesn't t? t was great but there was a small problem. Just as any other college student, ' ve grown accustomed to dong as please especally when 'm at school. But when 'm home, t's a dfferent story because there are four other people have to take nto consderaton before makng any plans. Beng the concerned mother mne s. she can't sleep at nght untl she knows her chldren are all safely home. found t dffcult to suddenly drop my late-nght habts, so Mom spent many nghts watng to hear the loud musc echong n the garage from the car as parked t. Breakng curfew every nght went out ddn't make my mother a very happy camper. Even before she could grll me as to why was late, had blurted out the usual excuses of forgettng the tme and havng car trouble, and had sworn 'd never be late agan. We both knew that was a le. So t contnued. My mother would bend over backwards to provde whatever wanted, and would contnue to dsregard her wshes by stayng out late and then tryng to sleep late the next day. So became more and more aggravated because my mother wouldn't let me do whatever tckled my fancy, and she Sght for sore eyes Yes. the type n ths week's edton of the Progress s a bt larger than n prevous ssues. 've fnally realzed that our troubles occurred because we're both dfferent people. We're both used to the way the other was three years ago. t's not that 've grown apart from my mother. t's just that 've grown whle away from her. 've been n Rchmond so long that the changes 've gone through don't affect her untl decde to journey home after several months of beng away. Senate plans lobbyng effort By Donna Pace News edtor Several trps to Frankfort, phone conversatons wth Kentucky representatves, and handwrtten letters to government offcals le ahead for the leaders of the unversty Student Senate ths sprng. Student senators are begnnng the semester wth lobbyng strateges, n an attempt to persuade legslators not to cut the state budget for hgher educaton n the 1988 General Assemby, whch began Jan. 5. Accordng to Davd Nusz, senate presdent, lobbyng efforts and the Advocates for Hgher Educaton Rally scheduled for Feb. 26, wll be the man focuses of hs co-workers, though unversty matters wll not be neglected. When asked f he felt the two players were reactng out of anger or btterness, Cox sad, "What else would you attrbute t to?" Cox sad Calhoun had become physcally ncapable of partcpatng and decded to qut because of t. Accordng to unversty Athletc Drector Donald Combs, the nvestgaton, whch was beng conducted by personnel wthn the athletc department, s now n new hands. Ths contradcts what many Madson Countans as well as unversty professor Dr. Ors Blackwell have recommended. Accordng to Blackwell, char of the envronmental health department, t would be "sheer folly to buld an ncnerator n Madson County." Blackwell along wth Douglas Hndman, Robert Menofee, Wllam Mtchell and Bob Tussey released a report that recommends the Army transport the weapons by ar to Tooele, Utah for dsposal. At ths locaton, the Army s already constructng a mllon dollar ncnerator, he "The Army has ndcated they apprecate the work and effort put nto the project and they are treatng t very serously...," Blackwell There are approxmately 70,000 agng VX and GB nerve gas rockets stored at the Rchmond depot. Blackwell says there are a number, of reasons why the faclty n Rchmond should be treated dfferent from the other facltes. There are only 1.6 percent of the natons entre stockple of outdated chemcal weapons stored n Madson County. But what about the' cold weather? At frst glance the odds seem too enormous to challenge, and you want to nestle back n that warm bed wth your Oreos and pzza and say "Why bother? 'll wat tll sprng." t's smple enough to fgure out that the more weght you gan the more you have to lose, and another month of sedentary lvng and overeatng wll lead to weght gan. Ftness n general s not acheved overnght. t s a gradual process. f you're not sure of your level of physcal ftness, help s avalable. Hal Holmes and Paul Motley, both professors of physcal educaton, offer a testng program so exercsers and nonexercsers may gauge ther ftness level. The testng program s free and evaluates restng heart rate, blood pressure, body composton, flexblty and abdomnal strength. The test s for men and women. Untl last year, the test was offered only for men. The program has an early mornng and an afternoon sesson and conssts of heart rate and blood pressure tests, measurement for percent of body fat, a st and reach test for flexblty, and a st up test. Testng begns after Sprng Break and