8 What Does It All Mean? Entry Level If you do not have experience, or are not feeling confident about your abilities, then this could be a good place to start. Our ESOL courses are at Entry level and are designed to give you an understanding of the English language in preparation for a higher level course. Level 1 Level 1 courses provide a general introduction to skills tasks and knowledge. They are ideal if you are starting out or are new to the subject area. Level 2 In order to enrol on a Level 2 course you need to have some knowledge or experience of the subject area. Once completed, Level 2 courses are equivalent to 4-5 GCSEs at Grade C or above. Level 3 Level 3 courses such as A-levels and BTEC Extended Diplomas will further develop your knowledge and understanding of your chosen subject area. They generally last two years. Level 4 and above Level 4 and above courses help you gain specialist knowledge and understanding of the subject area. They fall into the category of Higher Education and are equivalent to courses taught at Universities. A-levels A-levels are academic qualifications awarded for successfully completing two years of study. Students are encouraged to take three or four subjects in pathways. Students can further their study by progressing to University. Access to H.E. Diplomas Our Access to H.E. Diploma courses are accredited by the Open College 8 cwc.ac.uk customer.services@cwc.ac.uk

9 Network London. These courses are one year long and designed for adults who have previously missed opportunities to gain academic qualifications - you do not need specific qualifications to get onto a course. You must be 19 years or over at the start of the course and committed to studying intensively. Apprenticeships An Apprenticeship is a job combined with training so you can earn while you learn and pick up recognised qualifications. Training normally takes place in a mixture of your workplace and the College but in some cases, all training is provided in the workplace with tutors visiting you. In order to undertake an Apprenticeship you must already be in suitable employment or have a firm offer of employment within your chosen occupation. BTEC, City & Guilds and IMI Certificates/Diplomas BTEC, City & Guilds and IMI Certificates and Diplomas are courses with a vocational focus recommended for those interested in a particular area of study e.g. Performing Arts or Information Technology. They are continually assessed, coursework based qualifications with very few or no exams. Please note: BTEC Level 3 Extended Diplomas are delivered as two one year programmes: Year 1 - Subsidiary Diplomas Year 2 - Diploma/Extended Diploma Students are expected to satisfactorily complete the Subsidiary programme prior to being considered appropriate for a year 2 qualification. HNCs, HNDs & Foundation Degrees Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) are Higher Education level courses they are University level qualifications designed to give you specialist knowledge in your chosen 9

10 field. Most of our programmes are two year HNDs. The curriculum is planned so that after the first year you could be awarded a HNC. We also offer some stand-alone HNCs, both part-time and full-time. Foundation degrees are equivalent to the first two years of a Degree and combine vocational and academic study. These, as well as our HNC & HNDs, can lead to top-up degrees at a university. NVQs NVQs are vocational awards achieved through assessment and training, usually in the workplace. These are competence based qualifications where people learn practical, work-related tasks to help develop the skills and knowledge to increase their effectiveness. Traineeships Traineeships are pre-apprenticeship pathways for year-olds, seeking to develop skills that will enable you to take your first steps into employment. A Traineeship combines work experience and preemployability training to support you in finding a job or Apprenticeship. 10 cwc.ac.uk customer.services@cwc.ac.uk

16 A-levels A-levels are two year full-time programmes of academic study. We offer A-level courses in pathways - groups of subjects that will work together to improve your prospects for employment and progression to Higher Education. We are one of the only London Colleges to offer our A-level courses in this way. A-levels at City of Westminster College are exclusively for year-olds. These pathways are designed to develop a range of skills and will relate to each other whilst not overlapping - the subject combinations will make sense to future employers and to Universities. Each pathway includes two compulsory subjects of study. Students are then able to choose a third subject in discussion with an admissions tutor that will complement the pathway. Some students are able to study a fourth subject dependent upon GCSE entry grades and the requirements of H.E. study criteria. Please note: A-levels are changing. Over the course of the next three years, the structure of A-level programmes will change from AS/A2 one year programmes to a two year programme of study. All A-levels will eventually focus assessment upon a final examination structure and coursework elements will not exceed 20%. These changes come into effect 2015, 2016 and 2017 depending upon the subject. Teaching teams will advise students of the structure of these courses. 16 For more information on start dates, cost, course types and to apply go to cwc.ac.uk.

70 Higher Education Higher National Certificates (HNC) and Higher National Diplomas (HND) are Higher Education level courses - they are University level qualifications designed to give you specialist knowledge in your chosen field. Most of our programmes are two year HNDs. The curriculum is planned so that after the first year you could be awarded a HNC. We also offer some stand-alone HNCs, both part-time and full-time. Foundation degrees are equivalent to the first two years of a Degree and combine vocational and academic study. These, as well as our Higher Nationals, can lead to top-up degrees at a university. We offer an alternative Higher Education experience to university. With us you will study in smaller groups with highly supportive tutors and more individual attention. Also, our H.E. courses are more affordable than you might think. With nothing to pay upfront, you will only have to pay back your tuition fee loan once you are earning a minimum of 21,000. For example, if you were earning 22,000 per year the repayment on a tuition fee loan might work out at just 7.50 per month. We offer a Progression Pledge to our Level 3 students. If you successfully complete your course with ABB or equivalent grades, we guarantee you the offer of a place on an appropriate Higher Education course with us. This is subject to a satisfactory interview, reference and application. 70 For more information on start dates, cost, course types and to apply go to cwc.ac.uk.

74 Leisure, Health & Public Services Childcare & Early Years Working in the childcare and early years profession can be very rewarding. Career options include working in a playgroup or nursery, or as a childminder or nanny, and if you study for the right qualifications, you could even go on to run your own childcare business! Our courses will enable you to gain the skills and knowledge needed to support babies and young children in the community. You will learn about child development, safeguarding, behaviour management, creativity, music, stories and play and you will even have the opportunity to carry out creative activities to see how it feels to be a child again! You will also gain work experience within the sector by carrying out voluntary work in local nurseries, playgroups or reception classes. Our teaching staff have all worked in a variety of childcare professions, so are able to give you great training and guidance and are committed to helping you achieve. 74 For more information on start dates, cost, course types and to apply go to cwc.ac.uk.
