3 Meet: Obed Brew Programme Leader International Nursing and Healthcare studies As a student Obed studied at University of Hertfordshire, Royal Postgraduate Medical School Hammersmith Hospital, and Imperial College London. He has been teaching, conducting research and writing about genomics healthcare, human reproduction, diabetes, long-term conditions, and behaviour modification and has enjoyed passing on his experiences to both home and international students at the University of West London. the genes for histamine receptors are expressed in juxtapositions with the histamine metabolising enzymes Diamine oxidase at the feto-maternal interface during pregnancy. His work has also shown that histamine mediates expression of specific genes whose proteins are associated with protection of human pregnancy, but increasing concentration of the amine triggers a different set of gene expressions that could complicate human pregnancy. Obed s work on diabetes has seen him design and deliver courses for companies like Novo Nordisk UK, several NHS Hospital Trusts in UK including Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and overseas companies such as INSCOL Academy, India. He is also a founding member and current Secretary for the African and Caribbean Diabetes Foundation UK. Obed s main research is on gene expressions in complications of human pregnancy and the use of mobile learning technologies to support learning in practice. His work on complication of human pregnancy was the first to show that 52

BSc (Hons) UCAS Code BL75 One/Two years overview This course has been designed for nurses who qualified outside the UK who wish to top-up their existing Diploma of Higher Education to a Degree. The modules will enable you to advance your knowledge in relation to a range of theories and concepts, which underpin the delivery of high quality and safe healthcare. As part of the course it may be possible to undertake an observation session in a health or social care setting (subject to conditions). Depending on the academic credit associated with your Diploma of Higher Education, you will enter the second or final year of the course. Students undertaking the second year of the top-up course will study the following modules at Level 5: Human Body and Diseases Skills for Critical Appraisal Evidence-based Practice Public Health and Health Promotion. Students undertaking the final year of the top-up course will study the following modules at Level 6: Applied Physiology Research Methods in Health and Social Care Health Promotion Theories Diagnostic Tools in Healthcare Dissertation. Previous students who have successfully undertaken this course have secured employment in key healthcare related positions including: Care home management Lead healthcare practitioner Academic careers, such as tutoring Researcher (Clinical or Academic). overview This course has been designed for applicants with a Foundation Degree or Diploma in Health and Social Care, Medical Laboratory Technology, Physician Assistantship, Dental Nursing, and other lifescience and healthcare related subjects, who wish to convert their Diploma of Higher Education to a degree. The course is designed to help you develop a systematic understanding of health and healthcare, including a coherent and detailed knowledge of physiology, and the management of related pathologies. You will also develop the ability to proactively use knowledge and deploy established techniques of analysis and enquiry to meet the challenges of a changing healthcare environment. * Please note that completion of this course does not lead to NMC registration or give you the right to practice in the UK ** Subject to availability Applied Physiology Research Methods in Health and Social Care Diagnostic Tools in Healthcare Dissertation. Masters One and a half years overview The course will enable you to advance your knowledge in relation to a range of theories and concepts concerning the effective management of the wellbeing and health of individuals and/or groups of people with a healthcare need. It provides a solid academic underpinning to management practices, set in a real work environment. You will receive a thorough grounding in the scientific foundations of health, illness and healthcare and will be taught the most up-to-date concepts in healthcare research methodology and data analysis. work and simulation will be used to emphasise the integration of scientific principles and the use of empirical evidence and validated theoretical models in guiding clinical practice. The course will equip you with the relevant knowledge and skills to better improve and support healthcare decision making. Service Design and Improvement in Healthcare Research Methods Genes, Diseases, Health and Illness Healthcare Research Project. 7 PG Masters Two and a half years MSc Healthcare-Integrated This course is for students who have not completed a degree but wish to undertake a masters in healthcare. The course combines healthcare methodologies with relevant physiological and/or lifescience approaches, to examine the effective management, of the wellbeing and health of people, with a healthcare need. The course combines state-of-the-art healthcare methodologies with physiological and lifescience approaches to deal with relevant clinical issues. Students who have successfully undertaken this course have pursued careers in management and leadership, health service design and development and healthcare enterprise. overview This course is open to applicants who have not completed their first degree but have the academic credits equivalent to a DipHE or HND. In the first year you will study at the equivalent of the final year of an undergraduate degree (Level 6). For the remaining 18 months you will study the masters degree requirement of the course (Level 7). The course will enable you to advance your knowledge in relation to a range of theories and concepts concerning the effective management of the wellbeing and health of individuals and/or groups of people with a healthcare need. It encourages critical exploration of contemporary nursing issues and will assist you in being able to constructively challenge and utilise evidence to enhance practice. Masters One and a half years overview The course has been developed for internationally qualified and registered nurses and focuses on developing a higher level of practitioner, who can proficiently use a sound knowledge base encompassing advanced nursing knowledge and theories, bioscience principles, contemporary evidence, enhanced consultation skills and diagnostic reasoning to conduct holistic assessments.