anyone tested wll be asked to come back at the end of the semester to take a oneand-a-half-mle test and a bench press test to measure ther progress. Holmes sad the testng program s very much healthrelated and s n fact called the Adult Health-Related Ftness Testng Program. He sad that he and Motley wll provde advce on ftness f partcpants request t. After the program has concluded a computer prnt-out lstng each person's results and hs or her relaton to the others tested s maled to those who partcpated. The prnt-out ncludes ftness norms for ndvdual sex and age group* n conjuncton wth the program, Holmes and Motley also produce a newsletter wth tps and advce on such concerns as ADS, dabetes, the common cold and blood pressure. Accordng to Holmes and Motley, exercsng n wnter s dffcult because few people have exercse equpment n ther homes. For those who don't have nhome equpment and don't want to spend money on exercse classes, Alumn Colseum, Weaver Health Buldng and the Begley Buldng are open at varous tmes for free swm, basketball, racquetball, walkng and other ndoor sports. Motley sad an exercse program s more enjoyable and easy to mantan f two or more people do t together. Ths way each person looks forward to the sessons and feels an oblgaton to the other. Some aerobc (meanng wth a lot of oxygen) actvtes recommended by Holmes and Motley for the wnter months are fast walkng, joggng, swmmng and rdng a home exercse bcycle f one s avalable. Two thngs begnners should remember, accordng to Holmes and Motley, are physcal mprovements through exercse take tme, and exercse s only worthwhle f t s done correctly. Dors Gray, a certfed aerobcs nstructor, teaches a hgh-energy, free-style aerobcs class at Rchmond Parks and Recreaton on North Second Street. The class, as advertsed, s sad to have taken the ouch out of aerobcs and left the fun n. Gray sad ths s done by ncludng aerobcs for non-dancers - aerobcs that are easy to follow and don't requre much stress on the lmbs. Gray sad she tres to always have at least one foot on the ground and not to pound the legs too hard. The class s $2 per class and meets from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Gray sad attendance when the class begns n the wnter months s always hgh because so many people have resolved to lose weght n the new year. Gray sad exercsng n the wnter s partcularly dffcult, however, because people's moods are generally not as good durng bad weather. "Our moods are more upbeat when the sun s shnng," she Gray sad the nactvty assocated wth bad moods slows metabolsm and causes people to become lethargc. "We tend to just hbernate lke bears," she Ths nactvty also causes people to eat more. "We eat out of boredom n the wnter," Gray Though Gray encourages people to attend her classes, she offers alternatves for tmes of bad weather when roads are not ft for travel. Constant actvty of any knd s recommended, whether t be housework, dancng or walkng up and down stars. Any of these actvtes should be contnued at least 20 mnutes. Gray also recommends stretchng and bendng to keep the muscles n shape. Class gves daly scare, suspense By Amy Caudll Features edtor Every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., students n COM 250 have the opportunty to get scared. No, not by tests or term papers or eccentrc professors, but n the usual way - by horror moves. For the second semester, the Department of Mass Communcatons s offerng flm genre courses. The genre ths semester s horror flms, and students of any major may take the course as an electve or just for fun. Don Can, a professor of mass communcatons who teaches the course, sad there are more than 60 students enrolled n the class, whch meets n Room 108 of Crabbe Lbrary. " have no dea what ther reacton s," sad Can, who tred the frst day of class to squelch the dea that the course s just about watchng moves. Though Can wll be showng nearly 30 horror flms n the course of the semester, he stressed that students wll have to delve deeper than the obvous nto the nature of the flms. The flms wll be shown n chronologcal order n terms of when they were produced, begnnng wth "The Cabnet of Dr. Calgar," whch was flmed n 1919, and endng wth the present. Can sad many students have no knowledge of older horror flms, whch offer a lot of aesthetc pleasure through ther subtle mages and use of color. Most students are famlar only wth the horror moves of recent years, he "That's very, very tny porton of the hstory of horror flms," Can Progress photo/mke Morrs Donald Can teaches COM 250, a flm course. Can sad the course wll examne use of