1 Kennesaw State University Student Nurses Association The Student Nurses Association (SNA) strives to provide our members with opportunities to serve the community and our school while developing and enhancing their skills as a professional, leader, and future nurse. -Garrett Mead, President Meet the President! Hello everyone! I would like to take a minute to introduce myself. My name is Garrett Mead and I am the new President for the Student Nurses Association (SNA) at Kennesaw State University (KSU). I am very excited to take on this position and what the SNA has planned for the upcoming school year. As a Student Nurses Association, we are here to represent the nursing and pre-nursing students at KSU. The SNA works very hard to make sure that each student is aware and is able to take advantage of all the opportunities that are available to him and her to further develop their skills as a nurse while in school. We depend on your support and I encourage you all to get involved by coming to our monthly general membership meetings and hear from guest speakers; volunteering your time and participating in SNA events; and/or further developing your leadership skills by becoming a board member on the SNA board of directors. The SNA is your voice and we want to hear from you. Please let us know how we can better serve you and help you during your time as a nursing student at KSU. Please feel free to reach out to your SNA board with any of your concerns and/or questions. We would to hear from you. Please also take a moment to stop by our website at to learn more about our organization and what we do. I look forward to working with the SNA and with everyone one of you. -Garrett Mead, President Board Members President Garrett Mead Vice President Andrea Fekete Secretary Luisa Estrada Treasurer Position open Publications and Media Director Hannah Watson Community Health Director Stephanie Way Breakthrough to Nursing Director Keren Beltran Legislative Director Jazz Artley Faculty Advisors Dr. Judy Hold Dr. Barbara Blake GANS Faculty Consultant Dr. Doreen Wagner Visit us at and subscribe to our newsletter Join the KSU SNA Facebook page

This Specialty Spotlight is here to educate you on the responsibilities and education requirements of a specific nursing specialty. Hey, maybe you ll find your next calling! Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse Cardiac catheterization involves inserted a catheter into one of the heart s vessels or in the heart itself. Cardiac Cath lab nurses assist physicians while performing these procedures. Cath lab nurses work with the newest cardiac technology available. Cardiac Cath lab nurses typically have a Cardiac Vascular Nursing Certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Source: NCLEX QUESTION (Answer on the bottom of page 5) Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN The nurse notes documentation of Cheyne-Stokes respirations. On assessment of the client, the nurse expects which of the following? a) Rhythmic respirations with periods of apnea 3 b) Regular rapid and deep, sustained respirations c) Totally irregular respiration in rhythm and depth d) Irregular respirations with pauses at the end of inspiration and expiration

4 KSU SNA Newsletter August 2014 Kennesaw WSON Alumni: Where Are They Now? Have you ever wondered where those impressive seniors ended up? Who: Kait Love, graduated in December 2014 Used with permission from Kait Love What: Neonatal ICU nurse Where: CHOA, Egleston Hospital When: Started as a Patient Care Specialist in January 2013 and transitioned to a nurse after graduation. Why: I ve wanted to be a NICU nurse since Middle School! Typical workday: Assessments; teaching parents how to take care of their baby and their equipment; labs; feedings; sending babies to the OR; lots of NG tubes and ostomy pouches! Hardest part of your job: Watching families struggle and cope Favorite part of your job: Watching our babies reach milestones and getting to celebrate it with their loved ones! Used with permission from Kait Love Even though I am grateful to have a few days off after 4 shifts in a row at the hospital I can't help but sit here and wonder how all my sweet little babies are doing! I definitely have a job where I can't just go home after work and leave it all behind until I come back for my next shift. I just love all those sweet babies and wouldn't trade my job for anything. 4

5 Announcements! New Punch Cards The SNA is implementing a new way to keep track of those coming to SNA meetings and events. We will now be using punch cards (pictured right)! Please come to the General Membership meeting on September 30 th to pick up your card. 10 punches will enter you in the grand prize giveaway drawing! Bring your Student ID to Meetings Please bring your student ID to meetings to scan in! This will be a more efficient way to take attendance than the sign in sheet. New T-Shirt and Sweatshirt Designs Needed! Are you creative, witty, and want to help the SNA? Give us your idea for a new T-Shirt or sweatshirt design! These shirts are a great fundraising opportunity for the SNA, and the best way to show your WSON pride! Feel free to draw, type, or use a t-shirt website to show us your design. The chosen designer will receive their t-shirt for free! NCLEX answer: a) Cheyne-Stokes respirations are rhythmic respirations with periods of apnea and can indicate a metabolic dysfunction in the cerebral hemisphere or basal ganglia. 5
