With all of your new years resolutions be sure include a healthy dose of nursing leadership. 2 Events and Opportunities Nurses Day at the Capital Feb 24th The day will begin at the Cowboy Hall of Fame with a presentation from the Oklahoma Nurses Association and will move to the Capital building for a state congress session. Come and represent your profession!!! Register at: Early Bird Rates through 2/15/15 Business professional attire required. Official ONSA Graduation cords for $15. Get Involved Official HOD Delegate After completing an application to become an official HOD delegate to represent your SNA chapter, you are eligible to vote in the monthly ONSA board meetings. As an official delegate you can vote in the House of Delegate meeting at convention to approve changes to our organizational bylaws and to elect the next ONSA Board of Directors. Write an article for Pulse Point See something exciting on your campus? Take a quick snap shot and send me a short story to publish in the next newsletter. 3 Highlights from Convention Convention was filled with exciting learning and leadership opportunities. This year the convention featured several new break out sessions and popular classics with topics ranging from ARDS and OB to human trafficking and combat nursing. Nursing students leaning how to use the Rotoprone bed Dr. Dean L. Prentice, DHA, MA, BSN, RN Putting the Pieces Together This year s theme for convention was Putting the Pieces Together. For our opening ceremony, Dr. Dean L. Prentice addressed the value of professionalism in nursing, admonishing up coming nurses to be the difference for our profession. This theme was carried on through numerous breakout sessions and culminated in our closing ceremony where we revealed the newly elected Board of Directors and revealed the winners of the School Awards (See A4). 4 Leadership This year s leadership award was awarded to Terra Corley. As a student at OCCC, Terra has been involved in in SNA at both the state and local level. Oklahoma Community College Receiving Community Projects Award Oklahoma City Community College Sweeps School Awards Oklahoma City Community College swept the board of the ONSA school awards this year at convention. Community Projects Award This year s community projects award could not be more well deserved. OCCC went above and beyond to truly impact their community for a worthy and heart warming cause. OCCC students single handedly coordinated a walk benefiting children with muscular dystrophy. They were able to raise a total of $5,000 for their cause. Terra Corley Receiving Leadership Award Membership Award OCCC was able to increase their SNA membership by a significant percentage earning them the membership award. Oklahoma Community College Receiving Membership Award 4

5 ONSA Board of Directors Hello I am Terra Corley and I am the President. I am looking forward to this year. We have a lot planned! I graduated from Oklahoma City Community College Fall 2014 and now I am a Registered Nurse at OU Medical Center in ICU-West. Being on the board last year as Co-Public Relations Director and this year as President has made me confident as a professional in nursing. I encourage students who are active in their local NSA Chapter to run for ONSA Board of Directors in October at our Annual Convention. President Terra Corley RN, ADN Hello! I am honored to serve as your ONSA First Vice President for the year. I am a senior at University of Oklahoma-Tulsa. I am excited for the opportunity to work with the other members of the ONSA board to create a great experience at convention. Nursing can offer so many different fields and opportunities, I hope to show people that side of nursing. When I am not in school, I enjoy spending time with family and friends. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me! First Vice President Madeline LiSooey Hi everyone! I am Tara Goodman. I am so excited to be serving as your 2nd Vice President for I am currently attending the University of Central Oklahoma. Some of my hobbies include crafting and two-stepping. I work at The Children's Center, and I have a passion for working in pediatrics. I have many ideas for the upcoming convention. I hope to see all of you there! Thank you for allowing me to serve you. 6 Hello! I'm Katherine Chavez ONSA secretary, I am very excited to serve a second year with this organization. I am a registered nurse at OU Medical Center in the Adult Intensive Care Unit. I grew up in Norman Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma City Community College and am currently continuing my education at the University of Oklahoma. I love the energy nursing students bring to convention, see you guys in October! Secretary Katherine Chavez RN, ADN Treasurer Jarrod Hertzler RN, BSN Hello fellow Oklahoma Nursing students, my name is Jarrod Hertzler. I recently graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in December 2014 with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing. I served as the treasurer for my school s local SNA chapter. I am very excited to be a member of the Oklahoma Nursing Student Association board and look forward to the experience of being a state treasurer. I am a veteran of the US Army and I will be working in the trauma ICU at the Oklahoma University Medical Center. I enjoy volunteering at events for the Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corp and the Red Cross. Hello, my name is Mikaela Siemens and I am honored to serve as the Newsletter Editor for ONSA. I am currently a senior at the University of Oklahoma Tulsa. I am so excited to be graduating May 2015 and officially entering the profession of nursing. 