1 Director, Center for International Education (Ref Code: DIR-CIE) Summary: Queens seeks a dynamic, innovative professional to lead the implementation of its strategic initiatives in the areas of international and intercultural education and global engagement. Queens is nationally recognized for its historic commitment to providing all traditional undergraduates the opportunity to study abroad as part of their educational experience. The Director, who reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, will administer all study abroad programs, international student support services, and exchange student, visitor, and international faculty programs. For qualified individuals, the position may be offered with a non-tenure track faculty rank and, or, at the assistant provost level. As part of an ongoing deepening and expansion of our global engagement efforts, all international program initiatives and programs have been brought together under the auspices of the new Center for International Education. These programs include: all short term programming from across the campus; expanded semester long options through new exchange and partnership agreements (such as ISEP), and more international internship opportunities. We seek an experienced leader who can work effectively with faculty, administrators, and students to make this new vision of international education at Queens a reality and to continue to improve the quality and breadth of global engagement initiatives at Queens. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include primary oversight of short-term and long-term study abroad programs; exchange programs; international student support services; and other off-campus study programs, and: Leadership Provide vision and leadership for implementing the international education and global engagement initiatives in the Queens 2017 Plan. Provide leadership and facilitation for the development, strengthening, and coordination of globally oriented curricula and programs in the University; Oversee the development and approval process for all international programs; Maintain and strengthen current international and other study-away collaborative agreements and also initiate new partnerships as appropriate, providing guidance for the development of new MOUs; Develop and maintain excellent international service learning opportunities; Serve as liaison with local, state, national, and international organizations for the purposes of promoting the university s international and global engagement strategic initiatives. Provide leadership for external grant and contract applications to promote and support study away and international education and global engagement, in collaboration with the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs. Chair the International Programs Committee and serve on other university committees and external bodies as appropriate; Serve as the university s Chief Protocol Officer for international visitors and representatives of government, professional, and community organizations in activities related to international education and global engagement.

2 Encourage, develop, and oversee special events of an international nature that promote international awareness and global engagement at Queens. Supervise a full-time staff of two, with the potential to grow, as well as work study students. Immigration F-1 Student Program: Serve as Queens Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and as such, educate international students about U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) regulations; monitor their status; handle complex cases; conduct routine immigration processes; complete immigration-related paperwork, including change of status, transfers, reinstatements, practical training, employment, and travel; and keep Queens in compliance with U.S. Department of Homeland Security regulations. Exchange Visitor Program: Serve as the Responsible Office (RO) of Queens University s Exchange Visitor (J) Program and in this capacity perform all the duties specified by the U.S. Department of State, including issuance of Forms DS-2019 to nonimmigrant exchange students, professors, and research scholars and the maintenance of records thereof. Admission of Exchange Students: Process, in conjunction with the Office of Admission, the admission of international students coming to Queens University through bilateral exchange programs, through other programs, and under other special circumstances. H-1B Visas: Facilitate applications for the H-1B visa on behalf of newly hired nonimmigrant faculty and staff. International Study Outbound Students: Coordinate the study abroad programs; develop new programs, in collaboration with appropriate faculty, colleges/schools and departments; counsel students about study abroad opportunities and procedures promote study abroad; recruit and prepare faculty field directors; implement study abroad best practices and policies including appropriate risk management and liability; and seek funding to enable more students to study abroad. Exchange Programs: Facilitate the establishment, administration, and maintenance of bilateral international exchange programs with affiliated institutions and organizations. University Committees: Serve on the President s Council and other University committees as necessary. Collaboration Collaborate with offices, faculty and staff across campus and with the larger Queens community to implement the university s goals in the areas of internationalization and global engagement. Facilitate the recruitment of international students and to enhance the smooth transition of F-1 and J-1 students and to support understanding of immigration regulations and consistency in the application thereof. Assist faculty members and various offices with the planning of study-abroad and other off-campus study programs. Collaborate with Sponsored and Research Programs to seek external funding to support the expansion and strengthening of internal and global engagement programs. Collaborate with the Dean of University Programs on university-wide initiatives including enhancing international internship opportunities and ensuring quality student support services Work closely with faculty, deans, Student Affairs, and the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence (CAFÉ) to facilitate interdisciplinary and cross-departmental collaborations in international education and global engagement.

3 Nonessential Duties include: Other duties as necessary to meet department and University needs. Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required At least 3 years experience with study abroad programs and with immigration programs for foreign students and faculty/staff at the college level. Hands-on experience with SEVIS, and a solid understanding of U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations and requirements as applied to international students. U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residence required. Familiarity with Internal Revenue Service regulations as applied to international students. Ability to work on various committees enhancing the University s Strategic Plan as it relates to international education and global engagement. Administrative and grant writing experience highly desirable. Ability to effectively set challenging goals and objectives for teams and individuals, and to provide meaningful, timely feedback to ensure goals are met. Strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities, including the ability to quickly establish rapport with a wide spectrum of people, both external and internal to the university. Exceptional verbal and written English. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; proven ability to plan and deliver effective presentations to small and large groups. Ability to modify speech when necessary to accommodate students whose first language is not English. Fluency in a second language beside English strongly preferred. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands. Availability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and/or weekends, to meet demands of the position. Computer proficiency, particularly in Microsoft Office and other relevant programs Graduate degree required, with a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree and eligibility for faculty appointment in an academic department strongly preferred. Work Conditions Work is primarily in office environments, involving contact with faculty, staff, students, parents, service providers and vendors. Occasional domestic and international travel. Work has deadlines, interruptions, and may be stressful at times.
