1 Mission Statement The purpose of the Human Services Student Association (HSSA) is to promote the professional and ethical development of its members; to provide opportunities for interaction between members, faculty, and CSUF administration; to encourage service to individuals, families, and the greater community; to establish friendship with others; and to recognize high achievement in the pursuit of academic excellence.
2 The Advisors of HSSA Kristi Kanel Co-Advisor Welcome HUSR students! Fall semester is here finally and now that we ve all enjoyed a very warm summer we can put on our learning shoes and come back to the reality of classroom work and fun. I am excited to once again be an advisor to HSSA after taking off about 6 years from this privilege. I love working with students and participating in events. I do hope you will all join HSSA and be a part of this awesome club. There are many fun and rewarding community service events, fundraisers, and just plain fun events on the horizon. And don t forget about the end of the year banquet, always a favorite. Feel free to drop in to see me in EC 476 to chat. Mia Sevier- Co-Advisor Mia Sevier is an associate Professor in the Human Services Department. She earned her Ph.D. from UCLA in Clinical Psychology and specializes in issues of culture and couples. She has been teaching in our department for the last six years and regularly teaches counseling, 380, culture, 311, and internship, 396, classes. Mia is a mother of two small children and is married to a fine artist from Spain. She enjoys spending time with her family, going to the beach, and surfing. 3 OCTOBER Page 3 HSSA Executive Board Jennifer Vu President Hi everyone! My name is Jennifer Vu, and I am very excited to be your President this year! I m currently a senior at Cal State Fullerton with a major in Public Relations and a minor in Human Services. I m hoping to take a year off after graduation to do some traveling before heading off to earn my Master s in Nonprofit Administration or Public Policy. Afterward, I plan on pursuing a career in event planning and volunteer coordinating for nonprofits. During my spare time, I enjoy taking my camera out to scenic locations for pictures. I also like biking at the beach, going on nature hikes, and catching up with friends over coffee. I have served on the HSSA board for the past two years as Event Planner, and I am so honored to have the opportunity to return and continue working with the club and its members. I look forward to seeing what wonderful things we will do, and I hope to get to meet many of you personally! Toni McGivern Vice President Hi, my name is Toni McGivern. I will be serving as vice president of HSSA. I am a senior majoring in Human Services and I am graduating in spring of 2012 and plan to continue into Graduate School. I love working with people and my goal is to work as a Marriage, Family therapist (MFT). I am an adult re-entry student. I have 3 children and the youngest is a Junior in high school. My objective is to graduate before her. I love to laugh and have fun. I love music and play the guitar and bass. I like quilting and love to play golf when there is time. I am excited about serving in HSSA and look forward to a great
4 HSSA Executive Board Nancy Truong Treasurer My name is Nancy Truong. I am the Human Services Student Association treasurer. I am a senior this year at California State University, Fullerton. I am majoring in Human Services and minoring in Anthropology. Both of these fields are wonderful in helping me connecting, communicating and helping the community more efficiently and that s what I m most passionate about. My plan is to ultimately receive my masters in counseling and become an academic counselor. Some of my absolute favorite things to do are taking photos, reading, doing yoga, spending time with my loved ones, hanging out at the beach, traveling and eating. I especially enjoy breaks from school, because I get to relax and have time to do what I enjoy most. One of the biggest goals in my life is to travel the world. First and foremost is to see all the wonders of the world, enjoy the sights, food, culture and people. And also to help it, a friend of mine, Jayda once said if I want to change the world, I need to see the world, and I fully believe that. Madai Magana Secretary Hello, my name is Madai Magana and I am a senior with a Human Services major here at Cal State Fullerton. I am the Secretary of the Human Services Student Association and I m very excited for this upcoming year! Whenever I have spare time I like to go to the movies with my son, I also love to travel by car, I like enjoying the views. 5 Page 5 OCTOBER Page 5 HSSA Executive Board Helen Song Membership Coordinator Hello, my name is Helen Song. I am a senior at CSUF. However, I will be staying an extra year to finish my minor. My major is Human services and my focus is on Mental and Substance abuse. I also have a minor in Child and Adolescents Development. I enjoy hanging out with friends but at the same time I love to have sometimes to myself. When I am resting by myself I am usually listening to all kinds of music and catching up on things such as movies and books. I am a person that will try everything that is new. Cynthia Canton Membership Co-Chair My name is Cynthia Canton, I am 20 years old & this will be my third year here at CSUF. I am majoring in Human Services & minoring in Sociology & I have to say that I absolutely love it! I love coming to school & learning new ways to help others & make their lives better. It is very important for me to continue with my education, not only because I want to be a good role model for my little sisters, but also because I know that it is necessary in order to have a career in which I will be improving the lives of others. I plan on going for my Masters in Social Work so that I can become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have always been passionate about helping others & couldn't be more sure of my career choice. Besides school & taking care of others, one of my hobbies includes baking & cake decorating, even though there are times I know I lack the patience for it. Another unique thing about me is my unique love for Winnie the Pooh! I am so excited to be a part of the HSSA board this year & I hope to help others in any way possible, meet some great people, & have lots of fun
