1 National Center for Missing & Exploited Children Position Description TITLE: LOCATION: Senior Coordinator, Public Relations Headquarters DATE PREPARED: November 2014 FLSA: DIVISION: DEPARTMENT: Exempt PR & Communications Media Relations TRAVEL REQUIREMENT: Less than 10% HOURS and SCHEDULE: Generally Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (minimum 37.5 hours within five (5) days per week); unless otherwise required or approved by management. On Call some evenings and weekends for media inquiries. REPORTS TO: This position reports to the vice president, PR & Communications. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None RESPONSIBILITY FOR PUBLIC CONTACT: Daily contact requiring courtesy, discretion and sound judgment. LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION: None required GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The senior public relations coordinator works with the communications team, handling media requests, writing stories for the NCMEC website and pitching stories to the media. This position helps generate greater awareness about the role of the organization surrounding the issues of missing and sexually exploited children. This position involves securing positive media coverage as well as generating other
2 opportunities for NCMEC that will communicate information about key programs, activities and initiatives to specific audiences that are important to the organization. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Enter and maintain media contacts in media database for reporting and media tracking. Support the vice president and executive director, Public Relations & Communications, with administrative matters. Coordinate daily, weekly and monthly project status reports as requested. Prepare content, including narrative and stats, as directed, for the quarterly progress report (QPR). Identify and develop news, human interest and feature story ideas that will help generate greater awareness about NCMEC as well as key programs, activities and initiatives of the organization, and the significance of these activities. Identify key media organizations and build relationships with reporters, producers and editors to develop an understanding about the leadership position of the organization regarding the issues of missing and sexually exploited children, view and routinely utilize NCMEC as a news resource on these issues and understand the newsworthiness of the organization s work. Develop, pitch and place stories with major metropolitan, national and social media that provide an opportunity to convey key messages and information about the organization to targeted audiences. Generate awareness with the media and the public that NCMEC is not a government agency, but is a nonprofit organization that relies on federal funding and charitable contributions. Plan and coordinate interview requests and media appearances. Prepare staff for interviews and appearances, including writing talking points - which include statistics, case details, issue information or other materials. Respond quickly and effectively to media inquiries that are received on a rotating basis, with the understanding that the news media work on very tight deadlines. Manage requests from media by providing information and messaging that are important to the organization. Work with organizations that partner with NCMEC to publicize joint initiatives. Provide writing support for the annual report, publications, the website, social media, external newsletters and/or other projects as needed. Promote and exhibit loyalty to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the cause of protecting children worldwide Promote a professional image
3 Communicate with co-workers, management, law enforcement officials and others in a courteous and professional manner. Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions. Respond promptly when returning telephone calls and replying to correspondence. Be available some evenings and weekends to respond to media inquiries. Perform essential administrative duties for the Communications Department as determined by the executive director and vice president, Public Relations & Communications. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field. At least three (3) years of relevant public relations experience and/or news media experience. Ideal candidate will have experience in both public relations and the news media. Experience developing and implementing strategic public relations and/or communications plans. Experience working with the national news media and successful track record generating effective media coverage. Strong written and verbal skills. Experience with television news and/or video production. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Excellent public relations skills and an understanding of strategic communications. Excellent news judgment and understanding of the way the news media operate. Excellent newswriting skills and knowledge of AP style. Ability to multi-task and work under deadline. Ability to travel if required. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Demonstrated abilities in Word, spreadsheet, database software and social media. Adaptability, flexibility and ability to work as part of a team or in an individual capacity.