color n the composton of flms, how to communcate horror n flm, foregn flm concepts, symbolsm and flm hstory. Flms from France and Japan and others by foregn drectors wll be shown to broaden students' knowledge of foregn flms. The class syllabus descrbes the overall purpose of the class as makng "students more vsually orented and more aware of the technques whch can be used n moton pctures, televson, etc." Some well-known flms that wll be shown are "Dracula," "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," "Creature from the Black Lagoon," "Psycho," "Rosemary's Baby," "The Exorcst" and "Alen." Can sad a move wll be shown nearly every class perod, wth the begnnng of each perod beng dedcated to dscusson of the prevous flm and lecture by Can, and the last of the perod beng gven to the vewng of the flm. Can sad he would lke to see students explore and see what's behnd the obvous scares of horror moves. "Many of them are extremely subtle thngs. The kds may not recognze them as horror flms, even." Can Older flms lke "Psycho," Can sad, have lttle or no volence or gore but merely suggestons of these elements. n fact, Can sad, most hstorcal horror flm makers tred to avod the use of "blood and guts" n ther flms. Can sad all horror flms are full of symbolsm, and the most common symbols found n these flms are death and sex. These symbols recur regularly n a chronologcal study of horror flms, Can Psychologsts have found that the vewng of horror moves can be therapeutc because t helps people vent ther negatve feelngs and come to terms wth the world and wth death, Can Another theory s that monsters represent humans and vewers can see themselves n ther most negatve and most horrble state. Can sad vewers externalze ther fears onto the screen and are able to control them.. "We're lookng at ourselves on that screen," sad Can. The course wll deal wth these deas, as well as Freudan sexual psychology, dreams and relgon and how they are presented n horror flms. Can sad the next flm genre class may focus on muscal comedy. "We're just really excted about ncreasng our membershp because we are lookng for strength n qualty as well as quantty," she One aspect of Ph Mu's rush that s dfferent ths year s the partcpaton of other sorortes and fraterntes as well. Pope sad delegates from each sororty and fraternty as well as PanheUenc offcers attended the frst ntal meetng of rush and the rush party celebraton. She added ther role was "to be present as a support system of the entre Greek system as a whole." The delegates also encouraged the rushees to take the opportunty to jon Ph Mu, she Karen Crss, presdent of Ph Mu, sad the delegates have worked out very well. "They have shown the grls what the \ V S Greek system has to offer. Ph Mu really apprecates what PanheUenc and FC are dong. That just shows how strong the Greek system s on ths campus." Crss sad so far rush has been successful. Eght grls have pledged ths semester. "We're very pleased wth the outcome. 11 B-4 - The Eastern Progress, Thursday, January 14, 1988 Arts/ Entertanment Terry to lecture on 'Bloods' n a nutshell... Wallace Terry: BLOODS 7:30 p.m. Tuesday Brock Audtorum By Jennfer Feldman Arts edtor Wallace Terry, author of "Bloods," a compellng account of the black solders' experences durng the Vetnam War, wll present a lecture/slde show at the unversty based on hs natonal best-seller. Though blacks comprsed only about 10 percent of Amerca's populaton, black solders accounted for more than 23 percent of Amercan fatales at the begnnng of the war. Through hs mult-meda presentaton, Terry, an award-wnnng author, televson personalty, lecturer and journalst who covered the war for two years for Tme magazne, wll offer nsghts nto the experences of black solders, who fought for the country durng a perod of racal unsettlement. Terry was a frst-hand wtness to the Cvl Rghts Movement as a reporter for The Washngton Post. As a reporter coverng the war, he notced a change n the once common ground of fghtng for one's country. For the frst tme, blacks were beng fully ntegrated n combat and leadershp postons. However, the black careersolder was dyng at a greater rate, proportonately than Amercan solders of other races. Replacng them were black draftees, many of them flled wth a new sense of black prde and purpose. They spoke out agnst the dscrmnaton they encountered on the battlefelds. Thus, two wars actually raged on: the Vetnam War and the Photo by Maro Ruz Wallace Terry Racal war. "Bloods," the name black solders durng the war called themselves, s an oral hstory of the Vetnam War n the words of 