1 The San Mateo County Probation Department is seeking applicants for DEPUTY CHIEF PROBATION OFFICER The Probation Department The mission of the San Mateo County Probation Department is to protect the public by providing quality, costeffective services to reduce the incidence and impact of delinquency and crime, to assist in the resocialization of the offender, and to provide assistance and support to our community. The San Mateo County Probation Department will achieve excellence in community corrections and will focus on effective service to our county. To this end, we will develop interventions that demonstrate a blend of our law enforcement and treatment responsibilities. We will be leaders in our profession exemplifying the highest standards of performance established in the fields of community corrections and organizational development.
2 The is the second highest-ranking executive level in the Probation Department. The Department consists of four divisions: Administration, Court Services, Supervision Services and Institutional Services. Each division is headed by a who reports to the Chief. The San Mateo County Probation Department is seeking a to oversee one of the three divisions. CHIEF PROBATION OFFICER Administration Services Deputy Director Supervision Services Court Services Institution Services Key responsibilities: Provide highly responsible administrative and management assistance to the Chief by planning, organizing, directing and reviewing all functions and activities of one of the major divisions of the Probation Department. Direct, supervise, and guide assigned departmental staff by establishing goals, policies and performance standards, conducting periodic evaluations for the staff members performance, and counseling staff members regarding their performance and career development consistent with the Department mission and expectations. Assist the Chief of Probation with the preparation of the department and division budgets; and oversee a division budget. Consult with and advise the Court, other County staff and the public regarding probation policy issues and participate in the development of standards and programs relating to these policies. Consult and cooperate with other department managers and outside criminal justice personnel on all aspects of probation services; discuss problems, develop alternatives and strategies for dealing with those problems; assist in implementation of solutions, as necessary. Direct and counsel divisional staff in the planning, resource allocation, budgeting and information systems needed to meet the Department s goals and responsibilities.

Qualifications Education: Possession of a Bachelor s Degree from a recognized college or university in a field directly related to human services administration, such as Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Social Welfare, Sociology, Psychology, Business Administration or Public Service Management. Experience: 5 years of full-time increasingly responsible supervisory administrative or managerial experience; two of which should be at the division director level or equivalent classification, which involved the supervision of a major staff support program or program division in an organization associated with the delivery of services in the field of Probation. Other Requirement: All applicants must meet all minimum standards for Peace Officer under Section 1031 of the Government Code. Goals & Challenges Collaborate with the Court and the County in allocating resources to support innovative programs for juvenile and adult offenders while maintaining effective core programs. Working as part of the executive team to assist all Probation programs reach their full potential. Unifying and motivating the professional workforce to function optimally in the face of a changing organization. Managing a division during an era of budget reductions as the demand for services continues to expand.
