Our biggest event of the year is right around the corner - the Georgia Association of Nursing Students (GANS) Annual Convention. This year, it will be held at AmericasMart in downtown Atlanta October 17th-19th. The SNA is looking forward to having a great presence from KSU at the convention and are working hard to ensure that as much of the cost as possible is covered for those who wish to attend. If you've never been to a convention before, you're really missing out. Nearly a thousand nursing students come together from across the state. They participate in various events and opportunities including focus sessions which cover everything from Fluids and Electrolytes Made Easy to Interviewing Skills for your future job applications. Also, attendees participate in the House of Delegates where schools bring forth matters that they would like to see other students and nursing schools focus on. At the Exhibit Hall, representatives from nursing schools, hospitals, and other sponsors will be available to speak with attendees one-on-one. The days of convention are packed full of opportunities for growth as a student, professional, and leader - and the nights are packed with fun. There will be a mini-dance marathon to support the Children's Miracle Network, an NCLEX Trivia Bowl, and a formal awards banquet. 2 Networking Opportunities Fall 2013 Career Fair! The KSU Fall 2013 Career Fair will be held on Thursday, October 10th from 12-4 pm in the Convocation Center. Professional Dress and photo ID are required to attend this event: and be sure to bring plenty of copies of your resume! The School of Nursing is pleased to combine efforts with the general Career Fair to offer nursing students a wider variety of opportunities for employment. 4 SNA Updates The KSU Student Nurses Association recently gained a new Faculty Advisor Dr. Barbara Blake. We're very happy to have Dr. Blake guide us through our student nursing adventure. This week I took the time to get to know her a little better How long have you been teaching at KSU, and what do you teach? This is my 11th year at KSU. I teach Community Health Nursing in the undergraduate program and research in the Nurse Practitioner Program. How long have you been a nurse, and what is your specialty? I have been a registered nurse for over 30 year and the majority of time I have worked in community settings, such as the health department and schools. My area of research is HIV and aging. Tell us a little bit more about yourself. I have been married to my best friend, Paul for 39 years. I have two wonderful sons and daughter-in-laws. Brian and Tiffany live in Korea and Brett and Kris live in Virginia. This July I became a grandmother to a beautiful baby girl named, Olive. That is awesome! Well, we're very grateful to have you working with us in the Student Nurses Association. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to help us out. I am excited about having the opportunity to work with the SNA and will be glad to help in any way I can. Please feel free to stop by or call me. 5 SNA Updates PRACTICE NCLEX QUESTION! A client arrives in the emergency room complaining of chest pain that began 4 hours ago. A troponin T blood specimen is obtained, and the results indicate a level of 0.6 ng/ml. The nurse determines that this result indicates A. A normal value B. A low value that indicates possible gastritis C. A level that indicates a myocardial infarction D. A level that indicates the presence of possible angina Answer on bottom of this page! One of the most challenging aspects of nursing school is not knowing what to expect in class, on exams, or even on the first day of clinical. No matter what the circumstance is, the "unknown" can create a high level of anxiety. The good news is that as nursing students at Wellstar School of Nursing we have amazing instructors and faculty that are here to guide us when we feel lost. This is something that after we graduate and begin to practice we may not see---a support group. So I encourage each one of you to start each day with a positive attitude and disregard the negative. Now is that time to reflect on what you believe in and go forward with it. Be mindful of those who surround you who may not have the same confidence as you might. Work on your problemsolving skills. Be proactive. Be professional. Encourage each other. We all have different personalities and backgrounds. Above all, remember that our faculty is here to help us! We are in this together and no one is more than anyone...if so, you would not be where you are today---in NURSING SCHOOL.