20 black Amercan solders. t s more than just a story of any partcular race durng the war, however. t revves the very personal feelngs of all men at war. Terry's presentaton wll nclude a one-hour lecture on hs book and a 20-mnute Dolby stereo slde show, whch ncludes actual pctures and voces from the battlefront. Many of the voces on the tape were on the Motown documentary "Guess Who's Comng Home," haled by The Washngton Post as "a superb combnaton of voces so real, so ntense that you can almost smell and see as well as hear Vetnam." Addtonally, Terry has produced documentary flms on black Marnes for the U.S Marne Corps and served as a race relatons consultant to a commandng general of the U.S. Ar Force n Europe. More recently, he has been a rado and televson commentator for CBS, "Post- Newsweek," "The Evenng Assocaton" and "n the Publc nterest." Beholder's debut to be released By Jennfer Feldman Arts edtor The band bears the classc heavy metal look: long, unkept har, spandex-lke clothng, chans, spked wrst and neck collars, and outlandsh makeup. Yet accordng totommy Valentne, lead snger for the local group Beholders whose debut album s due to be released late ths month, the smlarty stops wth the stage presence. "We're really not nto t to pck up grls and party lke most bands: we're really nto our musc," he Former unversty students, Valentne, 19, and Kenny Rotskk, 22, comprse the only permanent members of the band, although two other studo muscans, Ross Howard and Scott Leedy, appear on the group's frst album, "The Unforseen." Despte the aggressve appearance, Valentne descrbed the band's style as "defntely dfferent." The album's sx songs deal wth serous ssues and problems rather than partyng, he sad, whch explans why, though a local band, they have not played the local bar crcut. "When we do play somewhere, t won't be Rchmond. People n Rchmond are party orented. We talk about serous ssues," he Those ssues nclude nuclear war, dsbelef n God. the lfe of a Vetnam solder and lost love. Though not unque themes. Valentne asserts the album has a totally dfferent sound. "Our style s such that you wouldn't really compare t to other bands," Valentne The local group Beholders wll release ts debut album late ths month. Just as ndcated, "The Unforseen" has a sound unque unto tself. Hgh-ptched vocals carred by aggressve, punchng nstrumentals create a new sound, whch the group terms "progressve heavy metal." "Some people call t thrash heavy metal, but that name gves the wrong mpresson," Valentne Valentne sad the band's mage s an ndcaton of ts unformty. "t's a very organzed unformty... where everyone looks as one - all whte makeup, red lps and black eyelner - not four people, one whole," he Beholders has amed hgh wth the release of ts frst album. So hgh, n fact, that f local fans want to hear them Uve, they may have to travel qute a dstance to do so. "We're not gong to play n bars. We're more concert orented. 've been n those bands (that play n bars): you get nto a rut where you make just enough to make t to the next bar," Valentne Valentne and Rotskk sad they hoped "The Unforseen" helps them to get sgned wth a major record label. "Everyone uses ther own way to get to the top - ths s ours," Valentne Both Valentne androtskk are seasoned performers, havng been n bands before Beholders. n 1985, they were members of a group whch won the Battle of the Bands, a local contest for regonal muscal groups. As a student of the unversty, Rotskk was a member of the marchng band. "The Unforseen" wll be avalable exclusvely at Record Smth n Rchmond and most Lexngton outlets. WZZA t FREE. 13 B-6 -- The Eastern Progress, Thursday, January 14, 1988 Sports Colonels go to 2-0 n OVC By Brent Mster Sports edtor At the rate the Morehead State Unversty Eagles were scorng ponts late n the second half, t appeared the unversty men's basketball team would lose ts frst Oho Valley Conference game. Morehead fell to 4-7 and 0-1. "t seems lke one bad play at the end of the game keeps us from wnnng," sad Morehead frst-year Coach Tommy Gather. That one bad play came wth 32 seconds on the clock wth the score n favor of the Colonels. Morehead guard Tony Curry was whstled for an over-andback volaton on an n-bounds pass at mdcourt. Only a 55.6 percent free-throw shooter, the unversty's Bobby Collns was then fouled and sank both ends of a one-and-one wth 24 seconds remanng. Morehead's Derrck Davs, who had already scored 16 ponts n the second perod, msfred on a three-ponter. The Colonels rebounded, and McGll was ntentonally fouled, gvng hm two free throws, whch he mssed wth sx