1 Placement Partnership Schemes Helping your business grow, helping our students achieve
2 Welcome to the As Head of the I truly believe that this is a very exciting time for Swansea University. The future developments within the University will further escalate growth within the economy, providing clear tangible benefits not just for us and our students, but the businesses and people who live across the region, Wales, the UK and beyond. The, at the heart of Swansea University, clearly plays a central role in these developments; it is a thriving multi-discipline College specialising in Bioscience, Computer Science, Geography, Mathematics and Physics, which continues to provide excellence in teaching and leading edge research as proven by our outstanding 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) results. In line with the growth of the University, notably the new Bay Campus which will act as a gateway to the city, the College is doing likewise; our Swansea vision sets out our contribution to the growth of the regional, national and global economy. Where we add value is through the excellence in research we produce alongside the quality of our students who go on to play their part in becoming the next generation of a highly skilled workforce. The benefits we realised with the placements were always tangible and included cost savings, advances in product development, de-risking new projects as well as finding new employees. We can only recommend the placement scheme to any organisation, irrespective of size whether you are looking for help with new product development or with managing existing IT resources. Dr Gerhard Manogg, Imagitech Limited We have worked with the College of Science placements service on several occasions, and have found it an excellent way of identifying graduate talent to help move our business forward. We tend to start with projects that require resource additional to our core team. Recently we decided to bring in a graduate in computer animation to help us explain how our services work. Within just four weeks we ve been able to create high-quality materials which will aid our marketing and also provide a really useful reference site for our graduate. Martin Brassell, Chief Executive of Inngot, South Wales Our core values Life-long relationships We have a direct commitment to develop lifelong relationships with all our stakeholders - Students and Businesses alike. Cutting edge research and teaching We are committed to driving forward the boundaries of academic research and exploration in each of our five departments, embedding this throughout our teaching practices. Our 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) results are testament to our commitment and ongoing success. Our teaching is delivered by staff focused on giving our students the best possible start of their careers. Industry focused research We continue to build a wide range of relationships with business within Wales and beyond. We have worked with everyone from large multinational corporations through to local microbusiness and new startup companies, as well as a range of national and regional government agencies and bodies. However, to continue to achieve in these areas we cannot act in isolation. If the economy is to truly grow we need to work with key stakeholders to ensure the activity we undertake aligns with what s required in today s employment market. Only by working together will the benefits be wide reaching and inclusive. We need to ensure that students at Swansea University have the right key sector skills and wider work ready attributes to become those people required for today s jobs and today s growing business needs; the very requirements you look for when expanding your workforce. By introducing programmes such as the Placement Partnership scheme I believe we continue on our journey to ensure that what we do here works for our students and for business alike. I hope you find this brochure of use; by reading this you will see how Swansea University and your business can work together through our Placement Partnership scheme in developing a sustainable recruitment strategy for your growing business requirements. There is no better time to work with the University as we continue to take forward our growth plans, and help you take forward yours. Professor Matt Jones Head of the World-class facilities The has invested substantially to ensure we continue to deliver the best teaching and research environments for our students. More recent developments include a 4.2 million investment in state-ofthe-art teaching labs and technical teaching facilities. Employability We aim to help our students achieve the careers they deserve. The University offers a variety of work placements and careers advice through its dedicated careers team, alongside regular careers fairs and alumni networking events to help students find work at the end of their studies. 4 Our Placement Partnerships: discover what our students can do for your business Placement Partnerships are compact type agreements for employers and the University. By taking part in a Placement Partnership the will work directly with your business helping provide you with the best students to work within your organisation. The benefits are much more than just offering a student an industrial placement. Through the Placement Partnership you have direct involvement with potential placement students from their first year ensuring that the student is fully aware of the business and the type of work you will expect them to undertake, alongside ensuring that you are confident that the student will be the right choice for your business. Throughout the programme the University Placement Support Team are on hand to assist with the placement throughout the programme. The Placement Partnership timetable: Prior entry: September to October Year 1 (Oct to August) Year 2 (Oct to June) Year 3 (July through to June) Year 4 (September onwards) Student(s) Student(s) with demonstrable employment experience and strong academic results enrol on the programme Student(s) undertake additional mandatory employability modules Student(s) undertake a week long work experience placement in January. Student(s) undertake additional mandatory employability modules Student(s) undertake a 4 week paid placement. Students undertake the year in industry industrial placement Student returns to complete the final year of the degree programme Swansea University / Approves entry onto the programme. Delivers modules and tracks student progression in line with expectations. Undertakes due diligence checks and risk assessment. Tracks student(s) academic achievement ensuring progression bars are achieved Provides a lead academic staff link, and support staff who maintain regular meaningful contact with the employer and student. Provides support for student assessment post placement Employer Meeting with the University to review student applications, for shortlisting. Takes part in the interview process, and provides a one week work experience opportunity for the student in January Provides a four week paid work placement (either in April or June) Provides a 12 month paid industrial placement Options: Do nothing, or Make a provisional job offer subject to degree completion, or, Make a part-time job offer which could be under taken whilst the student completes their final year of study. How much does it cost? The expectation is that the 4 week paid placement in year 2 and the 12 month industrial paid placement in year 3 are supported by the employer providing the placement. The University will contribute approximately 50% of the cost of the 4 week placement (year 2). It would be expected that the student, whilst working with the employer, will receive remuneration in line with the work they are undertaking. Specific sector based organisations may not be in a position to fully fund a paid placement. Whilst the majority of placements are paid we are keen to work with all organisations from all sectors, some may lack the resources to fully fund a placement. In these individual cases please contact the Employability Manager to discuss other options and support available. What benefit does a Placement Partnership offer the employer? Placements can offer specialist knowledge and an external viewpoint to the business over the duration of the partnership. Placements can support and undertake short or fixed term project work. Placements offer the chance to see potential employees in action before making hiring decisions. Through the placement support provided by the academic there would be a direct link into the College s research capacity. By working with Swansea University there would be opportunities to maximise the collaboration through our marketing channels. An opportunity for the employer to engage and play a role in the module review process by joining the subject specific advisory panel, giving you the opportunity to help shape future curricula. What benefits does a work placement offer a student? Helps students to develop new work orientated skills. Allows students to build confidence and maturity. Supports the student in gaining a breadth of subject knowledge and a platform to apply taught skills. Helps a student grow a CV ready for employment. What is a suitable placement? There is no rule as to what makes a good work placement or not. The type of work carried out by a placement student will vary depending on their strengths and skills and the requirements of your company. An ideal placement would be one which: Provides an opportunity to apply and develop both existing knowledge and also new skills learnt in the workplace. Enables the student to assume an appropriate degree of responsibility. Allows the student to take ownership of their development with guidance from experts. Maximises the student s contribution to the department and organisation. The Placement Partnership timetable sets out a programme to help drive forward business growth over the medium term. However the programme is very flexible; a business can start working with us directly at year 2, or straight away at year 3. If you are looking to provide a Year in Industry placement starting in July, or wish to discuss what options suit you best, please contact the Employability Manager - contact details can be found at the end of this brochure. By working with the at Swansea University our Placement Partnerships are the key to helping your business grow, and our students achieve. 6 7
