1 Principal's Message Sister MacNamara School 460 Sargent Avenue Winnipeg, Manitoba R3B 1V Dear Sister MacNamara Families, MARCH 2016 A warm welcome to our new Sister MacNamara families. We hope you are feeling comfortable and making new friends in the school and community. February has been an incredible learning month with many experiences both in and outside our school site. We had special guests for Reading Month Grandmas and Grandpas from Age and Opportunity, kookums, MLA Flor Marcellino, Winnipeg Blue Bomber players and many others. Our students practiced and read books in their first language to younger students. Grades 1-3 students went to an I Love to Read Live event with Ace Burpee, Fred Penner and Mayor Bowman. Everyone had fun!! Festival du Voyageur was brought to Sister MacNamara by Mademoiselle Webb, our French teacher. Students studied the history and created art projects on the theme. Our We Bake for Change Bake Sale was a huge success!! The money raised from the sale was donated to Siloam Mission. The charity was researched and Student Council decided to select this organization for the donation. Thanks to all of you. Our grade sixes have begun preparing for next school year. They spent a morning at Gordon Bell High School in February. They will visit General Wolfe and Hugh John MacDonald in March. We encourage families to attend Open Houses at these schools as well to help make decisions about where students will attend for Junior High School. If you have any questions, please contact your child s teacher or administration. As our term comes to an end, teachers are preparing student report cards to share with you regarding your child's learning. Report cards and appointment times will go home March 8th. Student Led Conferences will be held in the evening of March 10th and all day on March 11th. Notes have been sent home on February 29th for you to choose a Student Led Conference appointment time. Please ensure you attend the meetings with your child s teacher. If you are unable to join us, contact your child s teacher to make another appointment. Alexis Brown, our Community Support Worker, will be off of work until after Spring Break. The Family Room will be open only when we have coverage. Regular programming is expected to resume after Spring Break. We apologize for the inconvenience. We want to extend our congratulations to Aina Corpuz, student and Mr. Denis Roussin, Educational Assistant, who have won Yes I Can awards. We are very proud of you both! School will be closed on the following dates in March: 11th-Student-Led conference, 18th-teacher professional development, 25th-Good Friday holiday and 28th-April 1st SPRING BREAK. 2 February Attendance Awards The following attendance awards were presented at an assembly On Thursday, February 4th Best Attendance Rooms 202 and 129 Winning classes received a classroom trophy, certificate and individual prizes. Most Improved Attendance Rooms 221 and 225 Most Improved Punctuality Rooms 206 and 130 Winning classes received a certificate and a classroom celebration. SKATES AND BADGES at CENTRAL PARK on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4, 2015 for Grades 4-6 This is a free event sponsored by the Winnipeg Police Department. Equipment will be provided if your child does not have skates or a helmet. If your child does have skates and a helmet they can bring to the school the day of the event. Please make sure their equipment is labeled. 5 The Sister Mac Special We Bake For Change A huge thank-you to all of the families that participated in our We Bake For Change bake sale on February 12th. We raised $ for Siloam Mission! Siloam Mission is a humanitarian organization that provides opportunities for people who are affected by homelessness. Thank-you to the staff for their generosity in baking all of cookies and cupcakes!