seconds left. The ntentonal foul also gave them possesson of the ball, but McGll caught the n-bounds pass on hs knees, got up wthout drbblng and was called for walkng. Progress photo/mke Marsee Ben Phllps grabs a rebound Monday nght. Lookng to te t up wth a three-ponter, the n-bounds passer threw to Damn Hale who mssed a harmless 15-footer. "He (Hale) was supposed to set a pck for me, and was supposed to break open to the corner and shoot the threeponter," Davs Davs never got open because of Collns' defensve pressure. " knew they were gong to go to hm," sad Collns, who recorded season hghs of 16 ponts and 10 rebounds. "We weren't gong to let them shoot a three-ponter," sad unversty basketball coach Max Good. The home team bult on a halftme lead that grew to on a Collns layup. Then Davs, from outsde, and Hale, from nsde, took over. 15 _ B-8 -- The Eastern Progress. Thursday, Track season to open By Brent Rsner Sports edtor The second floor of Alumn Colseum became an ndoor track of sorts for the unversty women's track team as they prepare to enjoy a new season. To do that, they must be fortunate enough to stay relatvely njury-free lke last year's team dd. "We thought a lot (of last year) was luck.'' sad assstant track coach Tm Moore. "We were healthy the whole year, whch was very mportant. f we don't have any njures, we'll have an excellent year." Moore's squad wll have to work hard to repeat what was accomplshed last year when 13 school records were broken and sx team members qualfed for NCAA natonal champonshp competton. Saturday the team wll challenge the Unversty of Tennessee n a dual meet n Knoxvlle. Tenn., n ts frst outng. The last casualty, Grace Brown, chose not to partcpate ths season. She was part of the 220-meter shuttle hurdle relay team that set a world record at the Hardee's nvtatonal ndoor track and feld meet last February. Chrstne Snow and Lsa M alloy, who ran 1-2 n the Oho Valley Conference cross country champonshp n the fall, wll be counted on heavly n the dstance runnng events. Snow owns the school record n the 3,000-meter and the twomle runs, whch she set last year. But sprntng and hurdlng may well be the trademark of ths team wth All-Amercan Jacke Humphreys leadng the way. At that tme, the unversty men's basketball team wll square off wth the Murray State Unversty Racers. That game s the frst of fve natonal telecasts of OVC games by that network durng ths season. What dd the OVC do to fnally deserve ts place on the arways ths tme? Glad you asked. The conference, led by Commssoner James E. Delany, struck an nterestng deal wth the cable sports programmng gant that may hurt the OVC fnancally. Accordng to Delany, the conference wll pay the network for producton costs n exchange for four mnutes of advertsng tme durng the game that wll be sold. Accordng to unversty Athletc Drector Donald Combs, those producton costs would add up to nearly $100,000 for all fve contests. Delany sad t would be good f the OVC could just break even and that the value of the televson exposure would help market the partcpatng schools. He also sad just gettng the advertsng sold could be rsky, and t appears that s the case. Just last week no one at Creatve Sports Marketng, the frm handlng the deal, would say whether the four mnutes of advertsng had even been sold. So Delany and the OVC may not break even after all. normally don't watch college basketball at the mdnght hour unless t mght nvolve the naton's No. 1 team. How many people n these Unted States wll actually tune n to be entertaned wth OVC Bleacher preacher Brent Rsner hoops? Few. suspect. Now, people n the Pacfc and Mountan tme zones wll receve the game n prme tme at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. respectvely. Correct he f 'm wrong, but the West has not been a recrutng supermarket for any school n the conference, and most lkely, never wll be. The people n the East who would be the most receptve to ths telecast probably wll be n dreamland by tp-off, or they may guess t's another one of those replays and turn the channel. 'm not sayng the OVC doesn't deserve televson coverage because t was the most mproved basketball conference a year ago. t just seems to be a waste of money and an nconvenence for the players and coaches to schedule games for mdnght. f there are more televson contracts negotated n the future, the conference should carefully measure the sze of the hole t could fall nto. Evans wns wth TKO Progress staff report Unversty student Shawn Evans remans undefeated at 10-0 as he stopped Lamont Jackson at the Contnental nn n Lexngton Dec. 5.
