Your learning environment includes Wales Farm, situated on the College s 850-hectare estate. Wales Farm has a range of enterprises including beef, lamb, pig and dairy, winter wheat, winter barley and organic spring barley, winter oilseed rape and maize. You will benefit from learning in the College s brand new dairy production and trials unit. Course structure The course is delivered predominantly through classroom sessions and lectures, combined with a series of laboratory classes, farm visits, guest speakers and practical activities. During the course you will develop a broad knowledge of agriculture through the core modules which include: Beef and Sheep Production, Soil Science, Crop Production Systems and Business Management. Optional modules in the second year enable you to focus on particular areas of interest such as: Organic Production, Conservation Grazing and Practical Agricultural Skills. Graduates have an extensive knowledge of agriculture which equips them for a wide range of careers in agriculture and the land-based industries. Modules Year 1 Introduction to Agriculture Crop Production Systems Beef Production & Management Sheep Production & Management Soil Science Botany Work Placement 1 Farm Animal Health & Welfare Farm Animal Feeding & Nutrition Farm Mechanisation & Machinery Maintenance Ecological Methods Business Management Year 2 Scientific Developments in Agriculture Agricultural Business Planning & Development Agriculture & the Environment Grassland Management & Forage Production Project 2 Work Placement 2 Dairy Cow Management Statistics Principles of Organic Production & Management Practical Agricultural Skills Career Development Agricultural Field Trip Conservation Grazing Following the birth of my son, I realised the last thing on earth I wanted to be was the stereotypical single mum. I wanted a proper career. With the support of my family, I enrolled on the Foundation Degree at Plumpton College. The College is friendly and local, so this fitted in with my childcare arrangements. I grew up in a town and no-one in my family ever farmed. It was a complete contrast to everything I had ever known but after looking around the local area for work experience (which has to be completed as part of the course), I realised pretty quickly that the agricultural industry is crying out for young people, and there is definitely work available if you are prepared to work hard. I accepted a work placement on a local dairy farm and when I graduated in the summer, the farm kept me on as a relief milker. This works really well for me; although it involves early mornings, it allows me to spend time with my family. I am keen to encourage other people to think about an agricultural course at Plumpton College. Agriculture is a really exciting and vibrant industry to work in. It s always changing and working towards better solutions for the future. There are great jobs to be had out there and opportunities galore. It s the perfect job for people who like to spend time outdoors, care for animals and work well in a team. You can also opt for choices which include Animals in Education, Wildlife Conservation, Immunology and Applied Animal Health. The work placement of 4-5 weeks provides a valuable insight into the industry and possible contacts for future employment. Career opportunities include animal welfare, zoological parks, education and animal advisory services. Graduates may also progress to a top-up degree course or to year 3 of an Honours degree course. I applied for the Foundation Degree in Animal Science as I was keen to study with a more hands-on approach, and the Animal Care unit, farm and laboratories at Plumpton College certainly provide this. I was also very attracted to the small class sizes and quiet location. The science modules have broadened my knowledge of how animals bodies work, and how to prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses and diseases. The course has opened my eyes to the vast array of animalrelated industries, many of which I had not previously considered. It has sparked a passion in me for animal health and welfare, and I am keen to pursue a career as a Rodentologist or Education Officer, or to fulfil my dream of opening a guinea pig rescue centre. Ultimately, I would like to educate owners about the importance of providing the correct care for their small animals. I grew up in the US, had already received one degree there and had started a career but wanted something different. I had a job and was doing alright, but wanted to change the direction my life was taking. I wanted to do something I was passionate about and something that brought me enjoyment. I chose Plumpton for its programmes, location and because I believed it would help me reach my new goals. With the only English-taught Viticulture and Oenology programme in Europe I knew that if I could get there and get in I d be a part of something pretty unique and special. Becoming a winemaker was merely a pipedream of mine 2 years ago, but now having been in the programme I am confident that I ll be able to turn that dream into a reality. Plumpton has already provided me with a diverse and well-rounded skill set that will help me stand out when I graduate. With work experience built into the programme I know I can