3 News and Notes Mosman Rotary Bulletin Colleen Rabu is back at home. Those regular Rotarians who are not members of The Mosman Club have been asked to join by the MC s executive. This was endorsed by our President and seems very appropriate and equitable given their facilities we constantly use.seymour has started the trend! Derek has now completed the 240 kilometres from Porto in Portugal to Santiago in Spain on the famous Camino pilgrims walk dating back to the 9 th Century. No wonder he is smiling! The Club had an away-day on May 21 which will be covered in the next issue Three days, four schools at Mudanjiang. Our Rotary Club has been involved in the Literacy for Girl Child Project in the Mudan Jiang area of Northern China jointly with the Mosman Council since 2002 after both municipalities entered into a sister city arrangement. The program helps girls from families with limited means to assist with school fees and learning material. Schools have been visited regularly by delegations consisting of members from the Club and the Mosman Council. 3
4 This year s RCM delegation consisted of Rotarian Murray Block accompanied by his fiancée Louise, PDG Danny Low and President Dieter Beck. The delegation was led by Mosman Council General Manager Viv May accompanied by Council employee Neil Garrett and member of the community Mr. Steven Wong. Murray is the nominated project manager for this project which is registered for RAWCS contributions. PDG Danny Low, together with the late Jim Reid were the joint originators of the Project. The delegation was extremely well received and accompanied by the Director of External Relations Department, Mr Soo. Ms Xu Jing Qing was again the organizer and guide, ably supported by translators Miss Nicky Sun and Miss Alice Liu. The officials, school principals and teachers of the visited communities and schools, mentioned in detail the full reports on our website, were welcoming beyond our expectations. Families of children which received scholarships were visited in their homes and children accompanied by a parent were guests at banquets following the award ceremonies. In short : 6 scholarships of 2000 RMNB ($330) and 90 stipends of 300 RNMB ($50) were distributed to girl students in 3 schools at Muling (Primary School), Heilin (Primary School) and Ningan (Middle School). The funds for these were jointly provided by RCM and the Mosman Council. Each of the schools received two computers plus accessories, the funds for which were raised by Neil Garrett and employees of the Mosman Council. The visit to the Middle School was a fascinating event. English studies are high on the agenda and several students and teachers were keen to show off their knowledge of English to members of the delegation. On the last day we were given the opportunity to visit the Hearing Centre for children where 30 hearing aids, provided by donors to the Rotary Club of Mosman, were handed over. We were given a tour of the facility and the children were assembled to witness the presentation of the hearing aids. During the visit we could observe some teaching activity and have a look at the classrooms and the dormitory. Of the 32 children aged 2 to 18, around 20 are boarders whose parents live in outlying areas. The hearing aids were presented to the Head Mistress to be later allocated to 4
5 children after the appropriate testing and fitting procedures. The caring nature of the principal and the staff was very noticeable as they assembled them for what must have been a very perplexing event. A project well worth the effort and our contribution was visibly appreciated by the attending officials and staff. (For the full report on the Hearing aids please the Editor.) The ceremonies concluded in each instance with the handover of an Australian flag donated by the Member for Warringah, the Honorable Tony Abbott MP, Leader of the Opposition. All together two successful project and on behalf of the Club I thank and congratulate the Project Managers Rotarian Murray Block and PDG Danny Low for their initiatives and their untiring efforts. Murray Block gave the address to the school at Muling, PDG Danny Low at the Hearing Centre and Dieter Beck at Ningan. Acknowledgements and the names of officials, organisations and those who helped are listed in the detailed reports on the visit. Thanks are due to the organisers in Australia, especially Mr Viv May and his helpers at the Mosman Council and those in China, Mr Soo and his team, the community officials, the principals, teachers, students and our driver who safely navigated us from morning until evening. And also the people of Mudanjiang whose friendliness toward our small group of foreigners could not have been bettered. Summing up help to some who needed help and a lot of goodwill for Australia.
