2 A Message from the Headmaster Dear applicant I am delighted to advise you that in January 2013, St Peter s College has arranged a truly extraordinary personal and professional development opportunity in Wellbeing and Positive Psychology. Places in this program are strictly limited. You are encouraged to book as soon as possible. From Sunday 20 January Thursday 24 January 2013, acknowledged world leaders in the applications of Positive Psychology from The University of Pennsylvania (the Penn Team) will be in residence at Saints. The team has been specifically created to come to Saints and train participants in an evidence-based approach to wellbeing. It is important to understand that a primary focus for the course is your wellbeing. The Penn team will deliver a specifically tailored executive training program that will explore Positive Psychology, positive organisational and management scholarship, resilience and wellbeing. Over five days there will be more than thirty two contact hours of instruction. The Penn team training will be a mix of lectures, workshops and applied learning, based on the principles of adult learning and the latest wellbeing theory of Professor Seligman. Your successful completion of the course will be recognised with a certificate of participation signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania. Places in this course are limited to 50 external applicants. This course will be best suited to decision makers and managers who lead change across organisations. What You Will Learn The Penn Positive Psychology Training Conference 2013 is a highly-interactive program that focuses on wellbeing for all. You will develop the social and emotional skills which with practice can help you, your team and our boys to flourish. This conference explores the following questions: What is wellbeing? What is Positive Psychology? How can we build more resilience? What can we do to deepen our strengths? What skills should we teach to help equip our teams? These are just some of the topics that will be explored as part of the Penn Positive Education Training Conference in Program Overview The University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Training Conference 2013 is a carefully designed conference that will explore the latest science in the area of wellbeing. Those selected to attend will be given substantial training materials crafted by some of the world s leading experts in the area. Training Times On the first day, Sunday 20 January 2012, Registrations will commence at 8am in Memorial Hall. Each day thereafter will start promptly at 9am and finish at approximately 4pm. You will be asked to arrive at your session at least 10 minutes before the starting time. 6 The University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Training Conference 2013 Accommodation and Conference Transport You will need to make your own accommodation and travel arrangements. Accommodation suggestions include the Sebel Playford Hotel or the Intercontinental Hotel. Both are located centrally in Adelaide on North Terrace. St Peter s College will organise a shuttle service each day of the conference to and from a central location in the city. Seats must be reserved. Please contact Fiona Gallan FGallan@stpeters.sa.edu.au if you would like a bus transfer and have not yet selected this in your registration. St Peter s College is not responsible for non-refundable travel arrangements or other planning expenses incurred. We recommend that you not make accommodation and travel arrangements until you are admitted to the program. The Intercontinental Hotel is offering the following room rates: King Superior room $205 per night King River view room $230 per night King Club InterContinental City room $285 per night Twin Superior room $205 per night This rate does not include breakfast, but this can be provided by the Hotel for $20. When making your reservation, indicate you want breakfast in the comment section. To book the Intercontinental: The Sebel Playford Hotel is offering the following rates: Playford Guestrooms (1 x King Bed / 2 x Queen Beds) AUD $ room only per night (If third adult is in a room, extra $50 per night rate is applicable. If required, a roll away bed is an additional $35.00) (Quoted rate applies for bookings up until Wednesday 5 December 2012). Breakfast served in the Playford Restaurant is $29.00 per guest for continental or $34.00 per guest full buffet (2013 pricing). All accommodation guests are offered full use of the 24hr health club, boutique teas and coffees in all rooms, the opportunity to enjoy morning juice or espresso coffee in the Playford Lounge Bar and complimentary local newspaper. Guest self-parking is available in The Playford Car Park at $18.00 per night (24 hours, unlimited exits) or alternatively Valet Parking is available at a charge of $30.00 per night (24 hours, unlimited exits) based on 2012 pricing. If you have any special dietary requirements please indicate this on the registration form. There will be also two functions during the training: Welcome Reception and Farewell Reception. The Positive Psychology Center is located at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Martin Seligman is the Director of the Center and Zellerbach Family Professor of Psychology. The Center promotes research, training, education, and the dissemination of Positive Psychology. The Rationale of the Positive Psychology Center During its first century, psychology justifiably focused most of its attention on human suffering. Marked progress has been made in understanding and treating numerous psychological disorders - depression, anxiety, and phobias, to name a few. While alleviating suffering, however, psychology has neglected what makes life most worth living. Positive Psychology is founded on the belief that people want more than an end to suffering. We have the opportunity to create a science and a profession that not only heals psychological damage but also builds strengths to enable people to achieve the best things in life. The Goals of the Positive Psychology Center Some of the goals of Positive Psychology are to build a science that supports: Families and schools that allow children to flourish Workplaces that foster satisfaction and high productivity Communities that encourage civic engagement The teaching of Positive Psychology Dissemination of Positive Psychology in schools, corporations, government, hospitals, and communities.

8 The University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Training Conference 2013 Intellectual Property By attending the University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Training Conference 2013 you will have access to the latest science relating to Positive Psychology. In order to have access to this intellectual property, those selected to attend will be required to complete a Use Agreement from the University of Pennsylvania that outlines your obligations with the intellectual property owned by Penn. Participants who do not sign the Use Agreement will not be able to attend. Cancellation Policy Cancellations must be submitted via fax or Fiona Gallan at FGallan@stpeters.sa.edu.au. Full refunds will be given up to 30 days prior to the start of the program. Due to program demand and pre-program preparations, cancellations received days prior to the start of the program are subject to a fee of 10% of the program tuition. Cancellations received within 13 days prior to the start of the program and no-shows are subject to the full program tuition. Please note: cancellation fees are based upon the date the written request is received. The University of Pennsylvania and St Peter s College reserves the right to change faculty or cancel programs at its discretion. In the unlikely event of program changes, the School is not responsible for non-refundable travel arrangements or other planning expenses incurred.