enter my field with confidence and have a leg up on others that may not have had a programme as practical as Plumpton s. I wasn t sure what to expect having come from somewhere a bit different from most university students in England, but I ve felt nothing but acceptance and accommodation since I ve started. It was a bit of a risky choice for me considering my career but I ve never looked back and couldn t be happier with my choice in where to study. Find out more You can get further information about fees and financial assistance offered by the College at All Wine courses FdSc Veterinary Nursing 7,450 per annum 7,600 per annum Part-time fees Most courses can be studied on a part-time basis, lasting twice the duration of a full-time course e.g. two year FdSc would take four years part-time. Part-time students normally study 60 credits a year (half that of full-time students) and therefore the yearly tuition fees are half the full-time fees. Advice for students who already have a university-level qualification In 2009 the government made changes to the way Higher Education is funded. These changes mean that if you already have a degree or higher education qualification and you choose to study another course at either the same or lower level (an equivalent or lower qualification, or ELQ) you will not be eligible for government student support funding such as grants and loans, or for a university bursary. Many of our courses and qualifications (including all Foundation Degrees) are exempt from the ELQ policy. Further information Plumpton College [email protected] 29

32 Entry requirements We want as many people as possible to experience the benefits of a university education. That s why we take into account a number of factors when we set our entry requirements, including any experience that outshines your qualifications. General minimum entry requirements Please take a look at the general entry requirements below but contact us if you have any questions on or [email protected]. For foundation degree and diploma courses Entry requirements usually 120 UCAS points. This is usually: Two A-levels plus at least three GCSE subjects minimum grade C (a selection of AS-levels alone will not be sufficient to meet entry requirements), or A pass in a QAA-approved access course, or BTEC National Cert/Dip extended or PPP. Wine-related courses You must have successfully completed the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits before commencing the course. Veterinary Nursing You require 160 UCAS points from two science A- levels (preferably including Biology) and must have achieved GCSE s in Maths, English Language and a Science subject at minimum grade C. Please see page for further details. An example applicant Stephen is 27 years old. He left school with two A-levels in Media Studies (grade C) and Geography (grade D) and an AS-level in Biology (grade C). He also has 5 GCSEs at grade C in Science (double award), English Language, Mathematics and History. Since leaving school Stephen has done a variety of jobs including gardening, office work and bar work but had not found his vocation until he did some volunteering with the East Sussex County Council Ranger Service. He has applied for the Countryside Management. His UCAS points are calculated as follows: Qualification Grade UCAS points A-level Media Studies C 80 A-level Geography D 60 AS-level Biology C 40 Total UCAS score 180 With his qualifications and experience Stephen would be likely to be offered an unconditional place on the course. For undergraduate degree courses Entry requirements 280 UCAS points. Three A-levels or Extended Diploma plus at least three GCSE subjects minimum grade C or equivalent (a selection of AS-levels alone will not be sufficient to meet entry requirements), or A pass in a QAA-approved access course. Wine-related courses You must have successfully completed the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits. For top-up entry Usually a merit in a relevant Foundation Degree or HND is expected. Other qualifications Admissions tutors accept many other qualifications which give access to higher education. Applicants with work-based qualifications, such as NVQs, should be able to provide evidence of relevant background knowledge and the ability to study at university level. Whilst individual course requirements vary, all qualifications - UK and international - are considered. International students If you are taking the International Baccalaureate, you will need a minimum score of 26. You will need to have an average IELTS (English proficiency) score of 6.5, with 6.5 in writing. In some cases, if you are an international student and have just completed 12 years of education, you may need to take a foundation course before you can be admitted to a Foundation or Honours degree course. International students are only accepted if they hold a visa which covers the length of the course. Living in Sussex? If you are living, studying or working in Sussex you may be entitled to guaranteed offers or interviews for certain subjects providing you have the relevant qualifications. For school and college students, to find out if your school or college is part of the progression accord agreement visit: Further information Plumpton College [email protected]