6 HSSA Executive Board Yvette Guzman Community Service Coordinator Hi, my name is Yvette Guzman and I am the Community Service Chair for HSSA. I am a fourth year (senior!) Human Services major concentrating in Gerontology and Community Practice/ Administration. My newest hobby is photography; there is just something so neat about capturing a specific moment in time. I truly enjoy volunteering and serving the surrounding community as well our global community in any way that I can. I absolutely love traveling and learning about new cultures. One of my biggest goals is to visit all 7 continents. Five down, two more to go! After college I plan on getting my MSW and eventually opening up my own elder care facility internationally. Sherika Jayawardena Community Services Co-Chair Hi, my name is Sherika Jayawardena. I am majoring in Human Services. I am the community service co-chair for HSSA. This is my junior year. In my free time, I like to swim, shop, and just have some memorable moments in life! I look forward to having a wonderful semester and getting to meet more people. 7 OCTOBER Page 7 HSSA Executive Board Daniela Vaca Fundraising Coordinator My name is Daniela Vaca and I am a double major in Psychology and Human Services. This is my fifth year at Cal State Fullerton. I wanted to become a member of the HSSA because I wanted to become more involved in school before I graduate; I wanted to get to know more students and make my last year a memorable experience. Also, I want to get more involved in the community. My hobbies are going to the movies and dancing (especially salsa, merengue, cumbia). I am really excited to get to know some of you this year and I really hope that it is a fun year! Veronica Prado Fundraising Co-Chair My name is Veronica Prado, I am 27yrs. old and I am a Human Service Major. I am currently a senior at Cal State Fullerton and I am very excited and proud to say that I will be walking this coming May. This is my first year as a member of HSSA and I am very fortunate to be given the opportunity to be in the board as the Fundraiser Co- Chair for HSSA. I am very excited to be working with all board members as I know this will be a great opportunity to network, meet new people, be involved and give back to our community. My goal as the Fundraiser co-chair will be to coordinate and plan as many successful fundraising events for our club. I look forward to all the upcoming and fun times her at Cal State Fullerton.
8 HSSA Executive Board Elizabeth Herrera Public Relations Every morning we have a choice we can begin a new day with a fighting spirit or we can allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by the obstacles that challenge us. I have chosen to use my fighting spirit and my Love for helping others to be put into action and that action is service. My name is Elizabeth Herrera, I am a Human Services major and this, my senior year, I will hold the public relations position in the H.S.S.A club. During my spare time I enjoy doing Zumba and anything related to dancing. I am interested in learning the most I can about the helping field to better serve the people in our community. I plan on obtaining a Masters in Social Work and dedicate my life to serving others. Mia Hernandez Public Relations Co-Chair Hi everyone! My name is Mia and I will be the Public Relations Co-Chair this year. I m a Human Service major and will be graduating this coming spring. My goal after graduation is to receive a MSW and work in an area where I am helping people. Some of my favorite things to do are spending time with my family--which includes my two sons as well as reading and dancing. I joined HSSA because I have always wanted to be involved in school. HSSA was a great place to start and I am very excited to be a part of it; I believe in what they stand for and I know that together we will do great things. I am the first in my family to attend a university and hope to be an encouragement for them and for many to pursue your dreams regardless of the challenges. I am very excited to be part of HSSA. I love working with children, especially those of special needs. I Am Known to Be a Sweet and Young Caring Person who Loves to Help others!.. So, IF There Is Something I Can Help You With Just Let me Know!!. I enjoy collaborating with other students in order to make a positive change in school as well as in the community. This year my co chairs and I will make sure you will remember our banquet forever! HSSA Rocks!" Kyrsten Gammon Event Planning Co-Chair Hello! I am Kyrsten; I m a junior this year at CSUF. I am a Human Services major with an emphasis in mental health and substance abuse. It is my dream to start a non-profit one day, so I am excited to gain the experience and knowledge HSSA has to share! Music is my life, and I hope to share the gift of music, as well as help use it as a remedy for those who struggle. I am a firm believer in the idea that it s not the struggle that shapes you, but what you do with it. I am very open and always ready to listen, so I hope anyone who has questions or comments will feel comfortable sharing. I m looking forward to this year!
10 HSSA Executive Board Sophia Le Event Planning Co-Chair I am a proud, motivated, passionate and determined single parent of a beautiful three year old girl. My goal in life is to be the first in my family to graduate college with a Bachelor s Degree in Human Services and continue my education in the Master s in Nursing and pursue the career as a Registered Nurse, and help others by applying my education and life experience. My passion is to become a nurse and obtain a B.S. in Human Services and continue in graduate school for Master s in Nursing. I intend to help others once I have to finished college. I want to prove to myself that I can accomplish anything as long as I put my all into it. I know that it will take a lot of work, time, patience, and determination to reach this goal. I am motivated and have many goals that will lead me to a life as a nurse. I enjoy working with others by making a difference in their lives. I would like to make long lasting impression on others and be of service to myself, my peers, to the faculty and to the community. I love meeting new people and learning new things because I can share my wisdom with people that I have not met yet. Being a Human Services major is the sparkle in my eye that never ceases to amaze. Being appointed as Event Planner Co-Chair of HSSA is pleasure to be at service. I hope to utilized my skills and resources and develop a relationship with the community as well.