7 Legislative Director Katie Banas My name is Katie Banas and I am your ONSA Legislative Director! I am so very honored to be apart of this organization and to serve the nursing students of Oklahoma. I am currently a student at the University of Oklahoma- Tulsa. My heart belongs to Cardiovascular Intensive Care Nursing and plan to make that my career after nursing school. Outside of nursing I am a wife, a reader, and an outdoors person. I love to hike and camp. I aspire to bring awareness to you, the students, about the importance of getting involved with the government and the decisions that affect us all. I hope you all have an excellent and successful semester! My name is Kaylee Zimmer, and I am so excited to serve as your ONSA Breakthrough to Nursing Director for I am blessed to have an amazing husband who has supported me in my dreams of becoming a nurse, and our two wonderful children who provide me with encouragement and inspiration daily. I recently graduated from Oklahoma City Community College with an Associate Degree in Nursing, and plan to attend the University of Oklahoma in fall 2015 to continue my education in the RN-BSN program. I will begin my career as a RN in the nurse residency program in Labor and Delivery at OU Medical Center in March My passion in nursing is to provide evidence-based care for women, newborns, and their families as they journey through the experience of childbirth. My long-term career goal is to obtain a DNP in Nurse Midwifery. I am looking forward to representing our profession and encouraging individuals to embark on this journey to becoming a nurse, and to spread hope to those who may feel discouraged from seeking their dreams due to various life circumstances. 8 Member Ship Director Joseph Hart I am Joseph Hart. I am currently attending the NEO A&M College in Miami, OK in pursuit of my ADN and pre-bsn degrees. I am serving as the membership director for the ON- SA. I am the NEO-NSA president-elect. I am currently a firefighter/paramedic in Vinita, OK. I have am married with 2 children, Josie, 8 year old daughter and Jayce, 3 year old son. I am looking forward to this year. I plan to add new chapters from nursing programs that are not active in ONSA. I also plan to expand current memberships. While doing that, I plan to recruit more participation from dormant chapters. I am currently a senior at the University of Central Oklahoma working on my Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing. I have been a Licensed Practical Nurse since Nursing has been a passion of mine from a very young age. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, shopping, and volunteering with the youth at church. I'm Crystal Yancey, ONSA Presidential Consultant. I have been a registered nurse for 4 years and currently work as in In-House Coordinator at LifeShare of Oklahoma. Previously, I worked in a NeuroTrauma Surgical ICU. I grew up in Broken Arrow and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. Sooner Born and Sooner Bred! This is my 6th year to serve the ONSA Board of Directors and Students. I am passionate about helping others grow into leadership and I am excited about the year ahead! Greetings nursing students of Oklahoma! My name is Brenda Nance and I am serving as the Oklahoma League for Nursing Consultant to ONSA. I earned my BSN from Langston University in Tulsa and my Masters in Nursing Education from the University of Oklahoma. I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Samford University. I am a NLN Certified Nurse Educator and the Director of Non-Traditional Programs at OU College of Nursing in Tulsa. I teach undergraduate students in the Traditional, Accelerated, and Career Mobility Programs. I am passionate about the success and leadership of nursing students and I am excited to serve ONSA in any capacity that I am able. 10 Oklahoma Nurses Association Consultant Dr. Dean L. Prentice, DHA, Hello Oklahoma nursing students! It is a great time to be studying nursing and in the great state of Oklahoma! As your Oklahoma Nurses Association consultant, I am here to represent YOUR future nursing association and to help you as you transition from student nurse to professional nurse. My nursing career is spanning 25 years and the journey has been fantastic. Currently, I am an active duty nurse in the United States Air Force and a graduate of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa. I am standing by to assist you with any questions you have on the profession of nursing, on working as professional nurse, and to help with your leadership development now and into the future! It is a great time to be a nurse in Oklahoma! ONSA Advisor Convention Advisor Stephanie Greenfield BSN, RN Hi there everyone. My name is Stephanie Greenfield and I am your Convention Advisor. I am your former 2nd Vice President and had the pleasure of planning the ON- SA convention that was held this past October (of course with the help from the other board members as well). I graduated May 2014 from Langston University with my BSN and passed NCLEX shortly after. I have been working at Stillwater Medical Center since June 2014 on the Rehab floor and have recently transferred to the Medical/Surgical Floor. I served as the treasurer for Langston s student nursing association my Junior year and I am served as the secretary my Senior year.
