FROM THE DONS DESK Hello to all newcomers to Jindalee Aged Care Facility! We welcome you and hope your time with us is enjoyable. Please feel free to meet with us at any time should you have any queries or concerns. Cheryl, Kay and I are available as our Clinical Nurse Consultants Rosemary and Chris. One of us is here 7 days a week. Cheryl and I are now working weekends. I work Saturdays and Cheryl works Sundays. We will attend to the rosters and offer support to residents, relatives and visitors. Peggy and Sue are now overseeing Hoya and Frangipani units. There is also a suggestion box in the front foyer if you would prefer your thoughts to be put in writing. Cheryl Hart (Director of Nursing), Kay Murray (Duty Director of Nursing) & Jo Costuna (Director of Nursing) Congratulations to the birth of a new grandson for Jo Costuna. Her daughter Alanna and husband Dean had a little boy named Rene. All are doing wonderfully well. Rosemary Vagi has returned from her European venture. She looks well rested and tells us they had a wonderful time! Welcome back! Frangipani is settling down now after a huge admission process! Thank you to all the staff that worked so hard during this time. It was appreciated so much. Also we have a new chef Jean Jacques who with Francois have been adding some special touches to the meals in the extra service areas Page 2
Welcome to our new Music Therapist, Jim Latter who has come on board. Now we have 2 qualified Music Therapists that offer sessions across the facility. Richard will chat more about this in the Health and Leisure section. Donna our Beautician has increased her availability to both Thursday and Friday of each week. Her therapies are wonderful. If you haven t had a relaxation session with her, please get a brochure from reception and consider a booking! The Lunch Restaurant outing was great! Thank you to the staff that attended and make sure that this happens. I have had a few people come to see me and say how good they are. Last week s venue was really popular! Over 20 people participated and enjoyed a variety of Italian cuisine at Figaro in Kingston. Until next Jindajabber, Take care, Jo, Cheryl and Kay Page 3
HEALTH & LEISURE REPORT Health & Leisure Team Hi everybody. Can you believe that spring is just around the corner? With spring on its way we will be planning a lot more outside activities. We have a few trips booked to Floriade, where we have special permission to drive a mini bus though the grounds. This facilitates a relaxing bus trip without having to walk anywhere or push through the crowds. Adrian,Kate, John, Richard, Leanne & Michael (Left to Right) We also have our 6 monthly trip down to Batemans Bay, on the 15 th October. This is one of our biggest events where we hire a 50 seat coach. We have fish and chips at the famous Innes Boatshed Restaurant and then have a scenic drive before heading home. We also encourage relatives to come along. The price is only $13 which covers the fish and chips and the bus trip. If you interested in accompanying your relative, please talk with Richard Cummins who can take your name and answer any enquiries. Until next time, Kind Regards Richard, Kate, Leanne, John, Michael & Adrian MONTHS IN REVIEW Skittles & Bowls We like to keep residents active. So we have skittles and carpets bowls on a monthly basics. We have been getting big groups for both events and the residents have been enjoying it. Some residents do not want to join in but enjoy watching the event. Page 4
French Afternoon To celebrate Bastille Day which is Frances National Day; we had a French afternoon showing many slides of famous buildings in Paris. Our new French chef Jean-Jacques demonstrated and cooked crepes for the residents. These were eaten with jam and cream. The residents enjoyed watching the cooking and getting to eat the final product. Jean- Jacques even gave John Harkins a cooking lesson. John was not too bad for his first attempt. Page 5
Musical Groups We had a large range of music groups come and perform over the last 2 months. A new performer Greg Dominick, has performed all over Australia and all the world, including China, USA & Europe. He plays many different music instruments like the Didgeridoo, flute, guitar and Spanish guitar. He even played a song with the guitar behind his back! We had our old favourites the Woden Senior Singers. We also had a group of 5 students from ANU come and perform some classical pieces for happy hour. They played the violin, flute and piano. The music was beautiful & professional. The residents enjoyed the concert. We hope they will come back in the near future! Page 6
High Tea Every 2-3 months we have a High Tea afternoon. We had the room beautifully decorated. There was some lovely teas sets provided to make the afternoon really special. We had lots of yummy food for the residents to try. It s always a popular event with many residents attending. Page 7
Music Therapy We have a new Music Therapist Jim, who is performing on Tuesday mornings. Previously he was a drummer in the Duntroon Military Band and has travelled all around Australia. He has worked at many different nursing homes performing music therapy over the last 10 years. He is very talented musician and the residents are enjoying his music. We also have booked him for some of our happy hours sessions. Australian Rugby Choir & Midday Every year the Australian Rugby Choir performs a special concert for aged care residents. The venue for the last concert was at the Southern Cross Club. The residents really enjoyed the event. They performed a lot of different songs from all over the world, including some old favourite like Jamaica Farewell & Danny Boy. Every couple of months we go to The Canberra Theatre for Midday where the Duntroon Military Band perform. It s a gold coin donation which goes towards many different charities. The music they performed this time was military ballets, also songs from Wizard of Oz s including new songs from Wicked. They also did some songs for the 100 anniversary of the start of WW1. Page 8

PRAISE AND COMPLAINTS BY RESIDENTS OR THEIR RELATIVES At Jindalee Aged Care Residence, we aim to provide the highest quality of care to our residents. To assist us to continually improve our service, we welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement for residents and their relatives. Suggestions are considered by the staff at the Resident s Care Committee Meeting where they are discussed. We investigate all complaints and aim to resolve issues quickly and effectively. Praise and concerns can be informal or formal, and anonymous if that is your desire. Most issues can be dealt with informally. If you have an issue please ask to speak to the person in charge of the wing. The issue may easily be dealt with in a simple conversation. Jindalee has a Praise and Complaint Form that is available, providing a more formal method of offering praise or concern. There is an option of remaining anonymous however it is difficult to give feedback if we do not know who is raising the concern. Once a Praise and Complaint Form has been completed, it can be handed to the nurse, placed in the suggestion box in the foyer or posted to Jindalee. The Directors of Nursing (DON s) or their delegates review all the forms, investigates the cause of the concern, with a focus on whether Jindalee s Policy and Procedures are contributing factors and takes appropriate action to rectify any issues. Feedback is then available to the complainant (if not anonymous). All completed forms are kept in a folder in the Educator s Office. External support groups can also offer assistance The Department of Social Services Complaints Resolution: [email protected] Page 17
